Anybody know why we didn't get the Howard girl from Toledo? She would be an incoming freshmen. She was ranked in the top 10 and we werent on her short list at all. Just curious.

When she first contemplated the possibilities of playing college basketball several years ago, Raven Ferguson didn't dare look much farther than Ohio State for a simple reason.

"It was the only school that I thought would like me," said Ferguson, a senior guard at Africentric. "I was young, you know?"

Years passed and letters from the likes of Michigan State, Louisville, the University of Miami and Xavier arrived to court her.

"It was like, 'Oh, other people do like me,'" Ferguson said.

Her first love, however, lingered and Ferguson decided to cast her lot with the Buckeyes after her official visit last week. She plans to sign a letter of intent to play for Ohio State on Nov. 10.

"I've wanted to play for them since the eighth grade," she said. "And I wanted my family and friends to be able to come and see me play. So why not go to Ohio State and help them win?"

Ferguson, a 5-foot-11 wing, averaged 23.8 points for the Nubians last season and was a second team Associated Press all-Ohio player. She is ranked No. 35 in the Class of 2011 by the ESPN HoopGurlz site and No. 44 by the Blue Star Report.

Africentric coach Will McKinney compared her favorably with former Ohio State playmaking guard Brandie Hoskins.

"I've coached (Ferguson) since the eighth grade," he said. "I also coached Brandie in the eighth grade. She's like Brandie with a little better jump shot. She is explosive. This (commitment) is really good."

Howard

The Howard girl is a top talent and would have fit the team's needs very well. I know OSU was quite interested but (from what I've heard) her academic record removed her from consideration. It happens. Hopefully for her, the young lady can stay on top of her studies and prosper down south.

6 time defending big 10 champions lose one to dayton. This is a little surprising, I wonder how hard the staff went after her....especially given their track record with bigs and centers. Lavender and Davenport have been great here. I take my 2 little girls to a few games a year to watch the lady bucks, they are very exciting to watch. Wish there was more info out there on who we are recruiting. Go Bucks

NYT has the goods on this one. This is true. Was not Foster as litlbuck would like to believe.

Westlake's Kaplana Beach chooses Buckeyes

Westlake's Kalpana Beach, left, will play basketball at Ohio State next season. - (Tracy Boulian/The Plain Dealer)

Westlake senior Kalpana Beach gave an oral commitment to Ohio State's basketball team on Monday, Westlake coach Chip Weiss said.

A Plain Dealer All-Star and second-team All-Ohio selection, the 6-1 forward averaged 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.7 blocks last season.

She originally gave an oral commitment to Notre Dame last fall, but she re-opened her recruitment this year.

"So many colleges wanted her and she made a quick deci- sion on her natural reaction," Weiss said. "She loved Notre Dame, but when she looked at everything, this was closer to home and it was the best fit for her to be a Buckeye."

Ohio State women: Redemption times fve
With every starter returning, Buckeyes want to atone for a disappointing end to last season
Thursday, November 11, 2010

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Sammy Prahalis, Brittany Johnson and Jantel Lavender have watched the video from the last game of the 2009-10 season enough times since March to think that it would not create such a visceral reaction.

"It's painful," Prahalis says.

"That's not who we are," Johnson insists.

Yet each replay shows Mississippi State ousting the favored Buckeyes from the women's NCAA Tournament in a stunning 87-67 second-round upset.

The loss is the last impression that many have of an Ohio State program dogged in recent seasons by similar NCAA failures. The same footage also has value.

"I pretty much got a film of all my weaknesses in that game," said Lavender, a first team All-America center. "I can see everything that I didn't do to help my team in that game just so that I can become a better player and be a better help to my team in the postseason."

OSU women: Keys to the season

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Key offensive players

This is double-barreled action again this season with senior All-American center Jantel Lavender and junior all-Big Ten point guard Samantha Prahalis triggering a robust running game. Lavender, a three-time conference player of the year, enters the season with 2,044 career points and 1,052 points. Prahalis set a Big Ten record with 289 assists last season.
Key defensive players

This is a collective issue: The Buckeyes couldn't stop strong perimeter players such as Duke's Jasmine Thomas or Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley from successfully attacking the rim with the shot clock running down last season. Conference coaches spotted the weakness and followed suit. Better team defense will make life easier.

Buckeyes beat Temple

PHILADELPHIA ? The Ohio State women?s basketball team found out tonight in the Liacouras Center what they probably already knew: Life without suspended star point guard Samantha Prahalis isn?t going to be easy.

In the first game of the season, the seventh-ranked Buckeyes had to overcome a fierce challenge from the Temple Owls before escaping with a 84-75 victory.

Playing without Prahalis, who earned a three-game suspension from the NCAA for a secondary rules violation, Ohio State looked to senior All-American Jantel Lavender.

She responded with a career-high 37-point and 12-rebound game. The Buckeyes needed every one of those points. The Owls had clawed back from an 11-point first-half deficit to tie the game at 58-58 with 8:48 to play.

Lavender scored two baskets and delivered an assist to Alison Jackson to help OSU edge ahead. Tayler Hill, who played 40 minutes at the point for Prahalis, followed with a score on a steal to give the Buckeyes a 66-60 lead with 7:10 remaining.

The lead still stood at six when Brittany Johnson nailed a three-pointer and Lavender followed with another basket to stretch the advantage to 75-64. The Owls couldn?t recover.

Ohio State 74 Eastern Michigan 62

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State played a second game yesterday without suspended point guard Samantha Prahalis to somewhat mixed reviews, a couple of which left All-American center Jantel Lavender scratching her head.

The seventh-ranked Buckeyes pulled out a 74-62 win over a plucky Eastern Michigan team in Value City Arena behind a 26-point, nine-rebound, seven-assist performance from Lavender.

Afterward, Eagles coach JeanMarie Gilbert complimented the winners during her postgame interview. She also cited a difference she thought she saw in the OSU team without Prahalis, who served the second of a three-game suspension she received from the NCAA for committing a secondary rules violation.

"They were extremely different," Gilbert said. "She's an emotional leader. I believe that Tayler Hill did a nice job at point, but she doesn't bring the same emotion, in our opinion.

"Prahalis can handle so well. She can split defenders. She sees dead people, if you will. She's just a tremendous passer. We were really thinking we could be in the ballgame, even win this ballgame, without her playing."
In the OSU locker room, the "dead people" line from the movie Sixth Sense caught the attention of everyone listening to the feed from the interview room.

"We heard everything she said," Lavender said. "It was just interesting. When she said Sammy sees dead people, we were like, 'What?' I understand it was a compliment. It was just weird the way she said it.

"Then she said we were tired. I just don't think we were doing the things (early) we need to do on offense to be successful. Tayler is doing a great job at the point guard. She's handling it."

The Eagles (1-1) did force the Buckeyes (2-0) to earn the win. They were active enough on the boards to score 16 second-chance points and scrapped their way to 14 points off the 18 OSU turnovers. They were down 25-14 with 5:57 left in the first half, but closed to within 28-26 at the break.

In the second half, Lavender scored 15 of her 26 points and delivered four of the seven assists. Sarah Schulze chipped in all 11 of her points despite playing with foul trouble. Hill ran the show for 40 minutes for a second straight game.
