Hoot and holler too close to call
By TIM MAY
About three-quarters of the way through the indoor practice Thursday, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel ordered an impromptu ?hoot and holler? session. It matched any offensive player, as chosen by the coach, against a defensive player, the object being for one to shove the other backward while the offensive and defensive factions hooted and hollered.
One of the great matches was between offensive guard Justin Boren, renowned for his drive blocking ability, and up-and-coming defensive lineman John Simon, known for his pugnacity. They went at it twice, with no apparent clearcut winner.
It was the same for the final match, when Tressel sent running back Daniel ?Boom? Herron in against linebacker Brian ?B? Rolle. There was a great collision, but the result?
?I don?t know, the coaches haven?t told us yet,? Herron said after practice.
He, running back Brandon Saine and running backs coach Dick Tressel were the only personnel available for media interviews.
As for the hoot and holler match with Rolle, known for being a hard hitter, Herron took it as a compliment that his name was called.
?It was the last point, it was tied up, coach wanted to have a good fight, so he called me out and he called Brian out,? Herron said. ?They didn?t say who won. They are going to check it out on film and tell us tomorrow.?
He did add, ?It was a pretty good fight, but I think I won.?
