2011-2012 Ohio State Men's Cross County and Track & Field

Day 1 Buckeye Results
Heath Nickles, Decathlon - Sits 20th after Day 1 (3641 pts). His highlight was winning the shot put but he struggled heavily in the long jump and high jump which set him back and puts him out of the running for a top 8 finish.
Mike Hartfield, Long Jump - Finished 11th (7.61m, 24-11.75)
Antonio Blanks, 400m Hurdles Prelims - Finished 3rd in his heat (50.21) but grabbed the last qualifying spot for finals. Great run by Antonio!

Day 2 Buckeyes in Action - All times are EST:
Decathlon, day 2 - Heath Nickles (12:30PM)
110m Hurdles Prelims - Demoye Bogle (7:50PM)
3000m Steeplechase - Cory Leslie and Adam Green (8:25PM). Cory is in Heat 1 and Adam is in Heat 2.
4x100m Relay (9:05PM)

Very exciting run for Blanks - he has really turned it on late in the season (and only a freshman!)

Hartfield for some reason does not seem to jump his best at Nationals, which is too bad, because a typical jump puts in him contention for third.

Hard to classify how Heath did yesterday. PRs in 3/5 events is obviously a great performance, but on the other hand his LJ and HJ were so bad it completely wiped out the improvement. Hopefully he has a strong second day and its something to build on for next year.

Day 2 Buckeye Results
Heath Nickles, Decathlon - Finished 15th overall (7458 points). Great day in the pole vault (17'1") and javelin (185'1") moved him from the bottom to a respectable position. Even if he would have done what he did at Big 10's he would have been around 150 points away from placing.

Demoye Bogle, 110m Hurdles Prelims - Finished 8th in his heat and 21st overall (14.00). Not a good run for him but getting to Nationals as a sophomore is a good building block for next year.

Cory Leslie, 3000m Steeplechase - Finished 4th in his heat (8:41.45) to qualify for the finals on Saturday.

Adam Green, 3000m Steeplechase - Finished 10th in his heat (9:00.46). Unfortunately not a good last collegiate run for Adam.

4x400m Relay - Ran a season best 3:04.99 and finished 3rd in their heat but unfortunately not enough to make finals, finishing 11th overall.

Day 3 Buckeye in Action - All times are EST
400m Hurdles - Antonio Blanks (6:35PM)

Final Day Buckeyes in Action - All times are EST
Shot Put - Matt DeChant (11:00AM)
3000m Steeplechase - Cory Leslie (12:52PM)

The 4x4 ran great, considering Murdaugh's injury, and I am absolutely convinced they would have made the final if he was healthy. Brooks and Blanks both split 45.8 seconds, meaning that Smith and Murdaugh averaged 46.6s, which seems about right because I believe Korbin usually splits in the mid 46 range. A healthy Murdaugh absolutely anchors in sub 45 and the team makes the finals.

The good news is Murdaugh is the only loss next year, and Ohio's fastest ever 300 hurdler Donovan Robertson and sub 47 open 400 man Champ Page join the team next year and should be able to fill in nicely.

Leslie's 4th place prelim finish should have an * next to it, because he completely shut it down at the end of the race when he got passed by the two guys who finished right ahead of him. Cabral will be incredibly tough to beat, but Cory will hopefully be in the running for second place. Cabral's post race comments made it seem like he is very nervous about the race (lead to his form falling apart during the prelims), so the door may be open, if just a tiny bit.

I feel a bit bad for Murdaugh because I totally agree, if he is healthy they are running for the title today. The part I bolded in your post makes me EXTREMELY happy. I watched his 300m Hurdle final and was blown away... under 36 seconds for the first time in Ohio history and the nation's fastest time this year. Here are his 3 races from state on FloTrack, he's in the navy speedsuit with white underneath:
110m Hurdles (13.66)
300m Hurdles (35.96)
4x400m Relay anchor (mid 46 split, brings team from 5th to 3rd)

Ed Beathea named Head Coach

June 21, 2012

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ed Beathea has been named head coach of the Ohio State men's track and field team, T.J. Shelton, associate athletics director for sport administration, announced Thursday. Beathea, who served as associate head coach since 2006 and interim head coach since April, becomes the eighth head coach in program history and will receive a 5-year contract to lead the Buckeyes.

