2011 Linebackers Discussion

I graduated high-school and played with Bobby at Lancaster. We were going nuts when he made that play on the opening kickoff. That set the tone for that season. Defense and special teams along with a good running game.

With that said, I fully expect Grant and Shazier to play all special teams and I beleive that both will make the 2-deep by mid-season. I expect Connor Crowell to red-shirt or play a minimal role on special teams.

There's a chance that Shazier could be our best OLB on the team right now and Grant could be our best MLB on the team right now.

Shazier is an absolute freak of nature and has elite speed. He just needs to put on about 15lbs of muscle which I fully expect him to do. I think
Shazier could play OLB, DE, S, and even WR at OSU if the coaches wanted him to. He's that kind of athlete. His future is at OLB and maybe later in his career he can mold into a Carpenter/N. Williams type.

WIsh I could argue, but don't think I can. I still believe that Sabino will be our best LB, but the frosh LBs will be ballers, and like you said probably in the 2 deep. I heard Whiting was tearing it up, and hope to see him make some noise. But with Bell out for the year, and I read somewhere that Newsome is in the doghouse, the frosh will have ample opportunities to show and prove this year!

Yeah, class of 1966!

I graduated in 2000, Bobby in '02. I didn't mean to post that I graduated with him. Let me put it this way, when I was a Senior and Bobby was a Sophomore, he looked and played like a Sr.

My buddy's dad played RB in the mid 60's, Don Seifert. He played with Rex Kern and then a few years later Rob Carpenter came along. Script - Did you go to school with Don and Rex?

Lancaster had some really good football in the 60's & 70's, did you play?

I read that Fickell wiped the slate clean with everybody including Jonathon Newsome. Also saw that Newsome is now listed as a DE due to his lack of straight line speed. With him moving to DE, Bell being suspended all season, Whiting (who I like) is suspended for the 1st game, and with Ejaun Price departing, that should leave a solid opportunity fir Grant and Shazier to not only get game PT, but also more practice reps.

The incoming three will have their opportunities to play, but I think the bulk of the work will go to Bino and Sweat, with Moeller playing the Star. Then you will also have Whiting and Klein ready to go. It will also be interesting to see if McVey is at full health, as I had huge hopes for him coming in. I think Grant and quite possibly Shazier will get some time, I'm just not sure how much at this point.

When we got Shazier and Grant we got two guys who will be difference makers.

Damn Straight!

I've thought from the day Shazier committed to OSU that he will have a dynamic impact on this program. He's so quick and physical. I think he'll play some OLB this season and if he can put enough weight (245) on by next year, I think Shaz will ultimately replace Nathan Williams at DE in the 2012 season or the following season depending on how his body develops.

I see Shaz having a similar career to Bobby Carpenter's. Come in as a solid OLB, and grow into a hybrid OLB/DE.

I would have bet the house that McVey was going to be a stud here and multi year starter. I hope we can work thru the injury stuff. Go Bucks

If you remember back to the hoot n holler video a couple years ago where they showed quite a bit of LB drills McVey was absolutely blowing dudes up. It's a damn shame he's had the injury problems :(

A couple of years ago? Wasnt' McVey a member of the 2010 class?

In other words, he had some bad breaks with a nasty injury his last year, but its not a "history" of injuries and he still has 4 full years to make an impact at tOSU if that is what's meant to be.

I was thinking it was two years ago, but perhaps it was last year.

Silver Bullets Reloaded: Linebackers

By: Jim, August 24th

Player by player look at the two-deep:

After reviewing the defensive line yesterday, we move next to the linebackers. A position that has always been solid for the Silver Bullets regardless of graduations, replacing two starters from 2010 should not prevent this year's group from being solid to spectacular once again.

The starting group of three has been set with little or no rotation since the first day of practice.

The second team has been a different story. Due to attrition this offseason (Jon Newsome, Dorian Bell) there has been plenty of rotation looking for the new back ups.

Despite the heavy rotation, there is plenty of talent that will be more than capable of backing up the starters.

Here is a player by player look at the two-deep.
