If defense wins championships, then Florida hanging 41 points on one of the better defenses we had this decade makes that addage null and void. I am inclined to believe that the better prepared team wins. I watched a few Oregon games this year. They have some very large problems on defense that Tressel will no doubt try to exploit. "Tresselball" will win this one... Bucks 27, Ducks 24.
Disagree here on a few points, hopefully I won't get off topic. First off, I would definitely question that 2006 was one of our better defenses..
I would say 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, and now 2009 might all be better. Probably not all of those.. 2007 had a serious whole at DT... But probably all the others.
Also: Defense wins championships.. As long as the offense doesn't royally fuck them over. Against Florida, our offense totally fucked us over. I think FLA's average scoring drive was something like 20 yards. That's not our defense's fault. That's the fault of a terrible, terrible offense.
But your point is incredibly relevant: Our team this year lost twice because we had a championship-winning defense, and our offense screwed us over. Our defense is not at the level where we can force a 3-and out, our offense gets a 3-and-out, and then our defense forces another.. All game long. We just can't, they get tired. That's what our offense was doing to our defense for much of the year, unfortunately.
If that happens against Oregon.. We will get massacred. That Oregon offense is too good to let them get a ton of possessions and let them run their up-tempo offense. Our defense will be exhausted.
But if we can run the ball, control the time of possession, and
end long drives with touchdowns, then I can't see us losing. Oregon's offense thrives on momentum--running a fast paced offense, keeping the defense on its heels, and attacking, attacking, attacking. They're also prone to 3-and-outs. They're an off and on offense- once they're on, they're on, but when they're off, they can be not so pretty, as they get stuffed behind the LOS.
It will be an easy win if we can keep their offense from getting in rhythm. A 3-and-out, and then a nice, long, sustained drive ending in 7 by our offense, keeping their offense off the field and out of rhythm.. Then rinse and repeat.
That, of course, is a big "if". To do so, Pryor needs to keep defenses honest. We will attempt to run the ball down their throats all game with Saine and Herron. They will start sneaking in the box. Will Pryor be able to force them back out with his arm? That's the big question. If yes, we win. If not, we probably don't.
