OSU ran much much better than they have been this weekend and placed 6th at the Great Lakes Regional meet. Torri Brink and Nicole Hilton both earned individual bids to National's the second year in a row the Lady Buckeyes have sent two individuals to Nationals.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State women's cross country team finished sixth overall among 33 teams Saturday at the 2011 NCAA Great Lakes Region Championships at the Ottawa Park Golf Course in Toledo, Ohio.

Leading the way for the Buckeyes was junior Tori Brink, who finished the 6K race 19th out of 227 competitors with a time of 21:08.4. Right behind her was freshman Nicole Hilton who finished 20th in 21:09.3. Senior Jordan Jennewine finished 23rd to round out Buckeye runners in the top 25.

Michigan took the top two spots, with senior Danielle Tauro and junior Rebecca Addison taking 1-2. The Wolverines took home the regional title with an overall score of 45.

Rod McCravy Memorial Meet

LEXINGTON, Ky. - No. 14 Ohio State faced many of the nation's best to wrap up the Rod McCravy Memorial Meet at the University of Kentucky Saturday. The Scarlet and Gray racked up 12 top 3 finishes and three gold medals on day two of the competition. Several new PRs were set as were top times in the nation by the Buckeyes in their third meet of the season.

Senior Christina Manning turned in the top performance for the Buckeyes by winning the 60m hurdles in an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 8.04. Manning's time is also the fastest Division I time in the country this season. Manning claimed her second gold of the meet by running the 200m dash in 23.84. Chesna Sykes (24.08) and Aisha Cavin (24.35) finished off a Buckeye sweep of the top 3 in the 200m dash by placing second and third, respectively.

Manning = stud. The rest of the squad performed very well, also, especially Sykes, who also ran a 7.40 60m. The distance ladies had a great day as well, showing the type of improvement I have been hoping to see. My only concerns with the ladies so far this season are that B1G Champ Madison McNary has not competed yet, and that Maggile Mullen sat out this meet, which leads me to believe she might be hurt. Hope both are back in action, as the ladies have a great chance to win another B1G title.

OSU travels to Nebraska this weekend for the Big Ten Championships.

My team predictions are:

1. Ohio State
2. Nebraska
3. Penn State
4. Illinois

Here is a quick event by event rundown:

60M/200M/60HH

This is where OSU wins the meet, as 60+ points in these three events is very likely. Manning has a good chance to win all three. She is a huge favorite in the 60HH, the favorite in the 60, and right in the mix for the win in the 200. Chesna Sykes has been running well, and Madison McNary made her first appearance of the season last weekend, running well in the 60. Add in Linton, Cavin, Perko, and Thomas and this group will score a bunch of points.

400M/600M

McGinnis will score big in one of these events. She's been solid in the 400, but not great this year. She has been very strong in the 500/600. She's always been a big meet performer, so I expect her to be top 2 in one of these events. Cousar will likely score in one or the other, and Dim and Hullum both have a chance to sneak in for some points in the 400.

800

The future of this event looks bright for the Bucks. Brink has been solid all year, posting a 2:09 41. Freshman Katie Betts bounced back from a disappointing senior HS season to run a PR of 2:09 51. Both ladies have a good chance of scoring. Freshman Katie Borchers has also run well. Look for about 5 points from this group.

1Mile/3k/5k

Don't expect a ton of points from this group, but they look much better than last year. Jennewine has run 4:47 and has a chance to score in the mile. Wagner has gone 16:28 in the 5k and should score. She may also contend for points in the 3k. Hilton and Thomas have not run too well indoors. Hopefully they can turn things around outdoors.

Relays

The DMR set a school record earlier this year, but I don't see them scoring a ton of points here. The 4x4 has been a consistent 3:40 and I'm anticipating a finish around 4th.

Long Jump/Triple Jump/High Jump/Pole Vault/Pentathalon

The Bucks have lots of solid performers in the LJ, but no studs. I'd anticipate a couple scoring for a total of maybe 7 points. McKinney is a strong triple jumper and she will contend for the conference title. Galbreith will score in the High Jump, maybe even finishing runner up. PV is a black hole, and no one has competed in a Pent for OSU this year, though Galbreith may do so here.

Shot Put/Weight Throw

OSU is not too strong in the shot, but Weight is an area of strength. Mullen should finish top 2 if she shows up, and Alexis Thomas should score well, also.

Overall, the women will kill it in the 60M/200M/60HH and pick up top 3 finishes from McGinnis, McKinney, and Mullen. Combined with the other points from the 400 or 600/800/5k/LJ/HJ/WT, I think it will be enough to knock of Nebraska at home (the defending BXII champs).

