High heat and humidity, coupled with the fact that it was Ohio State's first day in full pads, caused perspiration to roll down Joe Bauserman's face yesterday.
But in a figurative sense, Kenny Guiton and Taylor Graham are also making Bauserman sweat.
Coach Jim Tressel has thrown Guiton and Graham into the mix alongside Bauserman as candidates to be quarterback Terrelle Pryor's backup. This is a departure from 2009, when Bauserman was the only real option if something happened to Pryor.
"It's competition," Bauserman said, shrugging. "I have no control over it. I can only do what I do."
Guiton, the last player offered a scholarship in 2009, redshirted last season as a true freshman. He emerged this spring, though, capped by an impressive spring game.
This summer, Graham arrived as a freshman. He's the son of former Ohio State quarterback Kent Graham.
Yesterday, all three backup hopefuls had their moments.
"It's always heated," Bauserman said of the competition. "Some days, (Guiton) is better than me; some days, I'm better than him. Some days, Taylor is better than all of us. It goes around."
It's apparent from watching practice that Guiton has come a long way as a passer from his early days on campus. Although Graham is considered more of a pocket passer, he has shown an ability to escape pressure and roll out.
Bauserman could be excused for feeling concerned. Time is running out for the 24-year-old who originally committed to the 2004 recruiting class but chose to play minor-league baseball for three summers.
If Pryor stays four years and remains healthy, Bauserman will never be the starter. Now, he has increased competition to keep the backup job. Has that motivated him?
"If you get motivated just because you have competition all the sudden, you're in the wrong business," he said. "You should be competing every day; it doesn't matter if you're getting pushed or if you're the No.1 player in the country."
