2009 tOSU Running Backs discussion (official thread)

I've watched the Spring Game twice and I've been quite impressed with both Saine and Herron. Both showed excellent burst and solid power. A few other teams will have one back that's better than either Saine or Herron but there will be virtually no teams that will have a RB tandem that's better than Zoom and Boom.

I agree. These guys are relatively anonymous right now. That will not be so by the midpoint of the season.

Off of the top of my head I can only think of USC (obviously) and Penn State (With Greene and Royster) that are maybe more talented then Boom and Zoom. I hope Boom can continue to be a reliable back and that Zoom can carry over his spring to the fall.

Yeah that's quite a bold statement to say about these guys! I think they're talented and we'll be a very good team next year, but they won't be the best tandem of RBs next year. One of the best, but I don't see them being better than Oklahoma or Georgia Techs tandems either. But we will be fine with them next year!

I know sometimes we can be homers but it makes me laugh when other B10 teams fans dog Herron and Saine. I hope there are alot of Michigan and PSU fans eating crow.

I think Hyde could be a major wildcard here. He was a gem we snagged from Florida. He will be huge in short yardage. IMO Hyde will have 5+ rushing touchdowns this season...he will be needed.

USC, OU, UF, GT, OkSU, PSU, have better stables as of today. Cal, MD & OrSU have great enough starters to beat out Saine & Herron combined. Charles Scott is up there as well.

Can this change? Sure, but right now, OSU isn't close to having the best RB duo.

Don't forget Keiland Williams at LSU. Who do Oklahoma State have other than Kendall Hunter? Still, Herron as the workhorse and Saine as the spell back should be fine for Big Ten play. I just wish we had a third back (not named Pryor) who was of similar ability. I'd feel a bit better about the running game then, regardless of the line's woes.

I'll just say that I have more confidence in Danny than I had in Pittman going into 05. I think that Dan has shown more maturity than Pitt did after their respective first seasons, and even more than Beanie (though Beanie had the physical gifts that made him a superstar in waiting). Boom has shown good vision, and really caught on to making precise cuts to get into the second level in the later part of the season. I have no worries about Boom being our #1 back this year. Having TP and Saine as legit threats takes some of the pressure off him, but I think Boom has what it takes to be a 1,000yd back without any help. He's not going to be Beanie, but he will get us down the field in chunks, and break one every now and then. Even though this offense will be young, I think there will be a chemistry among the group that could be like the 06 team. Danny can be the lynchpin of that offense (along with TP), and, to me, he's already shown that he can carry the load.

I don't know if Boom will reach 1000yds with so many talented RBs in our backfield. Not a knock on his talent at all, but when he will be splitting carries with Zoom, Hyde, Berry and Pryor, and even possibly Flash Thomas its hard to put up big stats with that much talent in the backfield. But on the real, thats a good problem for us to have, lol! And I know its a little premature but if we get say 2RBs to sign for 2010, our RB competition is starting to look like a Midwest version of USC's! I'm just saying. That will be 7+, 4-5star RBs fighting for reps, now thats a great thing to have!

I think Boom+Zoom have the potential to be something special combined. They are somewhat similar but are balanced enough to be every down type of backs. I think if we have good carry over from spring, we have the potential to be one of the top RB tandems in the country. I thought they did a heck of a job behind our mix-n-match OL's in the spring game and I do think run blocking will be our OL's strong suit. Not to mention, you have Pryor as an added threat to run, so add him and I think you have a dangerous running game, whether the freshman show some flash or not.
