2010-2011 Lady Buckeyes Basketball (Big Ten Tournament Champions)

With another Big Ten title within reach, can OSU women's basketball reach the national spotlight?

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- There's no better way to get the attention of a veteran team than to take a star out of the lineup for the beginning of the season.

Ohio State's women's basketball team visits LSU Wednesday night in the third and final game the Buckeyes will play without All-Big Ten point guard Samantha Prahalis, who is sitting out three games for an NCAA secondary rules violation.

"I think she's anxious to come back," OSU senior center Jantel Lavender said. "She knows she can help us."

OSU women's basketball: Jackson eager to answer call
Wednesday, November 17, 2010
By Jim Massie
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The short and unhappy suspension of Ohio State point guard Samantha Prahalis ends after the seventh-ranked Buckeyes play Louisiana State at 8 tonight in Baton Rouge.

The three-game NCAA suspension forced coach Jim Foster to improvise in the manner of a tardy commuter hooking an umbrella handle to the last car of a departing train and holding on for dear life.

Foster managed to do so behind his four returning starters from a season ago and senior wing Alison Jackson while earning tough wins over Temple and Eastern Michigan.

Four years ago, Jackson was the second-most ballyhooed recruit in an OSU class that included All-American center Jantel Lavender, Brittany Johnson and Sarah Schulze.

As a high school senior, Jackson played with Lavender in the McDonald's All-Star Game. Through the class's first three seasons with the Buckeyes, Jackson has watched the other three play larger roles with the team.

So Jackson was thrilled when Foster looked her way to fill the early void caused by Prahalis' suspension. She began preparing for this season immediately after the NCAA Tournament loss to Mississippi State in March.

Lady Bucks defeat LSU 59-55

I found this strange:

"The Buckeyes took a three-point lead on an unconventional three-point play. Ohio State coach Jim Foster faked calling a timeout. The LSU players began to go to their bench, but the ball was still live. Alison Jackson made an uncontested layup.
Moreover, Barrett came on to the court as a substitute. The Lady Tigers were whistled for a technical foul for having six players on the floor. Hill made one of two foul shots."

How do you fake a timeout?

In the article this morning, it said that Foster motioned his players over to the bench, but never actually called time. Once everyone left Jackson, Hill passed it to her under the basket. Wish I could see a replay of that one. :)

Even though LSU doesn't seem to be the powerhouse they were in the past few years, this was a road win without Sammy. Kudos to Tayler Hill for playing 40 minutes in all three games so far to make up for her absence!

You can't fake a timeout, that was all on LSU!!!!!!!! The only player going to the bench was Hill - she was trying to hear Foster.

The other players from LSU start heading to the bench and left Jackson open. Then one player from LSU came on the floor which means now they have six players on the floor and that's a Technical Foul all day long.

How can Foster be held accountable for someone else's misunderstanding of what is going on.

:oh::io:
GO LADY BUCKS!!!!!

Glad to see the team get the road wins without Sammy.

I guess the team's success last night could be referred to as:

All I have to say is this about the situation...it was a mistake but at least we contacted the NCAA...OSU is out in front of these issues and are saving themselves from situations like Cam Newton. Its sucks for Sam but at least it won't bite us down the road. Our compliance department has done an outstanding job with damage control on stuff like this.

My dad used to say if you tell the truth up front the punishment will be minor but if I find out through the grapevine your ass is in serious trouble.

The ladies are 3-0 and it made/allowed other players like Taylot Hill to step up. It may be a good thing in the long run.

Sam just needs to have better judgement in the future...

Someone on another site said she flew on a private jet (belonging to ET's agent) with them to the draft.
If this is the violation, all I can say is horsebleep. Why should a guy's squeeze not be able to take a vacation with him just because she is a D1 athlete? Bad rule IMO.

Girls basketball: Years of work pay off for Africentric's Ferguson

Raven Ferguson, right, wants to lead Africentric to a state title. The Nubians won it when she was a sophomore.

Big boys aren't the only ones who think that crying in public is a sign of weakness.

Africentric do-it-all guard/forward Raven Ferguson spent the past three years getting beaten up and knocked down on City League and AAU basketball courts because she's the player that always has to be stopped.

Through the bumps, bruises and cuts, no one has even seen Ferguson's eyes get so much as moist.

When it came time to sign a national letter of intent with Ohio State, however, the big girl broke down like a tot sitting on Santa's lap for the first time. Ferguson realized how far she had come as a person and basketball player and remembered all the people who helped get her there.

The signing took place at Krumm Park Recreation Center on Alton Avenue near N. Cassady and E. 5th avenues.

It's a tough neighborhood, but it has been a safe haven for Ferguson since she was in single digits. It's where former director Mark Stansbery and others kept her busy and happy playing ice hockey, street hockey, football, golf and wrestling in addition to basketball.

"I grew up at that place," Ferguson said. "I wanted to sign there because I wanted to show the little kids that they could make it no matter where they come from. You can become a solid person. I think crying is a weakness. I couldn't help it, though."

flying in a plane with an agent and you're a student athlete is not smart IMO being a guy's squeeze has nothing to do with it

tough neighborhood
is putting it mildly for that neighborhood

Ohio State 88, N.C. Wilmington 69

The Ohio State women's basketball team had that strange, tingling feeling yesterday in Value City Arena, the one that always marked the opening of "Wabbit Season" for Bugs Bunny.

Down 69-62 with 6:17 to play, North Carolina Wilmington still had seventh-ranked OSU in its sights and was stalking an upset when the possibility went up in the cinders and smoke sparked by the Buckeyes' fast break.

Senior center Jantel Lavender scored nine consecutive points in a 13-3 run that lifted the Buckeyes to an 88-69 win. A quickened pace on both sides of the ball made all the difference in who bagged whom.

"We didn't allow (Ohio State), early on, to get started in transition,"

Seahawks coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke said. "We were there. Then I thought we relaxed a little bit, got a little bit unfocused. And Ohio State, they were ready.

"In that small window of time, they just pounced on us and took advantage of those opportunities."
