2010 tOSU Wide Receiver Discussion

Spring Back: Third Receiver Spot Still Up for Grabs
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS — After losing both Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline following the 2008 season, the Buckeyes came into last spring riddled with inexperience at the wide receiver position.

Dane Sanzenbacher was the veteran of the group but the Ohio State coaches turned to up-and-coming sophomore DeVier Posey to be their No. 1 receiver in 2009. He rewarded them with an 800-yard, 8-touchdown season, and with both Posey and Sanzenbacher back, the Buckeyes had much less uncertainty this spring.

We take a look at the spring that was for the receiver position in our latest “Spring Back” piece.

Key losses: Ray Small (Undrafted), Lamaar Thomas (New Mexico)
Returning lettermen: DeVier Posey, Dane Sanzenbacher, Taurian Washington, Duron Carter, Grant Schwartz
Spring newcomers: None
Help is on the way: Tyrone Williams (Cleveland Shaw), James Louis (Delray Beach, Fla.), Corey Brown (Springfield, Pa.)

I know its still early in his career at OSU, but it seems like James Jackson is turning into another Lamar Thomas, a kid with all the speed and undiscovered talent in the world, but can't get the intangibles of the WR position down(i.e. blocking, route running, etc). I sure hope I'm wrong, and would be fine with getting called out a year or 2 down the line, if this kid blows up. But if 1 or ever 2 of the incoming frosh come in and impress, Jackson might find himself very far down the bench in a hurry. Hope the light comes on sooner rather than later for this kid, or he eventually could be out the door with Thomas.

Since he's only had a redshirt year, and hasn't yet played in a live game, I'd say that 'early' is an accurate description. As in way too early to be speculating about an eventual transfer.

The only "game" I saw him in, he had as many catches as Posey.

It seems strange to say this since it has been such a position of strength at tOSU for a while now but I am a little concerned about our depth at receiver right now. Things should be fine so long as everybody stays healthy, but lose Posey, Sanzo or Washington are there could be trouble. The experience gap between the ones and the twos right now is very big. The talent is there, but it is going to be a little raw for what is supposed to be a year in which the Buckeyes make a serious run at the MNC. The loss of Duron hurts more than it should. I hope somebody is ready to step up, because the need is probably going to be there.

While it's never good to lose anybody, let's look at what can be done. First, the Bucks practiced without Carter throughout the bowl season. They went into a game situation (a big game, for that matter), and did well without him. So, it's not like this situation hasn't been planned for. The door is open for Washington, Fields, or another returnee. Second, there are three freshmen that have the potential to be contributors eventually. If there is one position that is relatively easy to get some reps as a freshman, it is receiver. Third, pure speculation on my part, but if depth becomes an issue, JT's philosophy of recruiting versatile athletes comes into play. There are a bunch of backup DB's who have played receiver at some time in their past. Not a likely scenario, but possible. So, it's disappointing that a potential contributor won't be there, but someone will step up.

I forgot the most likely scenario. Just to irritate all of the message board offensive coordinators, JT decides to scrap the 4 wides and spread, lines up in the I with 2 tight ends and an extra tackle, and runs the power off tackle every damn down.

Don't you have another play?

Yes, and we'll run it as soon as they stop this one.

And what will they do if they wanna go 4 wide? Perhaps use a fleet Tight End? Run the wheel with a tailback out deep down the sidelines. Ok thus I digress.:oh::io:

Other than when OSU had a heisman winner and 5 WRs, I think they've been more effective out of balanced sets than 4 or 5-wide sets.

Devier ................ Jake .......... Dane
...................TP......................
......Brandon........RB or FB .....

If you involve everyone in the passing game depth at WR isn't much of an issue. Guys like Fields/Washington will step up. The true freshman may surprise also. Saine makes a big difference in the passing game. Berry could help here also. Point is we got plenty of play makers for an explosive passing game.
