2009 Depth Chart Discussion

It's no secret Ohio State gets a lot younger this season, and the team's youth is reflected in its spring depth chart, unveiled Friday.
Five sophomores and a freshman are listed as starters on offense. The defense is older but has only five seniors listed with the first team. Check out the full depth chart (page 10), but here are several items to note...

The linebacker and receiver depth charts are sure to spark a lot of discussion. To me, those groups will be in flux at least through the first 3 games. What's more interesting to me is the...

Starting OL

Adams
Boren
Brewster
Browning
Cordle

Shugarts is not listed because of injury. I would expect that he will push hard for one of the tackle spots this fall. That may be the only change we see from what they released today.

I could see Cordle moving inside if Shugarts can compete for the outside spot.

only five seniors? that seems like a decent number to me, I would bet there are a lot of schools out there that don't have five seniors projected to start on D

given the fact that we lost 31 players from last years squad I am satisfied with only five senior starters on D

edit: I just looked at the depth chart, there are 5 senior starters and the other 6 are juniors, way to dig deep there ESPN :roll2:

The real debate will be:

Browning/Shugarts

vs.

Cordle/Shugarts
I guess that depends on whether you like at the entire right side of the line or just one position. Cordle can play anywhere on the OL and I would consider him to be a better RT than Shugarts who could not play inside and Browning can play RG.

I'm just going from memory here, but I think one of our better defenses (in the Tressel era) "only" had 5 senior starters:

2002: Doss, Nickey, Wilhelm, Grant, Peterson

They did alright.

Must just be me, but I was a little surprised to see Moeller listed as the #1 SLB. You have to plug Spitler at #1 MLB due to his seniority (and his ability, not questioning that). I've always viewed Moeller and Hines as the "Star" position players, and assumed that Spits, Homan, and Sabino would get the majority of the plays this season at linebacker.

It's very early, things will change.

Also, I'm crossing my fingers that Andre Amos can stay healthy this season, the kid as ridiculous skills. Malcolm Jenkins was on local radio a few weeks back and mentioned that Amos is the clear leader at the other CB spot (opposite Chekwa), IF he can stay healthy....we shall see.

The writer says 5 sophs and a frosh on offense, but he doesn't list any freshmen.
Adams, Brewster, Pryor, Posey, Herron

Was there a Fr listed at FB? (Martin?)

Re: Moeller at LB instead of Star........ With all the spread teams we will face this year, the Mike won't get all the reps, so having Moeller out there at LB against spread teams, along with Hines at Star, would give us some pretty serious team speed against the spread, as well as great tacklers.
I would certainly think that Sabino will have to see the field a good amount this year, though.

Yes, Martin is listed at FB. Here's a link to the depth chart that was released in the media guide.

Ozone.Spring.Depth.Chart

There are contradictions to what JT talked about on Wednesday.

QB - Oltorik is playing baseball, so new walk-on Siems is the third QB during the spring

FB - JT said that Spencer Smith has been moved to TE, and that Adam Homan showed ability at FB (Adam's listed at MLB)
