2010 tOSU Quarterback Discussion

Whereas the Buckeyes always deliver!

Usually true...

But the last time my own expectation were as high as they are this year was 2008. After the Ohio U game, I was crestfallen; knowing that an epic beat-down awaited the following week in L.A.

This year is different though. Very different team and very different team leadership.

Interestingly, some of the people that were dismissive (and rightfully so it turned out) of my optimism in 2008 are (or at least seem to be) as optimistic as I am this year.

I would contend that college football has become a crap shoot.
Who would have thought that Colt McCoy would go down in the first quarter of the BCS? SC goes in the dumper. Bradford gets hurt and OU collapses. Stanford reams Oregon.
Except for an SEC team winning the BCS.
Crap shoot.

Pryor No. 1, but No. 2 Undecided Heading into Camp
By Brandon Castel

CHICAGO - Kenny Guiton had a smile on his face. And why not? The youngster from rural Texas had just thrown the game-winning touchdown in front of more than 65,000 fans at Ohio Stadium to capture the spring game.

It was a moment no one other than Guiton will remember in 10 years, unless of course he goes on to become the starting quarterback at Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are already set with one of those for 2010, as junior Terrelle Pryor was picked by the media as the preseason Offensive Player of the Year in the Big Ten Monday at the kickoff luncheon in Chicago.

What they don?t have is an established backup. Not after Guiton?s impressive spring.

"I think it is a good battle," OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel said of the competition between Guiton and junior Joe Bauserman.

Cont'd ...

OSU notebook: Backup QBs jostle for position
Wednesday, August 11, 2010

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

High heat and humidity, coupled with the fact that it was Ohio State's first day in full pads, caused perspiration to roll down Joe Bauserman's face yesterday.

But in a figurative sense, Kenny Guiton and Taylor Graham are also making Bauserman sweat.

Coach Jim Tressel has thrown Guiton and Graham into the mix alongside Bauserman as candidates to be quarterback Terrelle Pryor's backup. This is a departure from 2009, when Bauserman was the only real option if something happened to Pryor.

"It's competition," Bauserman said, shrugging. "I have no control over it. I can only do what I do."

Guiton, the last player offered a scholarship in 2009, redshirted last season as a true freshman. He emerged this spring, though, capped by an impressive spring game.

This summer, Graham arrived as a freshman. He's the son of former Ohio State quarterback Kent Graham.

Yesterday, all three backup hopefuls had their moments.

"It's always heated," Bauserman said of the competition. "Some days, (Guiton) is better than me; some days, I'm better than him. Some days, Taylor is better than all of us. It goes around."

It's apparent from watching practice that Guiton has come a long way as a passer from his early days on campus. Although Graham is considered more of a pocket passer, he has shown an ability to escape pressure and roll out.

Bauserman could be excused for feeling concerned. Time is running out for the 24-year-old who originally committed to the 2004 recruiting class but chose to play minor-league baseball for three summers.

If Pryor stays four years and remains healthy, Bauserman will never be the starter. Now, he has increased competition to keep the backup job. Has that motivated him?

"If you get motivated just because you have competition all the sudden, you're in the wrong business," he said. "You should be competing every day; it doesn't matter if you're getting pushed or if you're the No.1 player in the country."

There have been a lot of good things said about Graham so far. I know its early, but I'd love to be wrong about talking about him earlier, can't have enough competition at the most important position.

I like Bauserman's attitude. Sounds like he has his head screwed on right.

That's been a mixed bag for the Bucks. Justin Zwick set the standard when Troy was given the nod, never pouted, didn't sulk, was always 'in the game' and supported Troy during the game and in the media. Same can be said for Todd Boeckman when Tressel turned the keys over to Terrell Pryor.

By contrast Stanley Jackson threw a hissy fit every time Joe Germaine was put in the game, the most obvious was his pout during the winning drive of the Rose Bowl game.

you can throw troy smith in with the not reacting positively.

the thing is it can be very difficult, even more so if you are the starter, however the impact that your (as a qb or really any position player) attitude can have on the entire team cannot be overstated, imo.
