2010 tOSU Defensive Line Discussion

D-line

I'm surprised Bellamy and Goebel didn't see any action(that I can recall). They're 2 big bodies who had gotten significant reps up until the UW game. Could've helped to give the starters a break from being pounded on.

Heacock decided on not using any rotation in the d-line which obviously
hurt us. Goebel and Bellamy at 290+ lbs. would definitey added some beef and punch against the whisky o-line and given our statrters a break. What was he thinking? Defensive coordinator should not be d-line coach! Definitely hurt us.

Pure speculation. We had our best guys in and they got whipped. The second team guys would have done better?

Heacock has been coaching the d-line for 15 years at OSU and his coaching ability speaks for itself. The guy won the Frank Broyles award a couple of years ago handling both duties but after Saturday's game he can't handle both??

Uh, no. My question is would it have helped keep the starters fresh and more effective while also helping out against the run by putting a couple 6'4" 280+ DE's out there? The DL rotation was a huge part of their success last year so it was surprising to me that Heacock didn't use more depth.

My take is that, with all apologies to our backups, that the depth this year isn't as ready for first team snaps as last year's depth was.

It is a big difference rolling in Rose, Wilson, Worthington, and Williams as opposed to Goebel, Bellamy, Thomas, etc.

I don't think the coaches felt that they were ready for it; if they were they would have seen alot more snaps earlier in the season.

How do you know if there ready or not if there not given game reps.
What we had out there was struggling so some roatation might have helped. To develope depth you have to have some faith in there abilities.
Whether or not this was the time could be in question, but what the hell this is Ohio State Football.

Rewatched the game, mostly paying attention to the line play offensively and defensively. While we were on defense, their zone blocking looked like it completely fooled out linemen. They were getting blown off the ball about 70 percent of the time, sometimes all the way into our LBers.

That said, I think we'll be fine. I think this will do nothing but motivate our guys, especially our senior captain Cameron Heyward. I think you'll see a unit playing very ticked off Saturday.

Why they can't all live up to the hype

I was working on the recruiting feature for our Gameday Plus section this week, which is on incoming defensive lineman Michael Bennett, when it struck me how many candidates OSU is going to have to play on the line in 2011.

(PLUG: If you're not checking out our Gameday section each week, you should. It's packed pull of previews, matchups, stats and features. We nearly put more OSU stories into that section each week than we put in our daily sports section.)

Here's a look at who is returning and who is incoming at that position for next season:

Returning starters (2)

DT/DE John Simon
DE Nathan Williams

Key returning reserves (4)

DT Adam Bellamy
DL Garrett Goebel
DL Johnathan Hankins
DL Solomon Thomas

Others returning (4)

DL Darryl Baldwin
DL David Durham
DE Melvin Fellows
DL J.T. Moore

Incoming freshmen (5)

DT Michael Bennett
DE Chase Farris
DT Joel Hale
DE Kenny Hayes
DE Steve Miller

And I didn't even count former Buckeye Keith Wells, who may return to the team.

So what does this mean? It means there are 15 players fighting for time, and probably only 8 or 9 of them will see meaningful minutes.
