2009 tOSU Defense discussion (official thread)

this has kind of been on my mind since the end of the usc game. while i know its hard to judge the coaching staff based on the players performance on the field. the attitude and schemes we are currently using on defense seem to be a break from the norm established over the last 3 or 4 years under heacock. again i realize that may be because of personnel. but i have to wonder how much of this new attacking style on defense is due to fickell being the co-defensive coordinator. it could very well be observer error. but i feel like im seeing more stunts, line shifts, slants, dt's pinching with blitzing and or stunting on the outside, multiple blitz packages from the outside, and aggressive coverage from the cb's than i have in previous years under heacock.

i don't want to throw anyone under the bus or give anyone credit they may not deserve. but this is the d line we expected to start last year with. the names are largely the same but the result is unmistakably different. we watched these same d linemen get blocked 8 and 10 yrds down the field by usc last year. this year they ape raped usc's oline. now, i don't know if it is heacock or finkes or the maturation of the players or what... but imo the d as a whole has changed dramatically from a schematic and attitude standpoint.

when i watch them play, it almost feels mid 90's to me. i could be nuts and i haven't watched a tOSU d from the 90's play since well... the 90's. but i just kind of get that vibe.

edit: i we todd did

We did see this line do this against Colt and the Horns last year. But there can't be enough said for guys working practicing and playing together for 3 years. When your players can handle new items(especially due to their work ethic) they give them the long leash of stunts shifts and other attacks. It could be a perfect storm next year for our D.

Pat Forde puts the tOSU defense in his top five, along with some good company...

Oklahoma Sooners and Texas Longhorns ready to rumble in Dallas - ESPN

So which are the REAL top five defensive units, and in what order? The Dash reveals:

Alabama (12). The Crimson Tide are No. 2, but have played opposing offenses that rank a respectable 64th. Biggest achievement to date: shutting down Arkansas (No. 15 offense in the nation).

Texas. The No. 4 overall defense has bottled up offenses that rank 61st. Biggest achievement to date: holding the No. 2 offense in America, Texas Tech, to three points in the first half and 24 overall.

Florida (13). Nobody is giving up fewer than the Gators' 203 yards per game, but they've faced only one offense ranked better than 50th -- that's No. 48 Tennessee. Biggest achievement to date: zero points allowed in the second halves of two SEC road games.

Ohio State (14). The 11th-ranked Buckeyes D is allowing 272 yards per game despite having faced the best offenses of the defensive top 15, including one in the top 10 (Toledo) and another in the top 30 (Wisconsin). Biggest achievement to date: nine straight quarters of shutout football against Toledo, Illinois and Indiana.

USC (15). The No. 6-ranked Trojans defense has not been tested by anything like what it'll see from Notre Dame on Saturday, having faced just one offense in the top 70 (No. 49 California). Biggest achievement to date: just 26 points allowed after the first quarter this season.

I was thinking today about the different Offenses the Buck's D has faced so far this year:

NAVY - Triple Option
USC - Pro Style
TOLEDO - Spread
ILLINOIS - Spread
INDIANA - Pistol
WISCONSIN - Power I Formation

Interesting that the Triple Option gave us our most difficult test. Partly because of scheme and partly because it was the first game of the year. Any other Offenses out there that anyone can think of that we will be facing this year?

A couple things that I noticed on Saturday about the Defense is that they batted down a few balls (the DL has also got two INT's this year from Wilson and Denlinger) and that the open field tackling was excellent. It really frustrates a team/coaching staff when the get a guy in the open field but the D comes up and prevents them from getting a big gainer.

Ohio State 45
New Mexico State 0

Three shutouts in a season for the first time since 1996. Can we get a fourth?
