Buckeyes sweep Fredo tonight on a 5-2 win. The sweep clinched the Ohio Cup as Ohio State went 4-0 v/s Ohio schools.

Sergio Somma on Andy Miele's goal that went through the net: "I shot one through the net (once). It caught on fire."

they can't even get enough money for a basketball training facility so it will be a long time before we get a nice intimate hockey facility. Doesn't Gene Smith know that sports is more important than academics:wink2:

With the move to the BTHC in the next couple of years, it's an absolute necessity. PSU is building one and without our own I fear we could be relegated to a perennial bottom of the conference status.

The more I think about this weekend, the more I feel it has the potential to be a real watershed imoment in rebuilding the program. We got the Fredo monkey off our back while sweeping one of the ccha's premier teams of the lazy half decade. Gotta love the diversity in the wins too: gutting out a nailbiter on Friday then c?ming back from a 2-0 deficit to curb stomp Fredo with five unanswered goals.

To quote Churchill after the north African landings, this not the beginning of the end but it may well be the end of the beginning.

See you in the playoffs Fredo. Bring your fucking shinebox.

Agreed, they're carrying a 6 game win streak going to western michigan, then Notre Dame at home. Buckeyes are sitting 6th, 4 points back from Fredo in 4th place. If they can carry this momentum thru western, then at least split with Notre Dame they will be sitting great.

One loss and one shootout win at Kalamazoo
The Ohio State men?s hockey team fell on the road to No. 18 Western Michigan, 4-2, Friday in Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Buckeyes, now 12-9-1 on the year (7-7-1-1 CCHA), and Broncos (12-6-5, 6-5-4-3 CCHA) will close out the series at 7:35 p.m. Saturday in Kalamazoo.


The Buckeyes trailed 1-0 after the first period and 2-0 early in the second. Later in the middle stanza Ohio State cut the lead to one (2-1) on Alex Szczechura?s power-play goal, but the Broncos responded less than two minutes later to regain a two-goal edge, which they carried into the third. In the third John Albert scored shorthanded to make it a 3-2 Western Michigan lead. The Broncos sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final minute, as WMU extended its unbeaten streak to six (5-0-1) and Ohio State ended its winning streak at six.


Western led 1-0 after the first period on a goal from Ian Slater at 2:04, following a Buckeye turnover. Shots were 10-7 in favor of the Broncos in the period, with Ohio State 0-for-1 on the only power play of the stanza.

A third-period goal from sophomore Jeff McNeil lifted the Ohio State men?s hockey team to a 2-2 tie with No. 18 Western Michigan (12-6-6, 6-6-5-3 CCHA) Saturday in Kalamazoo, Mich. The Buckeyes (12-9-2, 7-7-2-2 CCHA) won the shootout, 2-1 in three rounds, to earn the extra point in the CCHA standings.


The Buckeyes came from behind twice in the game. Junior Cory Schneider scored unassisted in the first to tie the score at 1-all. The Broncos had the only goal of the second period to again take the lead, but McNeil?s tally deadlocked the score midway through the third, marking the sixth time this season Ohio State rallied for a win or tie when trailing after 40 minutes. In the shootout Buckeye junior goalie Cal Heeter made two saves, with senior John Albert and Sergio Somma tallying.


Western Michigan controlled play through much of the first, outshooting the Buckeyes, 12-3, but the teams ended the stanza tied at 1. Max Campbell opened the scoring at 16:16, set up by Greg Squires. With time winding down, Schneider took advantage of a turnover by the Bronco goalie and put the puck into the net before he could get back in position, tallying with less than two seconds on the clock. Each team had one power-play chance in the period.

Beat the Domers (then #1 in CCHA, #8 in nation) 6-1 last night. Playing again tonight at 7:05 also being aired on bigtennetwork.com.

Cal Heeter is on fire and carrying this team at goal. tied for 5th in the CCHA and could move to 4th with a win tonight.

Heeter's first save was his 600th of the season. He is second nationally with 634 stops (one of only four goalies with more than 600 stops) and first in minutes played.

The program is progressing nicely. We're getting splits with teams that should sweep ups while pulling off the Fredo Sweep. Most of all, from the games that I've been able to see on tv, the team just looks better, crisper more intense.

At long last, it's clear that we have a coach who is developing and building this team...developing its potential and not just laying back and seeing where his talent will take him.

Yes this team is improving greatly although last night looked like a step backwards. They looked flat, looked like they weren't skating hard, and played very undisciplined. Tons of stupid penalties including taking a 5 on 3 away 2 seconds into it while being down 4-1. That has to be some type of record right?

They have had the puck bounce their way lately and Cal Heeter has been playing on top of his head. Cal took a lot of bad bounces and had probably his worst night of the season last night.

The game was just the third time in the last nine games Ohio State allowed more than four goals. Notre Dame is third nationally in scoring.

I didn't watch either game, so I'll take your word for it. Let's hope it was just an off night, and Oz gets them refocused this week. I wasn't hoping for any great strides or breakthrough moments until the final stretch of the CCHA season, so the last few weekends have really been an unexpected bonus.

The good news is the rest of the schedule favors the Buckeyes. If they stick to their game which is good defense, and good play from goal they could be in the top 4 come end of season.

At Alaska: #8 in ccha which could be 4 points as long as the travel doesn't kill them.

Michigan State: #10 in ccha very bad (can't believe i'm saying this) and hopefully 4 points.

At Michigan: #1 in ccha after we knocked the domers out. Hope for a split here.

Lake Superior: #9 in ccha bad again (only 4 wins) and hopefully 4 points

Ferris State: tied for #4 in ccha again could easily be 4 points.

Buckeyes are in 7th place in the ccha with 28 points, then 4 teams are tied for 4th with 29 points. 3rd place is miami with 36 points. 4th place is there for the taking and who knows after that.
