2010 OSU Fall Camp (check in on 8/5)

Previewing Camp Tressel
Sunday, August 8, 2010
The Columbus Dispatch

Interesting, but the buildup to this Ohio State football season has seemed rather subdued, considering the Buckeyes are No.2 in the first USA Today coaches poll.

Maybe it's because OSU fans have been through this a few times before in the first nine years of the Jim Tressel era. Or perhaps it's because they know that as stacked as the 2010 Buckeyes seem to be, there are questions that must be answered in this preseason camp.

Dispatch beat reporters Ken

Gordon and Tim May take a look as the Buckeyes dive into the first full week of practice:

May: My larger questions concern the unproven but promising depth on the defensive line, the replacement of both starting safeties and whether the kicking game will be up to snuff in all phases, especially in coverage. But then, all teams have questions this time of the year, even Alabama, which is replacing nine starters on defense. Funny, but if 'Bama wasn't the 2009 national champion, it probably wouldn't be in the top three of the poll, but there it is at No.1. People best remember what happened last, and they remember the Crimson Tide holding off Texas in the title game, and Ohio State and quarterback Terrelle Pryor handling Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

Gordon: I agree that too much emphasis is placed on how a team finished and how many players return. Nobody takes into account the emergence of younger players. The Ohio State defensive line is an interesting example of that. There are several relatively new faces who could make a big difference, such as Melvin Fellows, Solomon Thomas, Garrett Goebel, Jonathan Newsome, Adam Bellamy, and possibly even an incoming freshman. Entering 2006, everyone focused on OSU losing A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter at linebacker - who knew about James Laurinaitis? The line needs to restock its depth after losing some high-quality seniors, and it will be a good spot to watch in camp.

I think I've solved the upload bug, so I should have some pics going up live during the two events.

I'd start checking in at 2 pm for practice shots & 5:30 pm for media day. I'm also going to be taking game video (which won't be going up live

If you guys can link the galleries and post some shots in the thread, that would be great.

First glimpse at fall camp

Not too much time (deadline looms for the print edition story!), but thought I'd pass along a few observations from the first day reporters were allowed to watch fall camp.

-- First off, there were no huge surprises on the depth chart. It should not be news that Mike Adams and Andrew Miller are rotating at left tackle, or that Etienne Sabino (LB) and Jermale Hines/Ohrian Johnson (S) are in starting positions.

Instead, it was more interesting to see who was filling up the second-team spots. That gives you a clue which players are emerging as key backups.

To that end, the second team offensive line was Marcus Hall at left tackle, Sam Longo at left guard, Corey Linsley at center, Jack Mewhort at right guard and Josh Kerr at right tackle.

The second-team defense went like this:

DE: Melvin Fellows, Solomon Thomas
DT: Garrett Goebel, Adam Bellamy
LB: Andrew Sweat, Dorian Bell, Storm Klein
CB: Travis Howard, Donnie Evege
S: Aaron Gant, C.J. Barnett

Just got back. Will get a chunk edited for 45 min, upload those, then come back an hour later and try to finish up (I have an hour responsibility elsewhere).

JW, Svoboda (from Twitter) says that the pants gray look darker than past years...any thought?
Definitely looked darker to me too, looked good.
