2010 has 35 bowls - is that too many?

If the bowls aren't losing money, and the fans are watching the games, no big deal. There really is only one game that has any major implications in the end of the day. I think it's a great experience for the players, so who cares how many bowls there are. We as fans will watch.

That's a problem i see though. Hardly anyone watches, or goes to, alot of bowl games before Dec 30/31 when BCS conferences get involved. I don't see how new bowl games will make money off of it. With more bowl games, everyone will be fighting for TV time as well, which means less money.

I think it is dumb to include this many teams in the postseason. You are talking more then 50% of the teams in the country getting to play in the offseason. We just need a playoff system...plain and simple.

FYI
Football bowl TV ratings up 8% | Solomon's Wisdom - al.com

Nineteen bowls outperformed last year's ratings, nine saw their numbers drop, and six remained the same. Meanwhile, the total re&shy:wink2:orted bowl attendance stayed nearly the same, and 20 of the 34 games listed increased crowds from a year ago.
...
ESPN continues to demonstrate that bowls provide solid programming numbers in late December and early January. ESPN's 24 bowls averaged a 2.6 rating, a 6-percent increase from last year when it aired 23 games, and up 13 percent from two years ago when ESPN televised 21 games.

Realy?? Who even cares about these [censored]ty games??

Alumni of the respective schools most likely care, families of the players and coaches most likely care, those of us who love and savor college football most likely care, those of us who are bored most likely care and finally people on Christmas most likely care, I guess. Seriously, why oppose more college football? You have a remote, use it.

I'll ask the impossible. Let's just talk about the number of bowls, and not make this another 'We need a playoff' thread.

I knew it was impossible.

Me too. At least it went one page w/out a mention, Bill.

It definitely isn't that impressive for a team to make it to a bowl game, anymore. Assuming that they're still requiring 6 wins for a team to become bowl-eligible, that's really not that big of a feat. Schedule 3 non-conference patsies, and a team can coast to a 3-5 conference record. All of the "big" schools should be bowl-eligible at least 90% of the time. "We made a bowl game this year" no longer means much to many teams. To some teams in the "mid-major" conferences, it still has some meaning. But it's been replaced by "We made a New Year's Day bowl game this year" and "We made a BCS bowl game".

But college football always beats no college football. I say that the last bowl game should be a week before the NFL draft, the spring game should be the week after the draft, followed by a month of additional practice, and then the first game of the year should be in the beginning of June.

WAY too many bowls. It means almost nothing to make it to a bowl game nowadays. That being said...as long as the almighty dollar has a hand in the process, they'll continue making more to soak up sponsorship cash and every other profit the networks and schools can grab with that one extra game.

Orlando to host AAC-Sun Belt in '15

The American Athletic and Sun Belt conferences will participate in a new bowl game in Orlando, Fla., in 2015, sources said Tuesday.

The addition of the game -- it will be called the Cure Bowl and benefit breast cancer-related charities -- will increase the number of bowls in 2015 to a record 40, although that includes the College Football Playoff title game, so only 78 bowl teams will be needed.

There are 39 bowls (requiring 76 teams) expected for the coming season -- up from 35 games and 70 teams that went to bowls in 2013.

Cont'd ...

---

The Cure bowl sounds like a shitty destination for a couple of emo 6-6 teams that would be better off killing themselves.

1. When you have as many "sports networks" desperate for something to cover, you are going to have suppliers willing to fill the market.
2. When you have a tourist industry looking to fill hotels, bars and restaurants, you are going to have city and state CsofC, willing to promote and provide the upfront money.
3. Enough people would prefer to watch even a bad football match up than most of the crap the regular networks provide - including me - to make it worth their time to telecast.
4. So the networks are given the product they need. Tourism get's their hotels, bars and restaurants some business.
5. My question remains: WTF are Chicago, Detroit, Minneapolis, Columbus, Omaha, Milwaukee? WTF are B1G ADs, coaches, fans?
6. Wake up! The Big 10 is the only conference without a chance of playing or winning a playoff game in their home region. There's a reason home teams are given +7 points by Vegas at the beginning of figuring the odds.
