2010 tOSU Defensive Line Discussion

Could be a blessing in disguise. Getting Solomon more looks with the 1's vs the offensive 1's is invaluable experience heading into the season. We're going to really see what kind of depth we have. If Solomon can produce on a daily basis vs our 1's, he can produce vs anyone.

Truthfully, the LB depth is more scary to me than the DLine.

Tell that to Nebraska.
And Alabama, for that matter.

I agree that it's an advantage to be able to rotate a bunch of guys in there who are effective, but i want to see Heyward on the field alot more this year, as well as Simon. Let the other guys rotate more often than those two.

So, Nebraska and Alabama don't rotate their DL?

I heard this on the common man and the torg so take it for what its worth but the radio said yesterday that John simon was repping at DE some with nathan williams down... Thought that seemed strange. Then I remembered how well Hankins is reportedly playing on the inside and I had a minor dream sequence of letting this DLine go big in Goal line situations or just to stop John Clay..

Cam on one end, Larimore and Hankins in the middle, John Simon as the other end. Our Dline would be bigger than a lot of teams OL. Scary for the other team that wants to use a power run game if nothing else.

you could see it for several plays on the Big Ten's coverage of practice, so it is true, and Nathan Williams wasn't down because the practice the BTN was at was the very first one in pads, from left to right the look went:

Simon, Dex, Heyward, Williams

it was just a 3-4 look with Williams as a rush LB/DE on the line, Ohio State has been doing stuff like that for years

The only way that makes sense is if you mean scary for our opponents.

Then you need someone to explain it to you.

No one on the entire LB roster has done anything outside of Homan/Rolle. The Dline at least has some game experience even if it is little. I dont have as much faith in the second/third stringers as most do I guess. Have to prove it on the field first.

Not saying they wont, just saying they havent and I dont have as much confidence in that group as I do the line.

We're about 5-6 deep with competent, game ready linebackers. Remember when Rolle was just a special teams guys and Homan couldn't crack the starting lineup? Right now, that's Storm Klein, Dorian Bell, Andrew Sweat, Jordan Whiting, and anybody else that I forgot. I'm not the least bit worried about LB depth.

I don't have time to add it up, but the backup linebackers in the two deep have significantly more game experience than the backup lineman in the two deep. Thomas and Goebel are the only two backups on the line that have seen minutes in games.

Klein and Sweat make it at least even in that department without even mentioning any of the other backups.

I couldn't find the stat yesterday, but based on my memory of something I heard at the end of last season, Suh was in on something like 85% of their defensive snaps. Factoring in him sitting late in some games where they had a comfortable lead and wanted to just play backups, he didn't come out much at all with the game in doubt.

I'm expecting to see Cam play in a much higher percentage of plays this year - maybe something in the 75-80% ballpark, not counting those in the 4th quarter with a 17+ point lead. Hopefully there a lot of those, lowering his overall number below 70%.

Heyward talked about it in an interview, Tressel had him watch videos of Suh and other stand out defensive lineman and made it a point to mention that they were on the field a lot more than Heyward was and that he needed to improve his conditioning so that he could reach that level

To be honest I love seeing Heyward on the interior rather than at End. His quickness/strength inside make him tough to stop, but on the edge I think he lacks that elite quickness like Gibson/Williams. For sure he is about a GOOD 40 pounds heavier.

Passing downs I'd love to see Thomas-Heyward-Simon-Williams lines up.

Who all was in the main rotation? Until the last quarter or so I only noticed seven.

Starters
  • Thomas
  • Simon
  • Larimore
  • Heyward
Subs
  • Goebel
  • Bellamy
  • Hankins
Did I miss anyone? I was surprised I didn't notice another WDE get more playing time when Thomas was out but I probably just missed it. There were quite a bit of lineups with 4 of those other 6 out there on the field. I guess you can get away with that though when your SDEs and DTs are getting so much push.

Don't forget, Williams will make 8.