"After a national search, Ed emerged as the search committee's selection to be the next head coach," Shelton said. "I first want to thank Ed for serving as interim coach during the spring. Under his leadership, the team had some outstanding performances at the Big Ten and NCAA championships. Further, Ed articulated a vision committed to the overall development of our student-athletes in the classroom, in competition and in the community. With support from alumni, current team members and a highly-ranked recruiting class, Ed has the intangibles to compete for conference championships and national prominence."

Serving as interim head coach during the spring, Beathea led the Buckeyes to a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten outdoor championships with 86 team points. A total of 21 athletes qualified for the NCAA East Regional Preliminaries with 10 advancing to the NCAA championships. Three Buckeyes - senior Matt DeChant (shot put), junior Cory Leslie (3000-meter steeplechase) and true freshman Antonio Blanks (400-meter hurdles) - were first team All-Americans.
"I am excited and ready to continue to lead this Buckeye team," Beathea said. "I have a great group of guys that are very motivated. I truly appreciate the opportunity Gene Smith, T.J. Shelton and the athletic department are providing me."

In his six years as an assistant in Columbus, Beathea, the 2010 and 2011 Great Lakes Assistant Coach of the Year, was primarily responsible for instructing the Buckeye sprinters and hurdlers, as well as athletes competing in the horizontal jumps. He has mentored Ohio State athletes in his event areas to 10 individual Big Ten titles while also building the Buckeye 4x400-meter relay team into a Midwestern juggernaut that has won seven of the last nine Big Ten titles and qualified for multiple NCAA championship appearances. Beathea also directed all of the team's community outreach efforts, which have been well-received within the athletic department and the greater Columbus area.

Looking through the entries for the Olympic Trials (which started today and go through July 1), there are several current Buckeyes who are participating:

Long Jump - Mike Hartfield
Shot Put - Matt DeChant
1500m - Cory Leslie

Cory Leslie looks like he is the first person out in the steeplechase. Meaning, if someone drops out they can add him to the race.
Antonio Blanks has a provisional mark in the 400m hurdles but he has a very, very slim chance of running this year.

Former Buckeyes I noticed:
110m Hurdles - Joel Brown (local note: Ryan Wilson, graduated from Westerville North)
1500m - Jeff See (Rob Myers has a provisional mark and is highly unlikely to run)
3000m Steeplechase - Brian Olinger
Shot Put - Dan Taylor

Good luck to all present and former Buckeyes!

Very excited about Coach Bethea getting the job. OSU's sprinters, hurdlers, and horizontal jumpers have all been very strong during his tenure, and he is bringing in a very nice recruiting class this year.

Any ideas as to who OSU will bring in to coach CC/distance?

Long Jump prelims just finished up. Mike Hartfield jumped 7.68m (25-2.5), good enough for 12th place... which qualifies him for the finals! The finals are Sunday at 3PM PST. Good luck Mike!

My first thought is Rob Myers, just because of his OSU connections and he is in the twilight of his professional career, but I don't know if he would be an option (either from his perspective or OSU's). Other than that, I have no clue.

In the shot put, former Buckeye Dan Taylor finished 16th (18.40m, 60-4.5) and current Buckeye Matt DeChantt finished 18th (18.13m, 59-9.75).

Side note, unrelated to Buckeyes but since I am posting some Trials updates I'll put it here... Ashton Eaton set a new world record in the decathlon with 9039 points. To put that in perspective, the OSU record is 7635 set by Heath Nickles at the Big Ten Championships this year. Second place was Trey Hardee (8383), third was Gray Horn (7954). Defending Olympic and world champion Brian Clay was disqualified in the 110m Hurdles (the first event of the second day) because he did not clear the final hurdle, thus ending his quest to defend his Olympic title and "the dream" of the US sweeping the decathlon (Horn would have to PR by quite a bit to have a shot at medaling).

Cory Leslie did get into the 3000m steeplechase and will be running at 8:25PM EST tonight.

Correction in my last post, Horn will not be on the Olympic team as he needed to score 8200 points to meet the Olympic standard.