As an aside, the OSU ladies are very close to setting several school records this year. As I said above, the DMR (Brink, Borchers, Betts, Jennewine) set the school records already. Others who are close are Manning with her 7.99 60HH (record is 7.95). Manning also ran 23.44 in the 200 at New Mexico, which converts to 23.51 due to altitude (record is 23.50). In the 600, Shaniqua McGinnis just ran 1:30.97 on a flat 200 track (record is 1:29.34). In the 800, Brink is at 2:09.41 and Betts is at 2:09.51 (records is 2:08.87). Jennewine has run 4:47.76 in the Mile (record is 4:45.11). And in the 5k Meredith Wagner has run 16:28 (record is 16:23). Maggie Mullen is also about 2.5 feet off the Weight record.

I will hopefully get a B1G recap up next week, but in the meantime, here is who will be competing at Nationals the next two days for the Lady Buckeyes:

Christina Manning - 60 Meter Hurdles, 60 Meter Dash
Chesna Sykes - 60 Meter Dash
Maggie Mullen - Weight Throw

Manning is #1 in the country in the 60 Hurdles.

In the OSU women's final event of the night, Christina Manning finished 7th in the prelims of the 60m to qualify for the finals. Time - 7.29.

The OSU women are right in the hunt for another B1G title after Day 2 of the Outdoor B1G Championships.

National leader, school record holder, and indoor National Champion Christina Manning is leading the way, qualifying for the finals of the 100 Hurdles and 100 with the top time, and the finals of the 200 with the 2nd best time. OSU is dominating the sprints, with 4 in the finals of the 100, 3 in the finals of the 200, 2 in the finals of the 400, 2 in the finals of the 100 Hurdles, 1 in the 400 Hurdles final, and first in their prelim of the 4x100.

Distance wise things are going ok, as Jennewine ran a nice 4:26 1500 to make the final and Brink and Hilton both greatly improved in the Steeple, running 10:32 and 10:33, respectively, though they did not score.

In the field events, Alexis Thomas set a new B1G meet record to with the Hammer, while Maggie Mullen took 6th. Mullen came back in the Javelin to take 3rd. Kelcey McKinney and Adenike Pedro took 5th and 8th in the Long Jump.

OSU currently sits in 6th place with 24 points while Wisconsin leads with 52, but OSU will make a strong move today with all these athletes in the finals.

The 4x100 starting things off in a big way by winning in a new Big Ten Championships record of 43.70. Christina Manning won another title in 100m hurdles (12.71), and the women just took the lead by going 1-2-3-5 in the 100m dash, led by Manning's 11.49. They are currently ahead of Nebraska by 3 points after the 800m (they went 1-4 in that event to draw close) with 4 events remaining (400m hurdles, 200m, 50m, 4x400m). The women are sitting in a great position to win if they can finish the meet strong.

EDIT: There are also a few field events remaining.

... And the Ohio State Women's Track & Field team win the Big Ten title! A strong showing in the 200m dash (placing 2-5-6), Cousar with a great run to finish 4th in the 400m hurdles and the 4x400 team finishing 3rd wrapped up the title! Going into the 4x400 OSU was ahead of Nebraska by 1 point... the Bucks finished 3rd in a new meet record time (Illinois officially gets the record since they won) and Nebraska failed to place. Congratulations ladies and Coach Dennis!

The Ohio State women's track & field team opens up competition at the NCAA East Regionals, hosted by the University of North Florida, on Thursday. The University of Texas is hosting the West Regionals also starting on Thursday. The top 48 who declare for individual events and the top 24 relays qualified for each Regional competition. Even though I can't find it ANYWHERE on the NCAA's website, I believe these are the qualifying procedures:

100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles - 6 heats of 8 competitors, the top 3 from each heat plus the next 6 fastest times qualify to the Quarterfinals. The Quarterfinals have 3 heats of 8 competitors, the top 3 from each heat plus the next 3 fastest times advance to the National Semi-Finals at Drake.

1500m - 4 heats of 12 competitors, the top 5 from each heat plus the next 4 fastest times qualify to the Quarterfinals. The Quarterfinals have 2 heats of 12, the top 5 from each heat plus the next 2 fastest times advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals at Drake.

3,000m Steeplechase - 3 sections of 16 competitors, the top 3 from each section plus the next 3 fastest times advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals at Drake.

5,000m - 2 sections of 24 competitors, the top 5 from each section plus the next 2 fastest times advance to the NCAA Finals at Drake.

10,000m - 1 section of 48 competitors with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Finals at Drake.

4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay - 3 heats of 8 teams, the top 2 from each heat plus the next 2 fastest times advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals at Drake.

Discus, Hammer, Shot Put, Javelin, Long Jump, Triple Jump - 4 flights of 12 competitors, top 16 performances advance to the Quarterfinals. The top 12 from the Quarterfinals advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals at Drake.

Pole Vault, High Jump - Each event will have two pits of 24 competitors moving the bar up at the same time. The event continues until only 12 athletes remain and those 12 qualify for the NCAA Finals at Drake.
