2009 Heisman Trophy discussion

Every time I am reminded of exactly who the past winners are or find out who other voters are I get very sad.

After hearing Danielson quoting Gino F Torreta and seeing what that dumb [censored] from Tennessee said earlier this week I am fully prepared for a complete debacle tonight.

If it's anyone other than McCoy or Tebow I'll be shocked. Ingram will be the lesser of three evils.

Should be between Gerhart and Suh but neither plays QB or RB for a top 5 team and had a lot of exposure in previous years so they are automatically disqualified.

I don't think McCoy or Tebow have a chance. Projections are Ingram, Suh, and Gerhart with McCoy and Tebow filling out the bottom two.

I heard Danielson mention that Toretta said the voting was tied with about 40 minutes remaining before the e-mails were due.

What was said by a guy fronm Tennessee?

Jax is talking about the Knox News (Sentinel) writer quoted here:

Tebow apparently got at least one first-place vote from- surprise - someone who covers Tennessee: Mike Griffith of the Knoxville News-Sentinel.
"Tim Tebow was the best player in college football, carrying the Gators to an undefeated regular season in the toughest conference in the nation," Griffith said in a Scripps Howard story about the service's final poll.

I agree. Tebow at one point had stats comparible to Pryor (not saying pryor's bad), and McCoy did not show up in the B12 champ game. I think Ingram will win, unfortunately, but Gerhart should. Ingram never really came across as a dominating player. It just seemed like he was consistent and got a lot of 6-12 yd runs. Gerhart dominated, granted it was against the pac-10 defenses (which I don't think we can compare to the sec because no teams from either conference have played each other, or at least big teams, so there's no measuring stick). In the big games gerhart came to play. Ohio State (granted it was the beginning of the year) was one of the best running teams in the country and it could not rack up more than 90 yds running, but Gerhart put up over 170 and 3 tds. He also ate up oregon for over 200 yds and 3 scores. Both of these games were big and he was even bigger.

Leading the nation in rushing and TDs while carrying 21 credits at Stanford is "outstanding" in my book. My vote is for Gerhart.

By all accounts, this is the closest vote in years. Not sure who is going to win it, but Suh seems to have momentum. Gotta believe Ingram won some votes last Saturday, too.

From a purely selfish perspective, Archie is still the only two time winner. But with another sophomore winning it, there's a chance that may not last much longer.

Hard to believe this is Alabama's first ever Heisman winner.

Gerhart finished second, gotta believe the difference was Ingram's performance in the SEC championship.

To me, as long as Gerhart, Ingram or Suh won it I'm fine with the result.

Which I think is too bad, considering his backup was even more productive running the ball. Either Alabama has two heisman caliber backs who create their own holes, or their benefiting from huge advantages Gerhart does not. At least Suh & Gerhart made it interesting. Baby steps I suppose (the anti-underclassmen stupidity seems to be subsiding).

Ingram had a great season, I'm just not convinced he's even the 3rd best player there.

Mark Ingram (2009)
Yards - 1542
YPC - 6.2
Rush TD's - 15

Beanie Wells (2007)
Yards - 1609
YPC - 5.9
Rush TD's – 15

And Beanie did it on a bad ankle for much of the year. In terms of pure ability and importance to the offense, I think Beanie wins both of those categories too.

There’s also Larry Johson (PSU) who ran for over 2,000 yards, had 20 rushing TD's and averaged more than 8 YPC before the Heisman was awarded in 2002 – he finished 3rd.

I feel like Suh or Gerhart deserved it more than Ingram. But because 70% or so of the voters are from the east and Suh plays defense, neither of them ever really had a shot.

I think Ingram won it in part because Alabama's never had a Heisman winner before.

Congrats to him and Alabama
