No real surprises there, I guess. I'd love to see M. Hall crack the starting lineup on the o-line--I was really impressed with him as a freshman. :osu:

I was a little surprised there was a slash, rather than a comma seperating Williams/Thomas at WDE. Would love to see Thomas push Nathan. But it is just spring ball of course...

Hoot and holler too close to call

By TIM MAY
About three-quarters of the way through the indoor practice Thursday, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel ordered an impromptu ?hoot and holler? session. It matched any offensive player, as chosen by the coach, against a defensive player, the object being for one to shove the other backward while the offensive and defensive factions hooted and hollered.
One of the great matches was between offensive guard Justin Boren, renowned for his drive blocking ability, and up-and-coming defensive lineman John Simon, known for his pugnacity. They went at it twice, with no apparent clearcut winner.
It was the same for the final match, when Tressel sent running back Daniel ?Boom? Herron in against linebacker Brian ?B? Rolle. There was a great collision, but the result?
?I don?t know, the coaches haven?t told us yet,? Herron said after practice.
He, running back Brandon Saine and running backs coach Dick Tressel were the only personnel available for media interviews.
As for the hoot and holler match with Rolle, known for being a hard hitter, Herron took it as a compliment that his name was called.
?It was the last point, it was tied up, coach wanted to have a good fight, so he called me out and he called Brian out,? Herron said. ?They didn?t say who won. They are going to check it out on film and tell us tomorrow.?
He did add, ?It was a pretty good fight, but I think I won.?
As for some other highlights of the practice:

Thursday Practice Insider: First Look in Pads
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? It was the first time we got a look at the 2010 Buckeyes in full pads Thursday, and as expected there was plenty to see and plenty to report.

The team was outside braving the now seemingly frigid April weather for the first half of practice before taking things inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center for the scrimmage portion of practice.

Here is a look at my observations:

Jack Mewhort got his bell run during Hoot-N-Holler drill by nose tackle Don Matheny and Mr. Ed told me later he looked like he didn?t know whether he was Jack or Jill

A recent Ozone projected depth chart lists Matheny as a 6-0, 310, senior, 2nd-string DT behind Larimore. I assume he's a walk-on, but what's his story? Is this a guy who will see PT this year?

OSU Athletic site doesn't have a bio on him (SR #95), but I found a few tidbits from a search:

* 2005 graduate of Lancaster w/ Jimmy Cordle?
* Went to the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester Massachusettes
* Lettered as a freshman on their football team, the Crusaders, according to an old Lancaster HS Football Team internet report (though Rivals has him listed as DNP in any games for their '06, '07 & '08 seasons.....but a mercurynews.com has him credited with 24 career games for the crusaders: 10, 3, & 11 from '06-'08)
* Then must have transferred / walked-on here in '09

Friday Practice Insider: Knee-Jerk Reaction
By Brandon Castel

COLUMBUS ? Watching Terrelle Pryor hobble off the field after throwing a pass during red zone drills, I could only imagine what was going through the mind of Jim Tressel and his staff. Only two months removed from minor knee surgery, Pryor was stretching out his knee and walking gingerly as he made his way over to former quarterbacks coach Joe Daniels.

It was a nightmare scenario for Buckeye fans, but it appears to have been nothing more than a scare.

After kneeling next to Daniels for a short while, Pryor got up and walked away without a limp. He didn't seem to lose any balance in his knee during the tripod exercise and was even jumping off it during the one-leg hops.

It still wouldn?t surprise me if he was wearing some kind of protective sleeve for tomorrow?s kick scrimmage at Ohio Stadium just in case (he wasn't wearing anything today).

Here are the rest of my observations from inside Friday?s spring football practice.

Kick scrimmage today

The Buckeyes will play their annual kick scrimmage today at Ohio Stadium, beginning at 9:30 a.m. The scrimmage will feature kickoffs, punts, returns and field goals.

Looking ahead, next Saturday is the jersey scrimmage at Ohio Stadium, which is pretty much the truest test of just what the depth chart looks like. In that scrimmage, as opposed to the spring game on April 24, the first-string offensive and defensive units will not only play together, but also against each other.

The spring game, meanwhile, will be a mixture of starters and reserves together.

Eleven Eyes: Friday Practice Observations
By Alex - April 9th, 2010

Homan expects big things this year (photo/11W)It’s been just over a week since the Buckeyes opened up their spring practice sessions that will commence on April 24th with the annual Scarlet and Gray Spring Game. While the players are still getting the rust off from the lull between their Rose Bowl victory and the beginning of April, this period is giving the coaches some good opportunity to work in a lot of fundamentals and evaluate players in some early position battles.

We were on hand for today’s practice and were not disappointed in what we saw out of the Buckeyes. There are certainly going to be some good battles to the end for open positions, especially at left tackle, strong-side linebacker, and at receiver (after Posey and Dane), but most of the two-deep is looking pretty solid and the team looked very comfortable playing together, even for it being so early into the spring.

Here are some notes from today’s practice, as well as some video of Brian Rolle, Luke Fickell, and Ross Homan taken after practice:

We will see how this effects JTs decision making during games this season. On 4th downs with a short field we may see the Buckeyes go for it more this season. If the long distance FGs are not viable and the offense is the most experienced unit he has; he may decide to rely on the offense to keep the ball by making a first down.

My thoughts as well...can you imagine a world where JT chooses to regulary go for it instead of taking a 45 yard FG? LOL!
