Buckeye Football: Spring spruce-up
Sunday, March 28, 2010

Think of the Ohio State football program like a house about to be put on the market. First, it needs some fixing up - not rebuilding, because OSU doesn't rebuild - but some remodeling.

In the Buckeyes' case, the areas of interest include a hinge (offensive left tackle), a joint (Terrelle Pryor's knee), a wall (defensive line) and a security fence (safeties).

After the projects are completed, it gets listed, and on April 24, there will be a public open house in Ohio Stadium.

Expectations are high coming off a fifth-straight Big Ten championship, an 11-2 season and a Rose Bowl victory over Oregon.

So is this property worth buying? With spring practice set to begin Thursday, Dispatch beat reporters Ken Gordon and Tim May take a look:

ISSUE: Is Pryor's left knee a concern?
Gordon: I don't think so. It certainly has drawn a lot of attention since he suffered the partially torn ligament last October and had arthroscopic surgery in early February. But all indications are Pryor will participate in spring drills normally - and remember, quarterbacks generally are off-limits to contact in spring, anyway. On Wednesday, Pryor Tweeted that the knee was doing well and he was ready for spring ball.

May: Anything that makes him feel more confident in the joint is a good thing. I remember him pulling up on his first significant run in the Rose Bowl as he slipped out of bounds, then putting his head down and cutting up with the gusto of Jim Brown in the fourth quarter on the clock-eating drive that secured the win. That said, any extra work Joe Bauserman and Kenny Guiton Jr. can gain would be a good thing.

ISSUE: Who will replace LT Jim Cordle?

I think today is the official start of spring football!! Hell yeah!!! One of the best times of the year for a lot of us because it's fun to hear about some of the young guys stepping up and seeing some new faces in there.

Heres to a healthy and productive spring, O-H

That Mark May video on ESPN was surprisingly...accurate. He didn't dog on the B10, he didn't say TP was overrated...apparently he is jumping on the bandwagon.

Still hate him.

I'm not really bashing you...but I find it funny that May's views are now accurate because he's saying something positive.

I'll grant that May is intentionally controvesial (douche), which makes him often wildly inaccurate...

Spring Outlook: Who to Watch For
By Brandon Castel

There will be plenty of familiar faces on the practice field when the Buckeyes open spring camp today, none more recognizable than Terrelle Pryor.

Ohio State?s 6-6 quarterback enters his junior season in Columbus, where he heads an experienced group that is expected to compete for a sixth straight Big Ten title and possible national title in 2010.

Along with Pryor, names like DeVier Posey, Justin Boren, Brandon Saine, Ross Homan and Cameron Heyward will also be found on preseason teams aplenty this fall, but the spring is all about the unknowns.

What young players will emerge to take the spots left by those who departed? Which diamond in the rough will surface, which five-star prospect will realize his potential?

Schools like Ohio State reload with talent every year. Here?s a look at the some of the names you need to know to be ready for spring ball.

John Kampf: Pryor's knee takes top priority for Ohio State
Published: Thursday, April 01, 2010
By John Kampf
[email protected]

When spring practice opens today for the Ohio State football team, much attention will be directed toward to holes left on the depth chart by departing players.

More eyes will be directed toward a position that is not up for grabs.

Quarterback.

Terrelle Pryor is not only coming off his best performance as a Buckeye in the Rose Bowl. He is also coming off arthroscopic knee surgery.

How he has progressed since having surgery in early February will be closely monitored over the next month. Today is the first of 14 April practices, with the spring schedule wrapping up on April 24 with the annual spring game.

Pryor was magnificent in the Rose Bowl, throwing for 266 yards and running for 72 yards in the Buckeyes' 26-17 win over Oregon. How he reacts from surgery will be interesting. His mobility, as well as his passing accuracy, will be under the microscope from Day 1 of spring practice — which isn't much different than every other day he has spent in an OSU uniform since arriving on campus.

There are a slew of questions for Coach Jim Tressel and his staff to find answers for over the next month, including — believe it or not — Pryor's back-up. True, last year's backup — Joe Bauserman — returns for his senior season, but redshirt freshman Kenny Guiton might have closed the gap on Bauserman and could contend for that spot on the depth chart this spring and beyond.

Some of the other things to keep an eye on over the next month are:

Who is going to take over for Jim Cordle at left tackle?

Big Ten spring practice preview: Ohio State
Can Pryor, offense build off of strong Rose Bowl showing? Dave Miller
April 01, 2010

Ohio State Buckeyes
2009: 11-2 (7-1)

What a difference one game can make in changing the perception of a quarterback ? and possibly an entire program. As Ohio State opens spring practice Thursday, Columbus is still abuzz over Terrelle Pryor's dynamic Rose Bowl performance. The question on many Buckeyes fans? minds now is whether head coach Jim Tressel, fresh off a two-year contract extension, will open up the offense for the signal-caller and allow him more freedom in the passing game or if conservatism will continue to rule the OSU playbook.

After the bowl victory over Oregon, Tressel called Pryor?s performance a turning point in his quarterback?s career ? one that has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride. However, keep in mind that although the highest of expectations were bestowed upon him since he was aggressively recruited out of high school, Pryor will only be a junior with the arrival of fall. We know that he will never have perfect throwing mechanics, but we also know that not many quarterbacks possess his rare set of skill and athleticism.

