2011 Defensive Line Discussion

We'll have Williams, Thomas, Hankins, Fellows, Simon, Gobel, Bellamy, Moore, and Baldwin returning next year.

We will also be bringing in some elite talent with the likes of Miller, Hayes, Bennett, Hale, as well as Farris.

And finally it looks like we will be getting Keith Wells back in the fold and he looked promising before he left.

There will be a lot of young players, but great depth as well.

Cam is going to be a huge loss. From all accounts of people who've interacted with the team he was the leader of that line. Hard to replace that kind of talent and leadership. I think like you all have said we'll replace the talent by committee. I'm just wondering who will take the reigns in the leadership and dedication aspect. Simon??

Wells could be huge for us as well. I see a 2009-esque rotation of linemen, remains to be seen if they can match that unit's impact on games. If they can it will go a long way towards breaking in some new starters in the defensive backfield, similar to how that 2009 unit helped break in Amos, Chekwa, and Torrence until they became established starters.

I have a feeling we'll be using the 3-4 a lot more this year than we did in 2010. In 2009 we used odd fronts and 3 man fronts a lot more. With Sabino/Moeller on one edge and Nate Williams on the other we could have a three man front of Hankins, Simon, and Wells with Bellamy, Goebel, Thomas, and maybe Fellows if healthy rotating in.

It will be fun to watch which of our young talent steps up and earns playing time between JT Moore, David Durham, Darryl Baldwin, Steve Miller, Kenny Hayes, Michael Bennett, Chase Farris, and Joel Hale.

One thing I saw a bunch this past year and in the Sugar Bowl (a LOT), have Williams be a standup/floating Lineman. He can give so many different looks, he has many different options, and can confuse a line/quarterback quickly and consistently with this look.

Which is a 3-4 look that can change on the fly and not have to change who's on the field. Going to be a big difference on defense all the way around next season. With losing 5 out of the back 7, plus Cam and Dex up front we are going to be green, green, green on D next season. That's not to say there isn't guys in the pipeline ready to step up but that's a lot of good leadership that won't be on the field for the 2011 season.

Seems like Bellamy would be a better fit as a 3-4 DE than Wells. Not only is he bigger but I would argue that he is more proven.

Exactly, and we have the perfect personel to run this. Who would be a back up to Nate as a standup?
