2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

Here's my thoughts on the recruiting...

AJ Hawk
Troy Smith
James Laurinaitis
Malcolm Jenkins
Santonio Holmes
Brian Robiskie
Anderson Russell
Chimdi Chekwa
Dexter Larimore
Dane Sanzenbacher

What do these guys have in common? They all came in as 3-star or lower prospects and have starred at OSU. The final four can be debated, but going player-by-player; Russell came back to play huge for the Buckeyes at the end of the season, Chekwa (love him or hate him) has played a significant amount so far in his career and is a very solid college corner, The D-Line just seemed to get a BIG boost with getting Larimore back, and Dane is the most consistent WR on the team.

Mike D'Andrea
Alex Boone
Jamario O'Neal
Kyle Mitchem
Rob Rose
Connor Smith
Eugene Clifford

What do these guys have in common? They're all blue chip or very high (rated 6.0 per Rivals) 4-star prospects and haven't lived up to the expectations. Boone and Rose are the only ones to play a significant amount. Boone was unimpressive while Rose could never stay on the field due to grades. One could argue Maurice Clarett, but I'll leave him off the list as, after all, without him OSU probably doesn't win a NC.

The point is clear -- WE'RE FINE! I trust in Tressel to get players that will fit the OSU scheme. I also noticed something else with all the media coverage on Signing Day. From the way it was reported it was like some schools act as if it's like baseball free agency and want to use any pitch they can just to get the kid on the football field. I remember seeing a "How did they end up" article in a preview magazine a few years back that took a look back at the Top 100 2002 class. It was amazing as to how many of them never did a thing in college football and then the number that weren't even drafted. It just seems to me that too many people are banking on these 18 year old kids to be a sure thing. I like how Tressel goes about his recruiting. He surely tries to get the best players, but he also recognizes that ultimately the player should go where it's the best fit athletically and academically. The latter being something I think most coaches don't give too much consideration.

I get a bit weary of people trotting out a list of 4- and 5-star players who failed to pan out and then say, "See? Star ratings don't mean anything! We're fine!" (Not as weary as I get of Chicken Littles who go nutso if we don't land every 5-star recruit in the nation, of course.)

It's all a matter of getting a comparable level of talent to other elite programs, on average over time. And like it or not, though the ratings are far from perfect on a player-by-player basis, when taken in total they say something pretty accurate about the overall talent level of the athletes a school recruits.

If all Buckeye recruiting classes for the next 5 years look like this one, we won't likely be competing for national championships. That's all I'm saying; no reason to jump off buildings, but certainly some cause for concern if things continue along the same line.

03 wasn't a problem because it was so weak. 03 was a problem because it was followed up by another very meager class in 04, distorted by Ted Ginn's individual contribution.

10 comes on the heels of two tremendous classes and appears to be setting up another strong class in 2011, at least in-state.

Great. So then in another 9-12 months, this might be a concern worth raising. Until then, it's pretty premature.

I did a quick check of the NFL Pro Bowl and Super Bowl rosters and in checking, I looked at 46 guys who play in the trenches, along the O and D lines, and added some OLBs who played DE in college. These seem like the positions most of us are lamenting the lack of landing more of the 5* guys for.

I count 16 of these 46 who attended Universities on a par with tOSU, or who claim to be on a par with (re scUM) or who have had enough success either historically, or recently to be able to recruit competitevely with tOSU. These guys attended the likes of Texas, USCum, LSU, scUM south branch, Oklahoma, FSU, Tennecheat, Georgia and I stretched and added Nebraska ,Georgia Tech and Oregon and also went out on a huge limb and called scUM on a par. I didn't check the HS star rating of these guys, so while they may have all been 4 or 5 star types, I doubt it.

I found 17 more of the 46 who attended BCS schools either not quite on a par with tOSU, or not even close to being upper echelon BCS squads. Schools ranged from BC, Wisconsin, Arkansas, UNC, Missouri and Auburn to bottom feeders like Indiana, Syracuse and Louisville, NC State, Illinois and Rutgers. These teams can recruit with tOSU on some regional guys (their region) but usually tOSU could get guys they want from them.

That leaves 13 of the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl trenchers who played for "others." Some of the power houses represented include Boise St and Fresno St, these are by far the high-water schools in this batch to schools like Kent St in the middle to schools that I didn't know existed, or thought they only played BBall, like Bloomsburg (who?) Alabama A&M, Towson and Idaho St, Mt Union and N. Illinois.

I'm not sure what all this means with regards to the ongoing discussion about missing out on some 5 star talent, but I think it needs brought up.

I would have loved if tOSU would have gotten Floyd, Henderson, Moses and James, and they may develop and be future Pro-Bowlers themselves. But there is a reason that so many guys from no-name Colleges are drafted and are successful in the NFL, some are late bloomers, some take time to grow into their bodies, some get in some trouble and have to go somewhere that will have them.

For people to think (some on here and idiotic "journalists" like the dolt from the Sporting News) that since tOSU missed on some studs we'll fall to scUM levels is baseless. JT and Staff have shown a penchant for finding these diamond in the rough types and developing them. JT goes after guys who are versatile and can play many positions, either by learning new techniques, or by adding size and speed. I'll bet that some of our Tweeners will be All Americans and at least a few of the ones we "missed" on will be busts who hardly see the field.

I know that nobody on here has really bashed our class, but just hoped for it to have finished better. I just thought this might help those who have gotten a bit too close to the edge of the cliff, take a deep breath and step back. If it doesn't, maybe you should try the eSpin boards, I have heard that they are a lot easier to navigate.

Looking on the bright side
By Second Seasonon February 4, 2010 11:18 AM

If you are a member of Illini Nation or a fan of Big 10 football, you don't have much to smile about today. In the wake of the national signing day, the Big 10 continues to play catch-up with the SEC and Big 12. If that isn't bad enough, it appears the Pac-10 is taking big strides to move ahead of the Big 10.

No matter how you looked at the recruiting classes for 2010 or came to any one of a dozen conclusions about the results, it was a very bleak day for Ohio State coach Jim Tressel, Illinois coach Ron Zook and the folks at the Big 10 Network. If this was a mid-term election, the Big 10 would be looking for work.

But, hey, there are reasons for optimism. Let's look on the bright side.
Overall, the Big 10 signed the fewest number of impact players that I can remember in my 31 years of evaluating high school talent. For the first time ever, Ohio State failed to sign an impact player. The Buckeyes finished 19th in the national recruiting derby, their lowest finish in memory.

I don't know whether to ding you for posting that trash (just kidding, the vast majority of the stuff you link is great, this exception proves the rule) or shoot myself for clicking on it. I didn't see it was from Lumming until I had hit the link, I only scanned it, but that's still 30 seconds of my life I'll never get back.

That idiot hates on Ohio State like it's his business. He should get back to what he's best at....givng one of the Golic boys a 5 star ranking and/or horrible player evaluations.

I don't just link things I agree with. To me, it's interesting to read other opinions. Even the stupid ones. :tongue2:

Just joshing you (no offense JWins ) really was just mad at myself for clicking the link, and in todays society, I couldn't bear to take personal responsibility for my actions, so I thought I'd blame you.

Scout had our 2003 class 25th... Rivals had it 41st. Sorry about your diminished capacity, Tom.

Oh... I suppose he's got his own opinion and it's less favorable about the Buckeyes. There's a surprise.
