2011 Defensive Line Discussion

Way Too Early Look: 2011 Defensive Line
By TheBuckeyeBattleCry.com

If you are keeping track, that is a whole lot of defensive ends and not so many defensive tackles. The Buckeyes have a few options to deal with this lack of tackles.

One solution may be moving some players to the inside. Darryl Baldwin is a prime candidate for this move, along with one of the incoming offensive lineman (Antonio Underwood, for instance).

Another option is utilizing a 3-4 look on defense a majority of the time. I wouldn't be surprised to see a hybrid system involving three 'down' linemen with the LEO moving around pre snap.

With so many players that can play on the inside or outside, the coaches have plenty of options for who they use as their 'down' players and plenty more options for who to use as the roving LEO.

Breaking Down the Defensive Front
By Brandon Castel

Remember when the sky was falling in Columbus over Jim Heacock?s low recruiting numbers on the defensive line? All it took was a couple strong classes and all of a sudden the Buckeyes have as much depth up front as they have had in years.

They have even more on the way this summer, and another deep crop of high school seniors on tap for 2012. Needless to say, things are good for Heacock despite the fact he will basically have to replace a pair of four-year starters on the defensive line this season.

Key Losses: Cam Heyward (48tkls, 3.5sks), Dexter Larimore (40tkls, 4sks)

moore-mug-osu.jpegView full sizeOSU photoRedshirt freshman J.T. Moore is pushing for playing time on the OSU defensive front.

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- When Ohio State's first-team offense lined up for a red-zone drill on Thursday, the Buckeyes' playmakers barely had a chance. Though senior defensive end Nathan Williams, an All-Big Ten candidate, was out of practice with a shoulder bruise, his absence was barely noted, because the next defensive linemen up were so ready.

On the first two snaps of the scrimmage setup, redshirt freshman J.T. Moore blew up the plays. On the fourth play, true freshman Michael Bennett was in the backfield immediately, flushing quarterback Braxton Miller out of the pocket.

Those were the type of plays that defensive coordinator and defensive line coach Jim Heacock had to love. They were also the type of plays that make his decisions about his linemen more complicated.

Building the D-line

The Buckeyes have a lot of depth on the defensive line, with the coaches using the jersey scrimmage to find their top eight linemen from these options:

Seniors: Nathan Williams, Evan Blankenship, Solomon Thomas*.

Juniors: John Simon, Garrett Goebel.

Sophomores: Johnathan Hankins, Adam Bellamy, Melvin Fellows.

Redshirt freshmen: J.T. Moore, Darryl Baldwin.

Freshmen: Michael Bennett, Joel Hale, Steve Miller, Kenny Hayes, Chase Farris.

* ? Thomas is suspended for the first five games of the season

There is no limit to how good this DLine can be this year if they keep working hard. I dont see anyone coming close to running on us like Wiscy did last year and the emergence of Roby in the secondary has me extremely excited about this football team. Go Bucks!!!

Silver Bullets Reloaded: Defensive Line

Player by player break-down of the two deep...

After learning that I have viewed open practices and the jersey scrimmage, many people ask me what I think about the Buckeyes . Well, being that I write for this website, I thought I would take all of the thoughts that I share with various people and put them down for all of our readers to enjoy as well.

First up is the defensive line (with linebackers and defensive backs to follow later in the week and the offense next week).

General

After losing three defensive backs, two linebackers, and two defensive linemen, including first rounder Cam Heyward from the 2010 squad, the defense looked like it would be a concern heading into 2011.

At the very least, there would be many question marks that needed answers.

Good news, the question marks have been answered and the defense is far from a concern.

Since the very first practice the starting group of silver bullets has been set and they have been good.

As the saying goes, everything starts up front, and the 2011 defense in no exception.

Big Hank with a major noticeable difference in his weight and how he's carrying it. Moves well and looks to be one BAMF come Saturdays. Can't wait to see this kid destroy Lineman, RB's, and QB's for the next few years!

I still would not want that huge mass of man landing on top of me.
I gotta say all the positivity about the Dline and D in general has really gotten me excited for the upcoming season. The amount of fresh bodies rotating is gonna be huge, literally. I can't remember the last time we had this kind of size in multiple players that will be rotating? Bellamy looks huge and fairly lean, not Simon lean, but for a DT well north of 300lbs, he looks right.

I pity the fool.

Beef package - something we're going to absolutely need as well. While I do miss Rolle and his playmaking abilities - it does mean we don't have something of an undersized MIKE to protect. So long as our LB's make plays sideline to sideline, I see a repeat of the 09' defensive performance against Wisky.
