2010 TSUN News offseason (football)

He's a unique tailback because he's on the small side but runs between the tackles and isn't known for his speed.
He's not "on the small side". He's small.

"His ability to make you miss in small spaces," Jackson said about his favorite Smith trait. "I've got guys who can make you miss after you've run 10 yards. He's a (Tim Biakabutuka) guy who, once he starts, doesn't have to be full-speed to make you miss. (Blocking) is what scares me about him because he tried to put 180 pounds on a 240-pound linebacker. He's got to learn different angles and blocking."

Um, he's 5'6, 169 lbs...he's not a "biatchabflooka guy".

The last 5'6 170lb uber elusive running back they were jacking off about all off season.

I've seen it multiple times, but the ending of that UM-MSU 09 game is truly astonishing. They came very close on about 10 different plays to losing 6-20.

Besides the failed conversion on 4th down (when his slot was wide open right over the middle), the drive opened up with an interception (wait no, the MSU DB didn't want it so Hemingway obliged and caught it), there were 2-3 bobbled snaps (two which took a long time to corral), flags keeping Greg Jones' remarkable interception (after the decleater hit on Stonum) from counting, the fumble by Tate on the sideline, the bizarre hail mary on the down before Roundtree's TD.

In OT, UM continues to maintain all of the momentum, driving down to the doorstep with a 3rd & 1 playcall. Easy decision, give it to Minor inside... nope, let's throw up yet another weak pass across the middle.

And after all that, MSU tries their best to fumble away the opening run with a terrible playcall given the wet conditions.

What a game.

He's still not been particularly healthy and hasn't cracked the two deep yet as far as I know. They screwed up not RS'ing him last year. IMO, if he's seeing significant playing time, they're in even more trouble that we thought because that means multiple others are hurt or have failed...also, the much ballyhooed JT Turner isn't exactly wowing anybody. He may just be a late bloomer, but after all the crowing about him as a recruiting "win" over tOSU and the hype that followed him, he's gotta be looked at as a disappointment thus far. Probably doesn't help that rr and his genius staff continue to try to play him at CB when he's clearly a safety...

He is not helping to put himself in the good graces of the staff either...but I am interested in how much of that has to do with them putting him at CB when he is clearly a safety...

I wish they would have redshirted him.

We tried to tell RR that Sam needed a year to get stronger and bulk up..but he didn't listen to us! :wink2:

Given his family circumstances and his injuries at UM...I hope he is finding a second chance to show his talents back in Texas. I know UM fans only care about players that play for Michigan..but have you heard any news on hoppy McG?

Haven't heard much. Right now he is number #1 on the depth chart and should get some nice playing time this year for Rice. I really hope he does well. He is a talented man.

I haven't heard much since Rice's spring game. There are not any highlites on youtube, but it sounds like he was pretty electric

Baliff hopes to use McGuffie in a variety of ways. The Owls will line him up next to the quarterback, behind the quarterback in the pistol and in the slot. "He's electrifying," Baliff said. "The first time he touched the football [during spring practice], he went 50."

In Saturday's spring game, McGuffie showed once again why so many colleges wanted him. He took one shovel pass and darted down the right sideline. When a defender dove for his knees, McGuffie hurdled him, drawing an "Ooooooh" from the sidelines and the stands. Later, McGuffie caught a pass in the flat, took a stutter-step and zipped down the sideline for a 63-yard gain. The 5-foot-11, 195-pounder also made some runs that should raise the same question that has dogged McGuffie since high school. Will his running style get him killed? McGuffie has no qualms about reversing field, and on several occasions Saturday he turned and ran smack into a tackle.

Baliff would love to let McGuffie return kickoffs, but he worries McGuffie will change directions one too many times and get blindsided by a special teams kamikaze with a full head of steam. Still, both Baliff and McGuffie are reluctant to make too many changes, because that style also makes McGuffie a threat to score whenever he touches the ball.
according to that article, he's just mad happy to be back home. Good luck to him. Sorry it didn't work out, but glad to see he's happy.
