2010 Winter Olympics tidbits

Any live mike is dangerous. But it's moreso at an outdoor event, as oposed to skaters who are indoors and more likely to expect microphones nearby.

I like Shaun White, and I don't care what language he or his coach used when they just realized he had just won a gold medal. My problem is with a prime time network being stupid enough to not expect having to bleep something if they point a live mike at them in that situation.

I gotcha. Shaun White is fucking nasty, his precision is unreal. That double Mctwist 1260 is one insane looking trick and his first two hits are huge tricks as well. It would be nice if there was someone who could give White a run for his money this year. One guy that beat White this season, Danny Davis, broke his back early in the year. Do you guys think sports like snowboarding should be in the Olympics?

he pulled that trick off without any speed going into that jump. I don't know shit about snowboarding or skateboarding or anything in the X games.....but like jlb said, you could just see a difference between Shaun White and everybody else. In a sport that confusing for an outsider, to be able to physically see the dominance is pretty damn impressive.

Definitely. The Winter Olympics needed more sports a few years ago, and events like the half-pipe and snowboard cross make good TV. Those, along with short-track speed skating have helded make the Winter Games more watchable.

A lot of North Americans will never care for biathlon, cross-country skiing, and ski jumping events. And there's only so much ice skating, hockey, bobsled/luge/skeleton, Alpine skiing, and curling that can be shown in 2 weeks. :tongue2:

For me the most obvious difference was the fact that he had the gold won before even attempting his best stuff on his last run. Clearly White is head, shoulders, and probably torso above everyone else in the biz.

One thing that has helped Shaun White out this year is that Red Bull built him him a private half pipe with a foam pit at the end to practice on. White would probably still have killed it without that halfpipe, but I think it helped him learn that last trick. He can take hits into the foam pit all day long without having to take the risk of crashing into the icy halfpipe. I don't know if Red Bull lets any of the other riders they sponsor use the halfpipe either. Women's halfpipe shouldn't disappoint either. They don't get as much air as the guys, but there should be a good battle between Gretchen Bleiler and Kelly Clark.

Absolutely. Not that danger means something should be an Olympic event, but it's fairly dangerous and requires a lot of talent. I think it's entertaining, too. The danger kind of makes it seem like it's worth more.

Compare it to curling (which I actually like watching, somehow), I can watch curling but I don't really feel much adrenaline when they pull off a sweet.. slide? :p

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1Zoh2JC_XA]YouTube - FIRST LOOK: Shaun White's private pipe - Red Bull Project X[/ame]

The Secret Snowboarding Superpipe - Winter - Gizmodo
The 550-foot long half pipe is located 7 miles from Silverton, which is built around Silverton mountain: a ski resort with the most advanced terrain of any resort in America, with no groomed runs, and only one lift chair. It was constructed out of snow from the surrounding inclines, and get this: To pile up the snow?250,000 cubic yards worth?Red Bull took one of their private helicopters around and dropped about 30 satchels of explosives that weighed 25 pounds each into surrounding inclines, triggering slides that would gather up at the bottom. They hired Frank Welsh, the world's best pipe shaper, to carve out the final shape. Unlike regular resort pipes, which are comprised of man made and natural snow, this pipe's uniform material meant it didn't chunk off as others might.

Next, Red Bull constructed a foam pit from 8,000 pounds of steel and about 7,000 foam blocks that Shaun could flip into when trying new rotational combinations like his his Double McTwist. They hauled up the thing on a truck and then when the truck couldn't get any further, snow cats. At one point the foam threw back some stored energy from his fall and he chipped the bone in his ankle, so it's not like the danger was completely gone. But a lot of it was. Enough that Shaun would learn new tricks never before performed, in a matter of hours. By his reckoning, it compressed his learning curve "by years".

I'm going to try not to rip into an American Olympian out there representing the country, and surely I don't know much about the sport let alone possess the capability to play it (maybe I do)...

but John Shuster sucks.

John Shuster - men's curling = gag artist of the highest order. He could've kicked FGs for Bobby Bowden.

I just watched the live stream of this online. In many ways it was better than watching it on TV. There was no commentary, and you could hear a lot more of the strategic discussions. I know relatively little about curling, but it seems to me that the US team is always trying to find the most complicated way to do things, and that gets them into trouble. That, and when it counts the most, their captain has failed every time to make the simplest shots.

Pointing a live mike at at snowboarders in celebration mode is asking for FCC language violations.

It's NBC's fault, not White and his coach - it wasn't an interview situation, and I'm not sure they knew they were on live mikes.

They just need to go into the several-second delay mode.

Hell, they were lucky a bong wasn't being passed back and forth. You can't expect these guys to be camera-aware and censor themselves every waking minute. It was NBC's fault for feeling the need to stick their fucking camera into a private fucking conversation. It would have been different had the coach walked into a press conference and started dropping f-bombs.

He had the hammer in the 8th end today, up a point, laying shot rock, and could have made a normal draw to take a 3-point lead into the 9th end. He decides to try a double-takeout, a very tough shot that could have scored 4, and he gives up a point. Then in the 10th end, all he had to do was put up a guard to protect the game-winning rock, and he missed by a foot, leaving an opening that allowed the opposition to tie the game.

Then in the 11th end, all he had to do with the hammer was a simple takeout, only avoiding a hit on the nose; so naturally he drills the other team's rock right on the nose, driving it directly into the USA shot rock, where it sticks to score the winning point for the other team.

His inablility to perform shots of lesser difficulty in criticla moments is on its way to legendary status. The term 'Munson' is in danger of leaving the vernacular in favor of 'Shuster'.
