2010 tOSU Recruiting Discussion

What people forget is that last year was a decent sized OL class, and that we don't know how many will be in next years. How can anyone say....at this time....that we don't have enough OL? At the present time we have just as many OL on the roster as we did last season.

225 yards rushing 5 games in a row and a very solid ending to the season says that the OL numbers are just fine.

That's very true, the big boys up front were really coming together at the end of the season. I think a lot of these OL worries will be put to rest if we see the development from the Block O that we've been hoping for, namely from Adams. If they can consistently play to the potential we pegged them for, I think a lot of the worries about OL depth will fall to the back burner.

Agree. We've always have low numbers of Scholly OL's. Bollman likes versatility to make up for the low numbers. Case in point Jim Cordle played C, G RT & LT. Plus, if you miss on an OL you are stuck with the player on the roster for 4-5 years. I look for 2-3 in the 2011 class. If I were an OL prospect I would get to the OSU camp to work out in front of Bollman. He is looking for certain attributes.

the concern over lineman is almost entirely centered around LT in my opinion, thus the anxiety over Henderson today

the other four positions are pretty much set in stone, and as other have pointed out, their collective performance at the end of the year was excellent

find a left tackle and depth is not a concern at all

especially with guys like Hall, Mewhort, and Longo in the wings, all of whom received rave reviews

so are people concerned about line depth, or finding a left tackle?

it's probably the latter

It doesn't help that our last two franchise left tackles haven't panned out, Boone was no better as a senior than he was as a true freshman because of off the field issues, and Adams isn't working out up to this point. We've signed the players, they just haven't come through.

That's pretty much making the "recruit more of them" argument. If you only bring in 2 franchise LT prospects over a period of time you can't afford to miss at all which is just setting the program up for failure because you are going to miss at some point.

Maybe if they had a fall back OL offer or two ready like they seem to be able to do at other positions, an unheralded 3 star would have turned into that missing LT. Who knows?

Also as far as people are saying about the staff being confident about next years OL class, I remember when Coop got himself into a can't miss OL recruiting year banking on Anthony Hall and the Munoz kid. Both stiffed us and the only thing that saved it from being an unmitigated disaster the next 4 years was a couple of lower profile OL recruits in Stepanovich and Olivea. Point is we'll probably be ok between the kids we redshirted last year and what we get next year but why take the chance?

I don't know, I don't follow it as closely as I used to maybe I'm being unrealistic in my "have a fall back offer(s)" idea.

it does seem like the staff took a gamble by putting all their eggs in the signing day basket for offensive linemen this year

maybe they will get burned (if Henderson goes else where I don't know what else you would call it) but maybe they are confident in next years class and were willing to take that risk this year because they are confident in the current depth

it seems like quite a few early offers have gone out to lineman in next years class already, so who knows

or maybe we just get Henderson and it makes us all feel a lot better. :wink2:

I mean what the [censored] right? We're due for one of these to go our way.

no kidding, even without Henderson, Adams and Miller haven't proven to be elite yet, but they aren't exactly chopped liver either

we are a greedy bunch us Ohio State fans, aren't we?

If you're a supporter of bigger OL numbers, that is one possible explanation that I hadn't thought of yet. They've had a year to see how good the young OL are and maybe they feel they have a great head start on future 2-deeps. The idea behind the 15-18 OL supporters is a 50-60%ish success rate.

Boone and Adam's problems have nothing to do with coaching.

I'll go ahead and back that one up 100%.

That being said, between Shugarts and Hall (and possibly Norwell) I think we are set at RT for awhile. We just need a LT to pan out...

Agreed at this point, but I'm moreso talking about the future. When we missed a bunch of DT's in '07, I wasn't worried about the impact in the actual '07-'08 year, I was worried about depth for the next year and beyond, which would really have helped the last couple years and next year. In terms of OL, we are more than fine next year. However, we have Boren, Browning, Smith and Miller gone after next year. Outside perhaps Hall, we have no clue how the others from '09 will pan out. You also have a real possibility a couple juniors leave early, which would leave us spread thin. With or without Henderson, we need high numbers next year and I think most here would have agreed that 3 would be the ticket, previous to Moses and James' decisions. To be quite clear about the OL we do have in Norwell, I still believe only Henderson is a better prospect at tackle nationally and I believe Norwell is the better player right now. He is versatile and can play tackle or guard, but I wouldn't discount him at LT. The dude is a freak athlete and could give Adams and Miller a run, though I doubt he takes it.

scUM took more Ohio guys than we did this year. We're so losing our own state again!!!11
I read somewhere, I believe it was in a Dispatch article a few days ago, that of the eleven Ohio commits they'd received at the time that we hadn't offered any of them. Sort of funny when you think about it.
