As for the Offense, I really liked Reed at WR. It seems he's really starting to pick up the position after converting from QB. Frankly, I don't really care who plays receiver as long as they can catch the football. Posey looked very good, but what's beyond him is so inexperienced that it's scary. T.Y. Williams showed well with the big play and I didn't notice any drops from him.
As for the QB, the race is just so close. No one stands out really, but you have to love Miller. I mean the kid is the future and proved today that he's a gamer. He makes plays and looks poised. Unless someone separates themselves in the fall, I don't how you don't give the ball to the kid and go with it. That said, I think Graham is a very good pocket QB and in the right offense could have a great career. But somehow I just don't see it happening here. With a young line, JT is going to need a guy who can escape and also a guy who can run a similar type offense to that of TP. That said I think it's down to Miller or Guiton. And although I love Kenny, I just don't see him beating out Miller. We shall see...
At RB, the talent is awesome. All of those guys could step in and do well. Hall, Berry, Smith, Hyde...I think any could fill in for Boom. Probably just a matter of who works harder and proves he deserves it the most. Based by the amount of carries today, I'd say JT thinks Hall is the man. Berry didn't get much work...not sure why because I'd heard he's showed well in the spring.
TEs looked good. Jake made a sick catch. The frosh had a catch or two. I think the Bucks are more than fine there.
Zach Boren = beast. His block on Halls TD was just sweet. Threw the safety 5 yards backwards and onto his butt.
As for the O-line, not sure what to think here. At times they looked pretty solid. During Miller's long TD drive they were dominant although I think it was the second team defense mostly. It will be interesting to see how this group bonds together and forms a unit up front.
Alright, guess that's it. I'd love to hear from someone who really studied the defense...
Offense Defeats Defense, 59-27, In Spring Game
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State offense defeated the Buckeye defense, 59-27, Saturday in front of 44,276 fans at the 2011 Jesse Owens Spring Game at Ohio Stadium.
The game was an offense vs. defense affair. Points were awarded to the offense in typical fashion, but the Scarlet clad offense could also get a point for each first-and-10 and a point for each play over 20 yards. The defense earned points for, among other things, forcing a punt, recording a fumble, interception, sack or tackle behind the line, and stopping fourth-down plays and two-point conversions.
Senior Joe Bauserman was the first quarterback in the game and he was replaced on subsequent possessions by Taylor Graham, Kenny Guiton and Braxton Miller, respectively. The quarterbacks combined to complete 20 of 43 passes for 249 yards and four touchdowns. Individually...
A balanced rushing attack netted 120 yards against the Gray defense. Jordan Hall rushed for 37 yards, including a five-yard touchdown run to give the offense a 33-17 lead about midway through the scrimmage. Dan "Boom" Herron added 37 yards, Rod Smith 36 yards, and Jaamal Berry 16 yards for the Buckeye offense.
- Bauserman was 4 of 11 for 42 yards, highlighted by a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Ross on the final play of the game;
- Guiton was 5 of 11 for 43 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown pass to freshman Verlon Reed;
- Graham was 4 of 9 for 91 yards, including a lovely 68-yard completion down the right sidelines that hit T.Y. Williams in stride for a touchdown; and
- Miller was 7 of 12 for 73 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown pass to Corey "Philly" Brown.
Defensively, linebackers Andrew Sweat and Jordan Whiting led the way with 10 and seven tackles, respectively. Whiting also had one of four sacks (on Graham) recorded by the defense in the first couple of series, with Nathan Williams (Bauserman), Dominic Clarke (Bauserman) and freshman Joel Hale (Graham) also notching sacks.
Later on, Jeremy Cash, J.T. Moore and Dorian Bell recorded quarterback sacks as the defense would total 11 total tackles for losses on the afternoon.
Drew Basil's 22-yard field goal provided the first offensive points of the game. The sophomore would add a 27-yarder later in the game, finishing a perfect 2-for-2 on the day.
The 2011 version of the spring game honored the legacy of the great Jessie Owens, who 75 years ago this summer won four gold medals at the Berlin Olympics, a medal total that no other Olympic athlete had accomplished. His victories were also triumphs over Adolph Hitler's claims that the German "Aryan" people were the dominant race. Owens proved that individual excellence and personal dedication were what distinguished one human being from another - not race or national origin.
The Ohio State team wore a special 75th anniversary Jesse Owens logo on their custom painted "camo" helmets. The team also wore decals to honor the memory of Jake Nickle and Colleen Dobbins.
As many as 5,000 members of the Ohio National Guard and their families were expected to attend the game today. Some of the proceeds of the game will benefit the National Guard Family Readiness and Warrior Support programs.
