2011 "Jesse Owens" Spring Game (Sat, April 23)

Offense Turns Corner in Convincing Spring Game Win
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? After a rough start to Saturday?s scrimmage the Ohio State offense turned the corner with a convincing 59-27 win over the defense in the ?Jesse Owens? Spring Game at Ohio Stadium.

Playing without senior quarterback Terrelle Pryor, the offense went three-and-out on the first position after Joe Bauserman was sacked by Nathan Williams on 3rd and 14.

It looked like the defense might dominate the day despite missing a number of key players due to injury, but the OSU quarterbacks threw four touchdown passes against a depleted secondary and did not turn the ball over during Ohio State?s final practice of the spring.

?I was pretty pleased with our quarterback play. I don?t think it slowed us down at all,? senior DeVier Posey said.

10 Things We Learned from the Spring ?Game?
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? Saturday?s format for the spring game may not have been the best for fans trying to catch the action from home, but it was a lot more educational than the usual format.

Not only did we get to see the first team offense going against the first team defense, but we got to see a lot of different guys getting opportunities with those units. We got to see all four quarterbacks working with the first team and we got to see a little bit of a rotation that included Jordan Hall, Reid Fragel and Chris Fields.

Let?s take a look at the 10 things we learned from Saturday?s spring game at Ohio Stadium.

All four Ohio State quarterbacks throw touchdowns in Buckeyes' spring scrimmage
Published: Saturday, April 23, 2011
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer

COLUMBUS, Ohio - All four quarterbacks threw touchdown passes in Ohio State's spring scrimmage, while, even more importantly, the offense stayed away from turnovers in a 59-27 victory over the defense in Jim Tressel's scrimmage scoring system.

Here were what the four quarterbacks did while basically evenly dividing the reps during about 90 players over about 90 minutes of action.

* Joe Bauserman: 4 of 11 for 42 yards, with a 16-yard touchdown to Ryan Ross

* Kenny Guiton: 5 of 11 for 42 yards, with a 17-yard touchdown to Verlon Reed

* Taylor Graham: 4 of 9 for 91 yards, with a 69-yard touchdown to T.Y. Williams

* Braxton Miller: 7 of 12 for 73 yards, with a 15-yard touchdown to Corey Brown

Sitting in the stands right behind the defense's bench, it was very obvious that the 4th string defensive backs and linebackers could not hang with the 4th string QB, WRs and RB's.
Lots of 2 deep defensive backs were injured or not active for this game.
I think I counted 9 total --Dionte Allen, C. J. Barnett, Corey Brown, Christian Bryant, Zach Domicone, Donnie Evege, Adam Griffin, Julian Vann, and Jamie Wood.
Fickell seemed okay with walk ons like Vince Petrella and Adam Frazier.
Freshman Jeremy Cash showed big with 6 unassisted tackles and a sack, should be a strong candidate for PT this year.

Agreed Miller looked the best. He was poised and showed some really good flashes.... Not sure this is a good thing he was the best out there....

JT knows all about toning down the offense for a freshman QB. I don't see it at all as a bad thing that Miller looks to be the best of the bunch. Sure, it would've been great if Guiton would've stepped up and looked like the clear answer...but I think it'll all be fine. Worked out pretty well when TP was a frosh...all Miller has to do is get the team through the first 5 games.

" Sure, it would've been great if Guiton would've stepped up and looked like the clear answer" This is what I was getting at.

Ohio State does not win those first 5 games just because they are Ohio State... A Freshman QB vs Miami and MSU does not give me a great deal of confidence, but at this point and from most fans very limited view of the other QB's I am not sure fans would be feeling great with any option we have out there.

Seemed other than Boom and Posey, the rest of the team wasnt doing much against the 1st team D other than get sacked and pressured. Simon was a beast off the edge....nobody could handle him.

The O did their damage against, for the most part, bench guys and walk ons. I thought the D without quite a few possible starters was very impressive in limited action. JT set this one up for the offense to show well. I like what all the running backs can do but wonder if the depth on the oline will be a problem. We are only 7 deep on the oline, if we somehow go injury free there we have a chance to win a lot of football games. A few injuries and this could be a tough year until TP comes back.

The qb position was interesting. Miller is a plug and play guy for TP. Do you leave the offense alone, dumb it down a little and just ride his legs and play making ability until TP comes back?.....I would. Taylor has a nice arm but wasnt checking down well. Kenny was checking down better but has limited arm strength.... but displays great touch. Joe seems to know the offense best but is limited in what he can do too.

After the game I am less worried about the D and more worried about scoring points with the offense. We are just so very young without those 5 we lost. Talent is there will they be able to perform? Go Bucks

One thing I got from that game is that Bauserman is a very average QB at best. He has been in the system long enough to know the plays and how to run the offense, yet he looks like he is lost out there most of the time. There were a couple of pass plays of his that made me shake my head. One was the late throw to Stoney in the first series. He was staring him down and then hesitated on throwing the ball which caused an incomplete pass. Another was when he had plenty of time in the pocket and had Boom in the flat with no one around him, and he never went through his check downs and took a sack.

Taylor has an arm, but he is not very mobile. If the OL is better in the fall and can give him time in the pocket, then I could see him getting some time behind center in the first 5 games. Give this kid time, and I could see him picking apart secondaries. That one throw to TY down the sidelines was a thing of beauty.

Kenny did not impress me at all. He short armed a couple of passes and he tried to force things a couple of times. The kid can move better in than Graham, but his field vision is not there in my IMO.

Braxton looked good for an incoming freshman. He is going to be a special player down the line. The one pass that really impressed me from him was actually an incomplete pass. It was the one early on to Posey that was a bit high (but Posey did get a hand on it), but he threw it on the run, straight and with some zip, and it could have gone for a lot of yards had it been about 6 inches lower. After a couple of years in the system to refine his game, this kid could be absolutely amazing behind center.

If the season were to start now, I would guess that it is between Miller and Graham for the starting spot.
