The Columbus Dispatch : Golf: Memorial's changes include lower price
In deference to the economy and some golfers' grumbling, the 34th Memorial Tournament will be a throwback.

All-tournament badges, $170 apiece last year, will cost $155.
Morgan Stanley, a target of taxpayer ire after taking federal bailout money, has canceled tournament events it sponsored to entertain clients. As a result, the pro-am will be replaced by a Double Skins Game, which was last played in 1999.
Finally, the furrows in the sand bunkers that also furrowed pros' foreheads the past three years won't anymore. Their removal is among several alterations tournament host Jack Nicklaus decided to make after wind, rain and a tough setup resulted in the highest winning score in 23 years.
"Jack listened to the players, (made) his own assessment by watching how the players performed on television, went out on the golf course, took into consideration the weather, and talked to (superintendent Paul Latshaw) about putting a new plan in place for this year," tournament director Dan Sullivan said.
The Memorial will be played June 4-7 at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin.
Besides a scaled-back price, an all-tournament badge will come with a free practice-round ticket, which sells for $30.

...

i liked the furrowed bunkers and higher scores...

and for those of you wondering abotu fat phil...
Phil Mickelson, meanwhile, said this year that he won't play because he did not like how the course was set up last year. He mentioned specifically his inability to hold the 11th green with a wedge shot from out of the rough behind it. Mickelson's complaints about the setup echoed those of others.

Contrast this to an article in the same paper that Ohio colleges are only raising tuition 3% instead of 6% because of the bad economy.

Tiger to play Memorial, seeks win No. 2

After a three-week break, Tiger Woods will return to the PGA Tour at next week's Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, the event announced Friday.

Woods, 33, has played six tournaments since returning from knee surgery, with five consecutive top 10s and a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. He last competed on May 10 during the final round of the Players Championship, where he finished eighth. This will be his 10th appearance at the Memorial, where he has won three times --1999, 2000 and 2001. He missed last year's tournament due to knee surgery performed just after the Masters, then went on to win the U.S. Open two weeks later before ACL surgery knocked him out for the rest of the year.

I find watching Mickelson to be not much fun. He pastes this fake smile on his face (What? I hit it in the lake? Oh, ho! What a challenge I set myself now! What fun! Oh, gosh! OK. You can adore me!), but all the meanwhile he whinges and cries about everything. (Waah! Tiger won't lay down. Tiger came back! Waah! I was supposed to be #1 now! Muirfield is too tough. I couldn't shoot a 78 without these new generation clubs and balls. I won't be able to be five under par without a sweat. Darn that Jack Nicklaus. Waah!)

In stark contrast stands the comments of Ernie Els, a man who has dropped from #2 to #18 as he deals with the legacy of his knee surgery and coming to terms with his soon to be teenage son's autism. He has little chance of winning but no whinging, no excuses.

I love Muirfield Village; to be honest, I have done ever since I first starting coming here some 15 years ago. Jack does an incredible job with the set-up and the conditioning of this golf course. In my opinion it is by far the best course on the PGA Tour. Seriously, if any greenkeeper or committee wanted to know how to set-up a golf course, they should come to Muirfield Village for this tournament, because let me tell you this is the standard which every other golf course in the world should aim for.

Jack obviously has a world of experience as a golf course architect, but he?s also in the position of having been a great, great player and therefore he can see things through a professional player?s eyes, too. He wants the players to feel challenged by the course and, because he prides himself on quality, he also wants it to be in perfect shape. And this golf course is perfect in every way ? the greens, the fairways, the bunkers, the way the tees are mown; basically everything. It?s a joy to play.

I won this tournament in 2004, which is still one of the highlights of my career, and I feel good about my chances every time I tee it up here. I?ve been working extremely hard on my golf game and everything feels really good. I?m just looking for that little spark to get me going.

This is why Ernie Els, former #1 during Tiger's reign let's not forget, is a champion. The other guy? I know that lots of folks here think highly of him and I hope it will not be offensive if I say I do not. Had Ernie not torn his knee in that freak boating accident, Mickelson would not be #2.

Thanks, Ernie!

Eh, I won't be as kind. Phil "Moobs" Mickelson is being a whiny little bitch about it. Which isn't surprising to me one bit. He's always seemed like he was one good shove away from crying anyway.

Els is acting like a gentleman and a champion. This has nothing to do with the fact that he loves Muirfield.

Els has always been up there as far as my favorite golfers go...but with that comment, he goes a little higher up in my book.

What's a membership at Muirfield go for these days?

$125,000 initiation - $400 plus monthly? Greater than or less than Scioto?

I don't know the area, so its tough for me to guess.

invite only. handicap requirements to play during the day. closed early in the year for the tournament. nice course. not sure which one i consider the "best." muirfield, scarlet, scioto or the private course...

The Village has been impossible for years now. The country club (lesser course) has a more typical process.

IMHO, Village > > > Scioto
