2010 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion

While critiquing an undefeated, top ranked team seems nit-picky to me, I do have some mild concerns about the line's ability to run block against stronger defenses.

Hopefully they're just kinda bored going against teams like Indiana and the adrenaline will kick in for a game like the one in Madison. I'd like to see more fire and explosion from this group to be able to consistently run the ball when necessary in closer games against better opponents.

We'll start finding out very soon. Go Bucks!

First and goal at the 2, down 21-0, and we go shotgun 3 plays, gain no yards, and kick a FG. This is what I was talking about.

That's not Ohio State football. We need to be able to line up and pound it in the end zone. Don't know if we can do it because we didn't even try. :ohwell:

Wasn't there a lengthy piece last year regarding the way our OL are coached to take a lateral "power" step before firing into the DL? What I see when I watch the game (and I admit, I'm no expert) is that they're moving laterally and trying to stop defenders who are attacking forward. Not conducive to going forward if you're allowing the defender to build momentum on you.

That might explain the success in pass blocking coupled with "difficulties" (note how tactful I was?) when it comes to opening up holes for the RB's.

I would love to get an answer from one of our insiders or former coaches here who know about Oline schemes...

I agree with you that our Olinemen don't seem to drive ahead at the snap, they seem to take the lateral step and then just catch the defender, as opposed to firing off the ball and knocking guys backwards.

IIRC, we moved well on that drive by running the ball...then once we get inside the five, we fuck around and get cutsie.

The offense as a whole looked good the second half till the last 2 drives when we needed something. Then all the sudden receivers weren't getting open and when they were the ball was thrown low and we dropped quite a few. If we had gotten that field goal or punched the one drive in the end zone or both we might of been able to just squeak out of there with a win.

I'd really like to see OSU scrap the option inside the 5. It is way too easy to string Pryor out wide.

The issue the last two drives was that time was running out and we couldn't afford to run the ball anymore.. Wisconsin knew it and as a result they didn't have to honor the run at all.. If we had gotten the ball back at 21-18 or even 24-18 I have no doubt we would have stayed balanced and probably went down the field and scored.. The Dline and defense is what cost us the game.

IMO, playcalling inside the 10 is not up to par. But other than that Ohio States offensive line has not been good in years. They don't get consistent push, they look sluggish, and at times look lost. Need to get that fixed, DRIVE opponents Dline backwards, and until then Boom and Saine will not get good yards bc of their run style. That's why J Hall and J Berry need more PT with the play of our Oline. They lower their shoulder and deliver the blow. The run game is suffering from the Oline play and it needs fixed.

We are redshirting possibly our best offensive lineman in Marcus Hall. I think Hall could play either guard or either tackle on this team. I have not been impressed with J Boren at all this year. I go back and watch the games and pay close attention to the offensive line. It is very obvious that Boren has trouble pass-blocking. Adams has come a long way but he has about 3 or 4 plays a game whare he just completely whiffs. Shugars has to be leading the team in penalties, and Brewster is not playing with the passion that he did the past couple years. Browning has been our most consistent lineman. I don't want to sound like a broken record but if we are having the same issues year after year, do something about it! There has to be a coaching change. No way we have all 4 and 5 star recruits and they continue to underachieve. Wisconsin dominated a very good D-line last light. They always seem to overachieve with mostly 3 star recruits. Some schools just develop certain positions and the O-line is not getting developed at tOSU. The best one to come out in a long time is Mangold and honestly, he didn't dominate for the Bucks the way he in now. That development came somewhere else.

Agreed but JT uses statistics to make calls on his plays....and when that same thing works against an inferior team he believes it will work against other teams. Creative play calling against top competition seems to be lacking and I believe is the reason we are having trouble against top teams. Seems to me that teams like Boise State actually make up for their lack of talent with great coaching, game plans and play calling.

Wisky exposed us with great physical line play, creative play calling, their play action looked believable(TP`s ball skills are not good) and was called at the perfect time. Our offense is loaded with 4 and 5 star players and getting 94 yards in one half is a little embarrassing. With a depleted defense (Homan,Moeller and Barnett) this offense needed to win a big game....kinda like the Oregon game last year....although our defense was stellar against Oregon also. Go Bucks
