Not to stick up for Dave but I think he said "trap" games...fwiw

He did use that word (trap) if I remember correctly; but he also said very plainly that the PU game last year was the first time since '04 that the Buckeyes lost to a team that did not end the season in a BCS bowl. Understandable as it may be, it's still wrong.

I disagree with Dinardo's comments about how we need 1 back to step up and be "the man". Last year Boom and Zoom combined for 1300+ yards and double digit touchdowns. There is nothing wrong with those numbers. Unless you have a guy that is head and shoulders above the rest you should split the carries.

I have no doubt that if Herron got 80% of the carries he would put up big numbers. Just like Saine would put up big numbers with more carries. In my opinion no one needs to "step up" and take over at RB this year. Sounds like there will be fewer designed runs for TP this year which will open up a few more carries.

Howerver, I do like Saine's ability to catch out of th backfield which makes the defense play a little more honest when he is in there.

I couldn't take the SEC promotion so I stopped watching "College Football Live" a long time ago (hearing that Erin Andrews is hosting reinforces my decision), but was it Bob or Brian Griese that predicted it?

I'm thinking it was Brian, but don't know.

Bob may not have wanted to miss the Early Bird at he Sizzler to tape the show.

It was Brian

Robert Smith had to do all he could to contain his laughter.

"Need" might be a little strong, but I agree with Dinardo in general. By having a back emerge to be "the man", I take it more like he's saying OSU needs one of their backs to be the 1st/2nd round type back that some of them are capable of. Basically, go from good to great. And if only one back takes that step I think he'd get more carries than Saine or Herron and be considered "the man". Having that caliber of a back on the team would be huge for the offense.

I bet Dinardo would also say the emergence of two "the man"'s and having them split carries like last year would be even better.

The "like last year" is the bit where Dinardo has been very clear (that this is not his position). He has said that Boom and Zoom are very good backs, but they're not Beanie (and I agree with him on that).

Where I disagree with him is his claim that the Buckeyes cannot be an elite team without a "feature back". With the reports out of camp about TP's progression, I seriously doubt that a "Lighthouse"* is necessary for this to be a truly elite team.

*Lighthouse is the term that Ohio State used for the big, strong, fast tailback that Dinardo refers to - at least back in the days of Keith Byars. I don't know if they still use the term or not.

Agreed. Not every national championship team has the premier feature back. Texas, LSU, and Florida are recent examples of that.

Agreed 100%...I thought that he was offbase there (I think he was just looking hard for a weakness and had trouble though). With all those fresh legs and good runners in, we can change it up but still get equivalent production to an elite back imo. Shoot, maybe even better with all the riches we have.

I look for JT to rotate 4 or 5 backs early to see if one emerges that he can ride late into the season and if they are all good he will play the ones who dont fumble. I like where we sit at RB. Our offense will hinge on TP as he goes so goes our O. I look for JT to turn TP loose just like he did with TS. Go Bucks

Jersey scrimmage up next

Once the team returns from its "double secret" practices in Xenia today, the next event is tomorrow's semi-annual jersey scrimmage in Ohio Stadium (closed to the public).

I always enjoy watching these, more so than the spring games, because they pit offense vs. defense and first team vs. first team, with fewer limitations on formations and play-calling.

Here's some things I will be keeping an eye on:

The jerseys aside, this scrimmage also should help set the depth chart at several positions before the season opener Sept.2 vs. Marshall. There are questions that need answers, such as:

? DeVier Posey and Dane Sanzenbacher are the two starting wide receivers, but who will be next in the rotation from among Taurian Washington, Grant Schwartz, Chris Fields, James Jackson and freshman Corey Brown?

? Who is going to start at left tackle: Mike Adams or Andrew Miller?

? Can Solomon Thomas handle the load at pass-rush defensive end while Nathan Williams lets his strained left knee heal, and will Melvin Fellows and possibly a freshman such as David Durham step up to provide depth?

? Brandon Saine and Daniel Herron are the returning regulars at running back, but will Jordan Hall or Jaamal Berry be the next man in line on game day?

? Etienne Sabino stepped into the No.1 spot at strongside linebacker, but is Andrew Sweat - recovered from a knee injury - pushing him for playing time?

There are other things to watch, but one thing Heyward doesn't want to see is the offense having its way.

"The offense has gotten on our butt a couple of times" this preseason, he said. "We're just going to have to keep getting better. I think if we can just mesh well, and keep being competitive out here, we'll be fine."
