2010 Basketball Team/Player Rankings

Free Rivals - Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting - No. 1 class in 2010 gets even stronger

The rich only get richer.

Ohio State remained on top of the Rivals.com 2010 national team recruiting rankings and further entrenched itself into the No. 1 spot by recently adding Rivals150 prospects Aaron Craft and J.D. Weatherspoon.

Anchoring the Buckeyes' six-man class is Jared Sullinger, the country's premier big man and the No. 3 prospect overall.

Ohio State is joined by three other Big Ten schools - Illinois (No. 4), Michigan State (No. 9) and Purdue (No. 10) - in the national rankings.

2010 commits (National rank)
PF Jared Sullinger (3)
PF Deshaun Thomas (18)
SG Jordan Sibert (37)
PG Aaron Craft (104)
SG Lenzelle Smith Jr. (124)
PF J.D. Weatherspoon (137)

With far and away the best recruiting class in 2010, Ohio State is in familiar territory at the top of the recruiting rankings. Thad Matta has plucked some of the top prospects in his region, creating a formidable six-man class. Sullinger is the premier post player in 2010, while Thomas - a fellow five-star player - is one of the top scoring forwards in the country. Sibert and Craft have a strong chemistry as backcourt teammates on the All Ohio Red travel squad. Smith is a unique player with a feel for passing the ball, and Weatherspoon is a tremendous athlete with a lot of potential.

Rivals $ - Is this the best class ever for Matta?

Rivals.com Basketball Recruiting - Selby takes No. 1 spot in final Rivals150

That's lofty praise for Kanter, who is ranked two spots ahead of the always-reliable Jared Sullinger (No. 5). Sullinger, who is headed to Ohio State, has proved himself to be the most consistent and productive big man on the travel team circuit.

Yahoo Sports: Rivals.com Ranking - Rivals150 for class of 2010

#5 Jared Sullinger

A big bodied post player who produces.

#22 Deshaun Thomas

Powerful forward who can score inside and out.

#39 Jordan Sibert

Smooth guard with good upside.

#111 Aaron Craft

Steady combo guard who is an excellent defender.

#132 Lenzelle Smith

Unorthodox player with good feel for the game.

#135 J.D. Weatherspoon

Incredibly athletic but raw forward.

i have no major quibbles with scout's rankings of ohio state's players. i agree that harrison barnes should be the #1 player, with enes kanter (#3) ranked ahead of sullinger. i like sullinger more than kyrie irving (#2), but they play vastly different positions and, therefore, are difficult to compare. i do see kanter and sullinger having the greatest impacts on their teams next year, though.

deshaun's drop to the bottom of the 5-stars was warranted. he racked up gaudy numbers, but his ability leveled around his junior season. sibert would likely be ranked higher had he not missed his final aau season due to injury. craft is well-positioned. save for his defense, there isn't anything particularly outstanding about his game, but he is nonetheless a competent and poised floor general who proved himself repeatedly during the aau seasons. i thought lenzelle had a chance to crack scout's top 100, but his exclusion was not unexpected. had he played on an aau team of all-ohio red's caliber, he probably would be a top 100 player. weatherspoon's exclusion was expected.

A year from now, having Sullinger rated #5 might look pretty foolish. Sullinger actually dropped in the Scout rankings - I guess being MVP of the McDonald's AA game only helps your ranking if you're going to Duke or UNC. Kanter IMO shouldn't be eligible - hard to believe that he wasn't paid under the table in Europe.
