Game Thread 2010 Rose Bowl: Ohio State 26 Oregon 17 (Final, 1/01/2010)

to me, it played out a lot like the USC game. we needed a late TD to make it a 2 score game. we didn't get it against the Trojans. we did against the Ducks. with the score 19-17 a FG does no good. just as FG did us no good with the score 12-10 against the Trojans.

and Blount's fumble was not an unforced error. he heard footsteps and was too busy looking around for Silver Bullets to secure the ball.

and this is one instance where the best defense WAS a good offense. the fact that the O held the ball for 42 minutes had just as much to do with the fact that the Ducks only managed 17 points as the defense stopping them did.

it was a total team effort, and the better team won. but don't cheapen it by dogging the Ducks. we just beat an outstanding team. the best since 11/18/06.

Everyone keeps saying on TV that "the Big Ten hadn't won a Rose Bowl in 10 years!" There had been 9 games since that Wisconsin win in 2000. Three of those games, however (2002, 2003, 2006) did not feature a Big Ten team. Three of the remaining six games (2004, 2005, 2007) were losses by Michigan, who doesn't actually play football anymore as far as I know. I can't excuse the 3 remaining losses.

Be careful what you say there. Michigan played some USC/Texas Teams that were very talented and we could've lost either of those games too. Remember we did lose three BCS bowl games before breaking through yesterday. So take caution in thinking we would've rolled through the Rose Bowls while the other big ten teams struggled. While we're most definately a top program and the best in the big ten (by a mile) we haven't exactly set the world on fire either on the big stage up until last night.

Missed an obvious block in the back... terrible.
My last post before the damn power went off to my house. Missed from this point (right before Blount's fumble) up to right after Pryor's touchdown pass to Posey. Needless to say I was not happy. I was able to go to a friend's house and see the last 7 minutes and Tresselball ran to perfection the last 5. Thankfully that friend had DVR'd the game so I could see what I missed after all the post-game festivities were over. It was also a great joy to read through the thread from the point where I left off until today's posts this morning. I was smiling the entire time, even in the few low spots... reading reactions to plays that already happened is entertaining when you know the final outcome turns out well for the team you're rooting for.

I have nothing new to add to what has already been said... great gameplan by the coaching staff and even better execution by the offense and defense. Holding the Oregon offense to 17 points and 260 yards is absolutely spectacular. It's another awesome day to be a Buckeye fan!

Congrats to Oregon on their fine season and good luck next year... the Ducks will definitely be a force in 2010.

Game thoughts:
1. ROSE BOWL CHAMPIONS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. Except the Buckeyes using the pass instead of the run the game went how I think most of us thought it would. We all knew Oregon was going to make some plays but the Defense would give the Buckeyes a chance to win as long as the offense scored around 20.

3. Rose Bowl MVP Pryor can still get better. And he was really good.

4. Know its a win but I still question why Herron gets more carries than Saine. And not just carries either, reps period. Ohio State had a better offense when 3 was catching passes too.

5. I thought, like the announcers did, that Worthington played a heckuva game.

6. Homan proved he's our best linebacker.

7. Masoli needs to grow. If he's 6'3 does Worthington tip the ball for the Homan interception?

8. The big question in Duck world is whether Chip should have kicked the field goal. We all know of course down 2 scores with a chance to make it a 1 score game you have to kick. As important though is the preparation all year for the kick. If you're not using your kicker all year long then of course he's not going to be ready when the Rose Bowl is on the line. This is why JT doesn't hesitate to kick. JT ensures that his kickers know they can make a field goal in important situations. That's why you kick the field goal in the 1st quarter with the game on the line. Because at some point you will need your kicker. And he has to know he make the field goal.

I should have put the Michigan sentence in sarcasm font, apparently. Just taking a jab at our rivals. My point was that the Big 10 had not lost 10 straight Rose Bowls but only (still a lot) six in a row.

I just wanted to add on to what a game Pryor had. Even on his errant throws you could tell he was really playing well.

Examples..

1. His throw that Posey dropped on the opening drive(much like the one he later caught for a TD)

2. The throw that he beamed in to Sanzo with a heavy blitz, and if not for a devistating hit by the Oregon Saftey, it would've been another first down.

3. The Post route that Pryor threw before Sanzo's break that was behind him. If he throws the ball infront of Dane he WALKS in for a TD. He was wide open and pryor recognized it but just didn't put the ball on the money. Main thing to me though is he recognized where to go.

4. His INT. When he threw it I was thinking "Oh my god he has a man running up the sideline with no one behind him!!" I honestly couldn't tell it was falling short and thought it was a sure TD. Of course he under threw it but he saw the guy and just didn't put enough into it to get it there.

haha I mean I got the jab don't get me wrong. Just don't forget our recent struggles as well (outside of the Rosebowl) because we certainly could've represented the Big Ten much better as well (namely against Florida, and LSU).

1. Two back shoulder throws to Posey. Both great passes, great body control by the receiver, and should have resulted in two TDs.

3. I think that Pryor put it exactly where he wanted it to go. IMO, Pryor expected Sanzo to sit in the zone. If Pryor had thrown the post to where Sanzo was going, Sanzo would have taken a huge hit, and who knows what would have happened?

All-in-all, I agree with you. Even the throws where Pryor missed, it looked like he was playing with great confidence last night.

The first throw you mention was not errant. It was exactly where it needed to be. Posey turned wrong.

The second throw was a completion until Sanzo got leveled. That said, Pryor did leave Sanzo out to dry on that one.

The third one you mention was a miss. I agreed with Musburger that Pryor must have read the route as a fly and Sanzo was running a post (I think Post was the correct read) Probably his 3rd worst pass of the day

The fourth was his second worst pass of the day. The worst pass of the day was the completion to the Pride of Springboro.
