What ham sandwich? Damn that is some fine ass. Guys, could you lay off the babes for a while? I'm trying to graduate from sex therapy, and pics like that just make me want to go out and lay some PVC pipe.

Media sounds like a broken record.

1st it was the SEC Speed, then the Big 12 Speed, now the Pac-10 Speed..

Notice to all Big 10 teams - if the opponent says "SPEED!", roll over and give up because you don't have a chance...

Give me a break.

:osu: Speed :)

lol Right.

What always kills me is to hear a commentator talk about a school's recruiting efforts and say something to the effect, "They scout down there for their speed." lol

It's ridiculous. To hear some talk the only kids in the country capable of running a 4.4/40 or better are either in the southeast or California.

This AP article was tossed together in reposnse to Pryor not being one of the players made available at yesterday's press conference.

SI.com

Whether such kid-gloves handling of Pryor helps or hurts his play on the field is open to debate.

Yep, whether or not he speaks to reporters will obviously have a dramatic effect on his reading of defenses or his passing accuracy. GMAFB:roll2:

Putting the transitive property to rest

The contention made consistently on this forum that the transitive property should not be used to positively predict the outcomes of football games is indisputable. While transitivity can often be applied in algebra and geometry, use of the property in non-mathematical situations is often unsound.

As an attempt to illustrate the fallacy in using a mathematical construct in an abusive manner, let's remember that a ham sandwich is better than sex. A ham sandwich is better than nothing and nothing is better than sex, hence a ham sandwich is better than sex. Transitivity at its finest! :wink2:

However, with all due respect, Buckiprof's illustration may be humorous, but it does not adequately expose the logical defect of carelessly applying transitivity. The argument about a sandwich being better than sex is flawed because of inconsistent use of language, not simply because the transitive property does not apply.

The transitive property of inequality can be valid in a situation like this:

Ted is taller than Bob.
Bob is taller than Joe.
Therefore, Ted is taller than Joe.

While there are myriad reasons why transitivity does not apply in football contests, I suppose the summary basis is because the modus ponens (law of detachment) is unsound. In order for a syllogism to be sound the premises must be true in all instances.

Consider the argument:

Ducks > Trojans;
Trojans > Buckeyes;
Therefore, Ducks > Buckeyes.

While the structure of the argument is valid, the modus ponens is unsound because the premises are not true in all instances. Consider the first statement. On account of seemingly countless variables, any premise suggesting that Ducks > Trojans is true in all instances (even when limited to the same season) is unsupportable. For example, contests between teams that meet a second time in the same season often end differently.

There may be many reasons why one team should beat another, but transitivity should never be one of them.
