2011-2012 Ohio State Men's Cross County and Track & Field

Super Quick Big Ten Preview

Ohio State heads into B1G's sans Robert Gary, but with a very solid team. Much like Indoor, if this team performs they should be in the hunt, but I think Nebraska and Indiana are the favorites, while Minnesota and maybe Wisconsin will be in the mix. Iowa surprised last year, and while they won't win, may also surge into the top 5.

IU is going to crush the Steeple, Butler should score 18 minimum, Bayer will be big in the 1500 and 5k, Poore will also score in the 5k, Hubers is a wild card coming off injury, but is the defending 1500 champ, two huge stud HJ guys, and Olamigoke in the TJ. That is basically all they are going to war with, but all should score big points. Nebraska will be a non-factor in the 400 on up, but has some good short sprinters and hurdlers. But the field events is where they will dominate: LJ, TJ, Disc, Shot, and PV should score big points for the Huskers.

Sprints: Murdaugh has been hurt, but still ran a 45.7 split at Drake two weeks ago, and hopefully he is in better form now. He is the favorite in the 400 but could certainly get tripped up by Geheret or Abda if he's not 100%. Tim Faust has a shot at scoring in the 200 and perhaps the 100 as well. Murdaugh is a stud and Faust is promising, but not a lot else going on in the sprints. IU's Kind Butler is the heavy favorite in the 200 and will battle Illinois' Andrew Riley in the 100.

Hurdles:Bogle is ranked 2nd in the 110s, and hopefully will not have a repeat of indoors. OSU has 4 guys who can score in the 400 hurdles (Blanks, Bogle, Brooks, Norris) but all will have to run well and odds are extremely low that all 4 make the finals. I see two of the making the finals but not placing very high (6-8 range). Blanks has the best shot of running a big race here.

Distance: Leslie is the key here. Cory has put together an absolutely fantastic season so far, winning the Mile by a ton in 4:01 at Jesse Owens, placing 2nd at Mt. Sac in a new Steeple PR of 8:37, and then winning his heat at Stanford in a new 1500 PR of 3:39.00. Cory will go Steeple/1500 at B1G's, a very tough but doable double. Last year he placed 3rd in the Steeple and 5th in the 1500. I expect better this year. The B1G Steeple is ridiculously strong, but Cory can certainly win, though he will be a bit fatigued coming off the 1500 prelims unlike the other competitors. IU's Turner and Poore are the main competition here. The 1500 is also quite strong, but I see that being a Leslie/Bayer battle for the win just like indoors, unless Cory is tired from the Steeple the day before. Dan White ran a nice 1:49.0x 800 and Stanford and will look to make the finals. Adam Green has not been running well Outdoors this year, with a very poor 5k effort at Jesse Owens and then some meh Steeples of 9:06 and 9:00. Adam is an 8:45 Steeple guy who usually turns it on at big meets, so let's hope he does the same here. Roys recently ran a 9:02 Steeple, just 2 seconds off his PR. I don't see him scoring but would like to see a PR effort that gets him into the East Prelims. No one will score in the 5k and OSU has no entrants in the 10k.

Jumps: Long Jump is the strength for OSU, with Smith having a great season so far and Hartfield performing ok. MacDonald was surprise 2nd place last year, but I wouldn't count on that. Triple Jump is weak, as Blevins hasn't done much, but Hartfield will compete for the first time this year. High Jump has been a black hole even with the very solid recruiting class. If Smith or Parrish jump well they may grab a point. Vault could be a big event, but Nickles hasn't really competed much in it Outdoors so not sure if he is hurt. If Marshall vaults well he can score, though he won't repeat as champion.

Throws: DeChant is having a great year, setting an Outdoor Shot PR and a Disc PR. He will be in the running for the Shot title if he throws well, but Disc will be tough to score in. Mays has been solid in the Hammer and should score. Stephens and Nickles are both ok in a weak Javelin conference and can both pick up points.

Decathalon: Nickles, if healthy, will be in the hunt for the win with Cato only doing individual events. Kunze can score as well if he puts a good one together.

Relays: 4x1 looks pretty weak, but hasn't run much at all, and could score a few points. The 4x4 ran very well at Drake, registering a 3:04.01, but got DQd for a lane violation. This team is very good and can go 3:02 if Murdaugh gets healthy. They should battle Penn State for the title.

Solid first day for the Buckeyes. Mays threw his typical 61m throw to take 4th in the Hammer and Nickles went 16'11" in the Vault to take 5th. A bit disappointing for Heath, as the winner was 17'3", but I'm sure dealing with the first day of the Decathlon took a lot out of him. Speaking of the Decathlon, Nickles sits in 8th and Kunze is in 9th after the first day. Heath, who was just 5 points off the school record at the Texas Relays earlier this year, is over 200 points ahead of where he was after day 1 at Texas. Day 2 is his stronger day and I fully expect to see him take at least 4th place. I think with a good day he will be in a close battle with Szmanda and Grzesiak for 2nd. Barrefors probably has 1st locked up minus a disaster. I think Heath will knock off Grzesiak but get nipped by Szmanda. Regardless, 7700 points is in play and Heath will likely lock up a trip to Nationals.

A mostly good Day 2 for OSU. Ohio State sits in 4th with 42 points, 2 back of 2nd place Indiana and 20 behind 1st place Wisconsin. I'll start with the good then move to the bad.

Long Jump: Mike Hartfield is back! After struggling all year Hartfield unleashed a PR 26'1" jump to win the B1G title. Korbin Smith tied his PR with a 25'2" leap to take 3rd, and Steve MacDonald jumped a PR 24'10" to take 6th for 19 total team points. Huge event for OSU. MacDonald should get into the East Prelims with his jump, as well.

3000 Steeple:Another great B1G for Cory Leslie, but like indoors, still no title. Cory placed 2nd in a PR and Meet Record time of 8:32. Sadly, Michigan's Craig Forys also broke the meet record with his winning 8:28. This entire race was insanely good, as 5 guys ran 8:37 or faster and it took at 8:46 to score, which was unfortunate for Adam Green, who ran his best time in an OSU jersey, an 8:47 to take 9th. If Adam can improve a bit more, he may make Nationals.

Decathlon: Heath Nickles took 5th with a big PR and new school record of 7635, while Cory Kunze took 7th with a score of 7226. I believe Nickles score places him 13th in the country, so he should be off to Nationals. Very very strong event up top, as the top 3 all registered scores better than the 3rd best score in the county last year.

100/200/4x100: Tim Faust really showed up, making the finals of both the 100 and 200 with runs of 10.50 and a PR 20.83. Brandon Blackwell also ran great in the 100 with a 10.53, but missed the finals by an agonizing .004 seconds. The 4x1 (Bogle, Faust, Blackwell, Batcha) also ran well, knocking a second off its season best time to run 39.97 to qualify for the finals.

1500: Cory Leslie cruised to an easy win in his heat to make the finals, and Chris Fallon continued to impress with a PR of 3:44.20 to auto qualify for the finals.

110Hurdles: Bogle cruised to the finals, winning his heat in 13.93.

400 Hurdles: Blanks ran a nice PR of 51.28 to make the finals. The field ran very well, however, and Bogle's 51.98 PR was not enough to make the finals.

High Jump:Tyler Parish and Devin Smith did not place, but both jumped much better than have been, each going 6'9". Indiana's multi-time National champion Derek Drouin won the even in a meet record and all time Big Ten record of 7'7".

Discus: Neither Mays nor DeChant threw that great, going 167' and 166', respectively. Not a big deal as both would have had to set significant PRs to score, as the B1G is strong in this event.

800:Dan White ran a disappointing 1:50.46 to miss the finals. Hopefully he bounces back at the East Prelims.

400:Very unusual to see this event so low, as Murdaugh has dominated the B1G over the past 3 years. But sadly, he ran only a 47.70 to miss the finals. His injury must be worse than I thought. Hopefully he can get right by the East Prelims and be at least effective enough to anchor the 4x4 to Nationals. Marvel Brooks ran a very solid 47.42 and missed the finals by 0.01 seconds.

As an aside, from the events that have been completed so far, I think the Big Ten might be the strongest overall conference in the country this year.

The men are sitting in 4th with 4 events on the track and a few field events remaining. They will finish anywhere from 3rd to 7th as only 16 points separate those places... Wisconsin and Indiana are probably out of reach from everyone else. The best performance on the track so far has been Corey Leslie finishing 2nd in the 1500m in 3:42.03. He's run quicker this year but that along with his steeple is a strong double.

Final Team Scores

1) Wisconsin 121
2) Nebraska 115.50
3) Indiana 115

The Ohio State men's track & field team opens up competition at the NCAA East Regionals, hosted by the University of North Florida, on Thursday. The University of Texas is hosting the West Regionals also starting on Thursday. The top 48 who declare for individual events and the top 24 relays qualified for each Regional competition. Even though I can't find it ANYWHERE on the NCAA's website, I believe these are the qualifying procedures:

100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 100m Hurdles, 400m Hurdles - 6 heats of 8 competitors, the top 3 from each heat plus the next 6 fastest times qualify to the Quarterfinals. The Quarterfinals have 3 heats of 8 competitors, the top 3 from each heat plus the next 3 fastest times advance to the National Semi-Finals at Drake.

1500m - 4 heats of 12 competitors, the top 5 from each heat plus the next 4 fastest times qualify to the Quarterfinals. The Quarterfinals have 2 heats of 12, the top 5 from each heat plus the next 2 fastest times advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals at Drake.

3,000m Steeplechase - 3 sections of 16 competitors, the top 3 from each section plus the next 3 fastest times advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals at Drake.

5,000m - 2 sections of 24 competitors, the top 5 from each section plus the next 2 fastest times advance to the NCAA Finals at Drake.

10,000m - 1 section of 48 competitors with the top 12 advancing to the NCAA Finals at Drake.

4x100m Relay, 4x400m Relay - 3 heats of 8 teams, the top 2 from each heat plus the next 2 fastest times advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals at Drake.

Discus, Hammer, Shot Put, Javelin, Long Jump, Triple Jump - 4 flights of 12 competitors, top 16 performances advance to the Quarterfinals. The top 12 from the Quarterfinals advance to the NCAA Semi-Finals at Drake.

Pole Vault, High Jump - Each event will have two pits of 24 competitors moving the bar up at the same time. The event continues until only 12 athletes remain and those 12 qualify for the NCAA Finals at Drake.

Below are the Ohio State men who have declared for the East Regional with their seeding in parentheses:
200m - Timothy Faust (14th)
400m - Thomas Murdaugh (12th)
800m - Dan White (20th)
1,500m - Chris Fallon (19th)
3,000m Steeplechase - Cory Leslie (2nd), Adam Green (10th)
110m Hurdles - Demoye Bogle (13th)
400m Hurdles - Antonio Blanks (7th), Demoye Bogle (30th), Marcus Brooks (44th)
4x100m Relay - 13th
4x400m Relay - 9th
Pole Vault - Cody Marshall (43rd)
Long Jump - Mike Hartfield (4th), Korbin Smith (11th), Stephen MacDonald (21st)
Shot Put - Matt DeChant (6th), Tyler Branch (23rd)
Discus - Matt DeChant (34th)
Hammer - Max Mays (18th), Tom Davis (44th)
Javelin - Kenneth Stephens (40th)

In addition, Heath Nickles qualified for the NCAA Finals in the Decathlon by finishing with one of the top 24 scores in the nation (12th best). The decathlon and heptathlon events only occur at the NCAA Finals.

Any insight into Brannon leaving the state? Breaking a record held by Bob Kennedy (went to IU I think) is amazing, particularily b/c some would say Kennedy is in the top ten American distance runners.

'Penn State-bound Brannon Kidder of Lancaster broke Bob Kennedy’s 24-year-old record by outdueling Jacob Dumford of Westerville North to win the 1,600 (4:09.98). It was Kidder’s third regional title in the event. In the 800, he surged from 11th place to first and held off Spencer Bentley of Pickerington North for the win (1:51.77).'

He didn't break Kennedy's state record, just the Regional record. He has to go under 4:05.13 to be the fastest ever in the State of Ohio at that distance. However, that is one amazing double he pulled off on Friday. I fully expect him to win both titles at state next week and will probably help his 4x400 and 4x800 teams get to the podium.

I have no interesting insight to him leaving the state other than it's disappointing but not totally surprising. The only surprising aspect for me is it seems like almost all of the great athletes from Lancaster go to Ohio State, regardless of sport. The not so surprising aspect is Penn State has snagged a few top-notch mid-distance runners from Ohio in the recent past.

Thanks! I knew it was a regional record but as you italicized 'just' it is still a Bob Kennedy record.

Interesting result above. The one that surprises me is Murdaugh not advancing.

Just to be clear, I didn't mean to imply Kidder breaking Kennedy's regional record is not an accomplishment. Definitely breaking one of his records is worthy of high praise. I think Kidder has a real shot at topping the state record next weekend... if the temperatures cool down a bit.

stkoran alluded to Murdaugh having some sort of injury this outdoor season in his Big Ten preview. My guess is once he saw he couldn't run a low 46 (which is what took to finish in the top 12) it he took it "easy" in the 400 Quarters (his easy at a 48-second 400 would still have placed at the D-3 nationals yesterday) to give his team the best shot possible at getting to Nationals in the 4x400. If that was the plan, and I have no real way of knowing that, it worked out great.

A little more on Murdaugh, from Friday: http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/sports/m-track/recaps/052512aaa.html
400m Quarterfinal
Fighting through injuries that have plagued him throughout the outdoor season, Thomas Murdaugh (48.40) finished 25th overall in the final individual race of his prolific Ohio State career – the senior All-American will run with the 4x400m relay team tomorrow in an attempt to advance to the eighth national championship of his career. George Mason’s David Verburg led the list of qualifiers with a time of 45.08.