In 2009, Pryor threw for 2,094 yards and 18 touchdowns against 11 interceptions. The biggest areas of improvement for him will be his accuracy and taking some steam off his throws, as he only completed 56.6 percent of his passes last season. Just stick in a tape of the Rose Bowl and that?s the quarterback Tressel and his staff would love to see on a consistent basis.

Imagine if Pryor continues to make strides and the offense indeed becomes more balanced. That?s a scary thought for Big Ten opponents.

So what about his health? Pryor dealt with a bum knee throughout ?09 and finally had arthroscopic surgery to repair a partially torn PCL ligament in his left knee in February ? a surgery that was more thorough than initially expected. Should Buckeyes fans be worried? Pryor said he?ll ready for spring drills, but it will be interesting to see if he?s fully mobile or if there?s noticeable favoring of the leg during the spring game on April 24.

Tailbacks Brandon Saine and Dan Herron highlight a loaded Buckeyes backfield that also will feature Jaamal Berry and the heavily hyped Carlos Hyde. Saine averaged 5.1 yards per carry in racking up 739 rushing yards, while Herron added seven scores and 600 yards on the ground. Saine also was dependable catching the ball out of the backfield, hauling in 17 catches for 224 yards last year. Hyde will definitely have a chance to move up the depth chart this spring, but he will also be competing with Jermil Martin and Jordan Hall for the limited number of carries behind Saine and Herron.

Questions to answer as Ohio State starts spring football practice today
By Doug Lesmerises, The Plain Dealer
April 01, 2010,

Ohio State starts spring practice at 3:30 today, with the jersey scrimmage scheduled for April 17, which is the real chance for players to impress the coaches, and the spring game at Ohio Stadium on April 24.

Here's what is up in the air as the Buckeyes start what everyone is assuming is a legit national title run this season.

* Left tackle - Jim Cordle is gone, with Mike Adams expected to slide back in at the job he held for part of last season. J.B. Shugarts is at right tackle, but Marcus Hall could push both of them. The rest of the offensive line returning starters - Justin Boren and Bryant Browning at guard, Mike Brewster at center - are set.

* Defensive line - Starters Thaddeus Gibson and Doug Worthington are gone, as are many of the backups who gave the line great depth last season - Todd Denlinger, Lawrence Wilson and Robert Rose. Cameron Heyward and Dexter Larimore are back as starters, with John Simon, off a great freshman season, and Nathan Williams the leading candidates to step into the starting lineup.

If Jamaal Berry has a great spring, is there any chance of him moving ahead of Dan Herron or Brandon Saine on the Ohio Statecdepth chart come fall?

Adam Rittenberg(2:14 PM)
From talking with offensive coordinator Jim Bollman last night, Berry will be part of the mix as long as he stays healthy. Ohio State really liked what it got from Jordan Hall last year, and Brandon Saine and Boom Herron are at the top of the depth chart. Berry needs a strong spring to keep pace with the others. Bollman said this is the deepest Ohio State has been at RB in recent memory.

Akili (Hilliard, Ohio)
You spoke to Jim Bollman. Do you expect the routes to open up for Terrelle Pryor if he continues to develop (not just the safe routes he threw in the Rose Bowl)? When do you think the coaching staff will have enough confidence to risk a little?

Adam Rittenberg(2:36 PM)
I got the sense that Bolls wants to go in that direction. Ohio State needs to find more options in the passing game for Pryor. Right now, DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher are the only two sure things. Ohio State needs to identify a No. 3 wide receiver, and there are some very high hopes for Jake Stoneburner at tight end. Stoneburner could really provide a big lift. If those parts come together and the offensive line continues to progress, I don't see why Ohio State wouldn't open things up more.

OSU needs group effort to boost pass attack
April, 1, 2010
By Adam Rittenberg

The Rose Bowl shed new light on Terrelle Pryor and the Ohio State offense -- a glow that Buckeyes fans hope doesn't go anywhere.

The game marked a potential turning point for Pryor and the offense, a place where the Buckeyes could build. Ohio State offensive coordinator Jim Bollman certainly hopes so.

But Bollman also knows it's not that easy.

"You're not going to walk on the field [Thursday] and all of a sudden, be at that point," Bollman said. "How hard we all have to work, how focused we have to be to get back to that point, that's what's in front of us. That's the challenge, that's how you try to improve.

"You're not working toward an unseen performance level. We've been to that point. But everybody's got to understand what it takes."

Loosely related to football, but The Oval was rockin today. Hopefully we have weather like this for the spring game...I've never seen so many attractive females in one spot (sunbathing at that). Life at OSU = the best.

Sunny first day of spring

The mood fit the weather out on the practice field today, as OSU kicked off the first of its 15 spring sessions.

What's not to like, when the sun is shining and it's 80 degrees....and your quarterback looks fully healthy, and Tyler Moeller is back running around, and you have so much of your team back from the 2010 Rose Bowl championship squad?

Here's a quick look at some news and notes from today. I have not played back my tape of interviews, so if I leave something out, I'll try and come back with another entry in the morning:
