Big 10 OOC games

I was looking at the OOC games (BCS or BCS caliber teams) in the Big 10 this year and there are quite a few interesting matchups that could certainly help change the perception...

Illinois - Missouri (@St. Louis), @ Cincinnati, Fresno State
Indiana - Virginia
Iowa - @ Iowa State, Arizona
Michigan - Notre Dame
Michigan State - @ Notre Dame
Minnesota - @ Syracuse, California
Northwestern - @ Syracuse
Ohio State - USC
Penn State - Syracuse
Purdue - @ Oregon, Notre Dame
Wisconsin - Fresno State, @ Hawaii

Illinois hands down has the most interesting matchups this year. Penn State, Minnesota, and Northwestern all play 'Cuse.

Week 1 Losers

I never had any luck picking winners, so in honor of Leonard Postero we pick the Losers. Enjoy!

Missouri at Illinois

Missouri begins life without Maclin and Daniel, 2 of the most dynamic players in school history are now playing on Sundays. The Illini have been good under Coach Ron Zook and rained on Ohio State?s parade a couple of years ago ending the Buckeyes home winning streak at 28. The Ilini believe they can challenge for the Big 10 title on a regular basis. The winner of this game should have momentum boost headed into conference play; the loser will have pressure to rebound quickly. One of the best non conference games in week 1.

Zanes Zero ? Illinois

Western Michigan at Michigan

So let me get this straight, one of the player?s parents contacted the NCAA because the Wolverines were supposedly exceeding the time limits the NCAA allows student athletes to spend on football. I bet he forgot to bring the juice boxes as well. The Coach plans on playing 3 quarterbacks in this game, there is saying in football if you have 2 quarterbacks you really have none. So I?m not sure what you have with 3. Having the right trigger man for his offense will settle natives as well as his critics. Do the Wolverines have quarterback on the roster capable of executing Coach Rodriguez?s system?

I think the answer is no.

Zanes Zero ? Michigan

Navy at Ohio State

The sweater vest genius leads his nutty bunch against the sailors from Navy. Going to Columbus while on shore leave is not a recipe for some quality r & r. Terrelle Pryor enters his sophomore season with some valuable experience from last year. If the Buckeyes look ahead to USC they might get thrown into the brig. However I think General Tressel will have his troops ready.

Zanes Zero ? Navy

Akron at Penn State

Coach Paterno has coached so long he may have coached against the Incas in some sort of tribal rugby game. He was considered a great old coach 30 years ago. Last year was nice to see, as the Nittany Lions played extremely well for Joe Pa. The 2009 version should be more of the same as they will challenge Ohio State for the Big 10 title.
Zanes Zero ? Akron

Northern Iowa at Iowa

Will not miss Shoone Greene in this one.

Zanes Zero ? Northern Iowa

Eastern Kentucky at Indiana

Hosier Daddy

Zanes Zero ? Eastern Kentucky

Montana State at Michigan State

One of theses teams is flying under the Big 10 radar.

Zanes Zero ? Montana State

Toledo at Purdue

Boilermakers, awesome.

Zanes Zero ? Purdue

Miami Oh at Northwestern

Northwestern is a fine institute for higher learning

Zane Zero ? Miami Oh

Minnesota at Syracuse

Hey didn?t you play point guard for Coach K?

Zanes Zero ? Orangemen

Northern Illinois at Wisconsin

From the movie Stripes, ?Come on it?s Czechoslovakia, it?s liking going into Wisconsin. Well I got the crap kicked out of me in Wisconsin once. Forget it!?
Zanes Zero ? Northern Illinois

Thurs, Sept. 3

Indiana 19, Eastern Kentucky 13 - Hoosiers squeak by the (FCS) Colonels at home by only 6 points. Could be a bad year once again for the Hoosiers but they did get good production out of their WR's Demarlo Belcher (6 rec, 97 yards, TD) and Tandon Doss (8 rec, 125 yds). Hoosier QB Ben Chappell was making his debut and threw for 326 yards and a TD but had 2 INT's.

Sat, Sept. 7

tOSU 31, Navy 27 - You already know everything about this game

Michigan St. 44, Montana St. 3
- Spartans roll in first game...new QBs Kirk Cousins and Keith Nichol combine to throw 5 TDs. WR Blair White has huge game (9 rec, 162 yds, 2 TD).

Purdue 52, Toledo 31 - In Danny Hope's coaching debut the Boilers had no problem putting up points on the Rockets but the defense needs some work. Boilers rookie RB Ralph Bolden had a huge first game rushing for 234 yds and 2 TDs. Fellow RB Jaycen Taylor had a strong game (81 yards, 2 TDs) in his first game back after last year's season ending injury. Senior QB Joey Elliott, also making his debut as a starter, threw for 3 TDs but also threw 3 INT's. Talented Toledo QB Aaron Opelt has an NFL arm and was the main reason the Boiler D had trouble containing the Rockets offense, as he went 41-67 for 423 yds and threw for 3 TDs. Purdue K Carson Wiggs kicked a 59 yard field goal before the half to set a school record.

Penn St. 31, Akron 7 - Penn State easily takes care of a tough Akron team. They got up 31-0 at half and seemingly took their foot off the gas for the rest of the game. PSU QB Daryll Clark threw for 353 and 2 TDs. Evan Royster ran for 61 yards and a TD. PSU WR Derek Moye had 138 yds receving and a TD.

Michigan 31, Western Michigan 7 - Michigan got off to a good start this year in the face of distraction. New QB Tate Forcier had a good first outing throwing for 179 and 3 TDs. WR Junior Hemingway had 103 yds receiving and 2 TDs.

Minnesota 23, Syracuse 20 - Minnesota spoiled Greg Paulus' debut as Syracuse quarterback. Minny kicked the game winning field goal in overtime to escape the Carrier Dome. WR Eric Decker had a big game for the Gophers (9 rec 183 yds) and returning QB Adam Weber threw for 248 and a TD.

Iowa 17, Northern Iowa 16 - 22nd ranked Iowa definitely did not look like a ranked team in a near loss at home to unranked Northern Iowa. Iowa blocked 2 FG attempts in the final seconds to preserve the victory. QB Ricky Stanzi threw for 242 yds and a TD. WR Tony Moeaki had 83 yds receiving and a TD.

Missouri 37, Illinois 9 - Missouri spanked an Illinois team that had high expectations this year in the Edward Jones Dome in Saint Louis. Missouri ran out to a 30-3 lead and never looked back. QB Juice Williams had a game to forget throwing for only 179 yards and an interception. Meanwhile Missouri QB Blaine Gabbert had a game to remember throwing for 319 yards and 3 TDs and no interceptions.

Wisconsin 28, Northern Ill. 20 - Wisconsin survived a late NIU rally to win at home. NIU scored 14 points in the 4th Quarter to make the game interesting. New Wisky QB Scott Tolzien threw for 257 yds, 1 TD and 2 INT. Wisky got a good game from RB John Clay who ran for 43 yards and 2 TDs.

Northwestern 47, Towson 14 - Northwestern dominated Towson at home from start to finish. QB Mike Kafka threw for 192 yds with no TDs or INTs. The running game did most of the damage as RBs Fields and Concannon each had 2 TDs. WR Anthony Brewer had 6 rec for 145 yds and a TD.

Whew that was tiring, from here on out think I will just do the scores. :)

I had thought that Oregon was going to demolish Purdue this year, but after the debacle in Boise... I'm not so certain. Oregon's running game is going to be hurting, and who knows when Masoli will hit an open receiver. Needless to say, the turnover on the Oregon D could allow for some possibilities for this renewed Purdue team.

I watched the replay of Illinois and Missouri...Illinois has a horrible back 7 on defense. My goodness...teams with good QB's and WR's are gonna eat these guys alive. Benn went down with an injury to his back...Have no clue how bad it was but he didn't return after leaving in the 1st.

Overall a bad day for the Big Ten.

Obviously the loss in Columbus last night was disappointing but the game was much closer than many expected and may have helped our perception. We lost because USC had huge hairy sack. When it came to the end, do or die, USC was able to take it away from us. We folded like poker tables. Pryor is definitely not ready for prime time. He showed that he still has lots to learn about the funadmentals of football let alone being a big time college QB. Had USC had the field position that we had in the second half we'd have lost this game by 28 points IMHO. The D did us proud though they were just too worn at the end. It's too bad our O put them in that position.

It hurts to say this but congratulations to Michigan. I know it's only Notre Dame but many are prediciting the BCS for them this year. The Wolverines showed the sack that it takes to win the big game. They may not have our talent yet but Rich Rod has made them grow a pair. One of my greatest fears about our Buckeyes is that being around JT has caused shrinkage in the sack region. A team is a reflection of their head coach and I find it hard to believe that anyone who wears a sweater vest has anything more than steamed clams swinging around below the belt. I'm very worried about November 21st.

MSU, you may be excused from the Big Ten. Enough said.

Wisconsin, Northwestern and Indiana should hang their heads in shame for their play Saturday. Those game were way too close. If that's how they compete against the bottom of the FBS what are they going to do against the top half? Minnesota took care of a good Air Force team but the true test will come against Cal. If they can knock off Cal and Iowa takes care of Arizona we'll have some redemption for this weeks humiliations. If MSU takes care of Notre Dame and Northwestern escapes Syracuse it'll have been a great week. That's assuming no one chokes against a Toledo, Akron or Wofford.

Purdue had a golden opportunity to knock off an Oregon team that's in dissarray but Oregon did just enough to escape with the win. Purdue will be a tough out this year and I think this close loss on the road will be a confidence builder.

Iowa, PSU and Illinois did what were expected of them so congratualtions to them. The Illini still have lots of work to do to make up for the clownstomping they took at the hands of a Missouri team that barely managed to slip by Bowling Green. I hpe they enjoyed it last night because I foresee a three game losing streak in their very immediate future. In fact I can see them at 1-8 going into the game against Northwestern at home. A 2-10 finish is very possibly for them.
