2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

Are you saying these guys were not good? From what I have been reading, these guys were considered great coming in. Here are what people were saying.

Ben Person "Ben is a great player and better yet a great kid. I think our troubles up front will be over soon enough with Ben, Mitchum, Skinner and Rehring on board and Boone on the way next year."

Steve Rehring "First off let me say that this guy is a complete bad ass.

This guy could very easily be the best offensive lineman we have had since LeChales Bentley as a Freshman. Sure he has made some freshman mistakes, but it has become clear that he is the type of player that you can run behind to get 3-4 yards a carry."

Alex Boone "After watching his films on Insiders, I was most impressed with the way he finishes blocks. His tenacity was obvious as he washed his man completely out of the hole...there were a few clips with combo blocks where you can see his footwork and technique. Kid will be a good one at the next level"

I understand that some kids can't make the progression from the High School level to the College level. I also think the coaching staff needs to look internally and see if what the coaches are doing is not helping these players develop on the next level. I would like Bollman to get replaced, although I don't think will ever happen. There was a post back in 2004 saying "What happens if Bollman is fired, or leaves, and the problems continue on the o-line?". Apparently this problem has not been fixed yet.

I'm saying they were very average, at best. I don't think it's relevant to look back at what people were saying about these guys when they were about to enter the program out of high school. They've proven what they can do on field at the D-1 college level at this point, and they didn't prove to be very consistent to me. I'm not saying JT and his offensive staff were the best instructors, or always had the best gameplan, but a good offensive lineman is a good offensive lineman, regardless of offensive scheme. The film doesnt lie.

Boone was picked up as a UDFA by the 49'rs, but he is not currently on the active roster. He may be on the practice squad? Rehring and Person are not in the NFL, I don't believe either were picked up as UDFA's by anyone. Now, I'm not saying that because these guys aren't in the NFL then they are not good players, playing in the NFL is extremely difficult. Look at some of the younger guys on the roster right now, you never what is going to happen when they get into school and camp all of those things. Where is Mike Adams?

I don't believe that you can point the finger to one coach, or one play, or one scheme and say "that's the problem." I do think there is a "gltich" in JT's process somewhere that is not allowing his teams to be successfull at the highest level, but I don't know what that glitch is, only he does.

"Just what is the identity of the offense?" said Craig Krenzel, quarterback of the Buckeyes' 2002 national championship team. "It's a question we seem to go back and forth on every year with coach Tress."

Krenzel is questioning the offense and daring to go back past Saturdays game to do so? Someone better tell him he's a spoiled, idiot, nit picker and not a real fan anymore.

Thanks for the healthy contribution to the discourse of this board.

Krenzel is not the only OSU QB that is questioning the direction of the offense. Bauserman wasn't too impressed with playcalling in the video last year. That was pretty bad as well.

Yeah, that's great and all, but the problem is (and what Jwinslow is trying to communicate) is that there is NO PLACE for this type of discussion in Terrelle's player thread. There are plenty of other threads to discuss this.

Bad (i.e. conservative) play calling must be contagious:

USC's Pete Carroll backs his play caller
Jeremy Bates' play selection is being criticized as too conservative, but Carroll says the first-year assistant coach is doing the right thing in bringing Trojans' young quarterbacks along slowly.

Entire article: USC's Pete Carroll backs his play caller -- latimes.com

and

Meyer: We were too conservative against Vols
Florida coach Urban Meyer admitted Sunday that the Gators were too conservative on offense in their 23-13 victory over Tennessee on Saturday.

I knew it was all those damn Conservatives fault! :pissed:

Oh wait, wrong thread. Sorry.

:tongue2:

I think our O hangs 31 plus points on the Illini this Saturday.....and that's my 'conservative' estimate. :wink2:

yeah, I'm confused about the 5-wide formation.. I was at the Navy game, and 7 or 8 times, our 3 wideouts to one side were covered by 2 db's. Where was the quick throw??

I believe that Pryor ran out of the formation every time but one. Never passed.

Why wouldn't we want to throw the pass when we line up like that??
