2009 tOSU Defense discussion (official thread)

All I know is that I've watched basically every OSU game since 2002, and this is without a doubt the most active DL I've seen since then. I may ultimately decide it's even better than the 2002 bunch. The linebackers may not be quite as talent as some other squads, but they're really good. I don't think our cornerbacks compare well to other units we've had during that time, but our safeties are outstanding, and that goes a long way towards compensating. Oh, and don't get me wrong. I think our corners are solid. We all knew we had a solid corner in Checkwa, but other guys have stepped up as well, Torrence in particular.

I think this will ultimately prove to be our best D since 2002. I know the numbers for the '06 squad were better, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that the D wasn't better in '05. The reality is that the offense was much better in '06, and that took a lot of pressure off a young defense. In '05, we had a developing offense that got progressively better as the year went on, but, particularly early in the season, the defense was primarily responsible for winning games.

Stats aside, this was one of the finest defensive performances I have ever seen by the Buckeyes. Nathan Williams, Thad Gibson and Cam Heyward basically were never blocked - at least, not without being held. Our d-line has more quality depth this season than we've had in my 40+ year memory of watching Buckeye football. Really remarkable that we could let the Badgers have the ball for 45 minutes and still hold them to 370 yards. Even with no rest, the d-line depth allowed them to continually harass Tolzien, who I believe is the best QB in the B11.

We got 6 sacks, and we should've had two other (Their QB somehow stayed up on his feet on the one, and on another threw the ball away as he was going down). I almost want to say the 2002 group was more talented starter wise, but man I don't know anymore. One things for sure our depth blows ANY year out of the water. The fact that I forgot to give Robert Rose a tip of the cap when going through the depth on another thread is crazy!

The corners are at times though a little shakey. They give up those 15+ flag routes from time to time but I mean the other team's gonna make plays so you gata excuse that.

Here is where we stand nationally from a defensive standpoint after yesterday:

Rushing defense: 12th (89 yards per game)

Passing D: 30th

Total D: 11th (271 YPG)

Scoring D: 7th (12 PPG)

Interceptions: 4th (10 INTs)

Sacks: 12th (18 total)

Not bad, especially with some lay-ups coming up the next 3 weeks............:wink2:

Imagine where our stats would be if we got off the field more often on those third and longs and the fourth downs we gave up yesterday.....

Imagine how it would be if Navy didn't score 2 80+ yard drives and on a 85 yard pass....
Imagine how it would be if USC didn't go 90 and kicked a FG instead of going for 6 on 4th and G
Imagine how it would be if Indiana didn't get that late 6

or if Pryor didn't thow the pick to St. Jean....

:wink2:

Amazing DL. I think this defense is on par with 02 and 05, maybe even better up front than those(crazy depth). Over all I believe this defense will give us a chance to win every football game. I am gonna miss those DL seniors next year. Linebackers are solid, wow what if we had Moeller. Secondary is solid also. We have a very strong unit and it is good to see the younger DL getting reps, we will need them next year. Kudos to this defense, powerful, strong, fast, relentless and having FUN doing it. Go Bucks

Considering the starting unit has given up a grand total of 13 points over the last four games, I'd say we're pretty much set.

As far as DL depth is concerned, it's off the charts. But, I'd like to see a few more young pups get some PT so we can have similar experienced depth next year. We've played as many as nine different guys on the DL in a game so far. Here are the DL players I've seen play so far this season:

Worthington *
Larimore
Gibson
Heyward
Denlinger *
Williams
Rose *
Wilson *
Thomas
Simon
Goebel
Newsome (ST only?)

* Seniors

Over the next few games, if we get out to a big lead I'd like to see a little more of Simon, Thomas, and Goebel. With a starting four of Gibson, Larimore, Heyward, and Williams next year we'll need a complete second four that has quality experience.
