Jenkins in a strong #1 for the 2002 squad, and Gamble is a nice complement but 2008 depth is unmatched, especially with the spread offense becoming a more frequently used set

The '08 depth has the following returning
Robo
Hartline
Small
Satzenbacher
T-wash
D. Torrence

stir in...
Posey
Stoneburner
Lamar Thomas

that depth can't be touched by the '02 squad

Bolded all the guys who have played little or not at all. Again, I supressing the urge to scream when people start giving the nod to guys who have never seen the field. Hell for that matter how much have we ever seen from Small?

Also, if your going with just names on a roster the '02 team had some guy named Santonio Holmes who redshirted that year iirc.

Its Robo, Hartline and a bunch of hyped recruits vs the all time leading WR in OSU history, Vance and two ther guys still playing in the NFL. Vance was more than solid in his brief OSU career, he was every bit the player Hartline is.

Big edge 2002.

As of now, yes...

But right now, we have to judge based on 2007 results. If somebody steps us and surprises us big-time this year, then it is possible for the '08 guys to step up to the '07 level. But until I see the Hartline's reported improvement myself, and until I see which of the young guys steps up (and to what level); I'm witholding judgement.

I agree and it will be interesting to see just how this all turns out after this season. One of us just might remember this thread and hack it back up again for consideration.
Also right now , while I might think Sanz will be the #3 receiver I can't say for sure who will be. One of the new guys just might step up.

I'm voting for 02, based mostly on Jenkins as the clear #1 WR in both groups. The guy set the school record for career yards with Steve Freakin Bellisari and Krenzel throwing. Imagine what he would have done with Smith and Boeckman. 08 has better depth on paper, but no one under Robo and Hartline have proven much. If we're going to include Sanz, TWash, Posey, Thomas, and Stoney on 08, you hve to include Holmes and Roy Hall (and Childress) on 02. I'd be happy with either, but Jenkins was something really special.

Neither Small or Sanz has proven his worth at the wr position where the 2002 crew have , at least three of the 4 are have been in the NFL.

Gamble is in the NFL but at another position,

Drew Carter produced very little in '02 (10/147 0td)...but agreed without injuries he is afield stretching wr

Gamble had 0 TD catch in '02? (more sizzle than steak as a WR 31/499 0td )...hartline has produced far more than Gamble

and Vance produced little as well in '02 13/178 3 td

part of lack of production due to the QB not talent, but i don't think it is fair to say the '08 guys haven't proven anything, when the top 4 have generated an equal amount of productivity, and we have much more depth to speak of

This team hasn't shown a Holmes or Jenkins quite yet - but the depth is just so kick ass I believe one could emerge this season. Posey and Stonebrunner are very intriguing.

Starters only I give the edge to 2002 - but overall it is 2008 by a whisker.

Holmes redshirted in '02.

Jenkins > Robiskie
Gamble > Hartline
Vance push Small

Gamble played both ways in 2002 plus special teams, he didn't get near as many offensive plays as Hartline did. He had a higher YPC and was within 200 yds of Hartline on 20 or so less catches. Also much like in the CK argument, look at what Gamble did on the biggest stage. He had the longest offensive play for either team in the Fiesta Bowl, I just don't see that kind of game breaking athleticisim out of Hartline.

Its completely fair to say anyone after those three for the '08 team haven't done anything yet because, well, they haven't. Again, Santonio Holmes was in the depth of that '02 class but it was so stacked he redshirted. Think how good a team's depth has to be for that to happen.

Hopefully the next great WR at OSU emerges this year but as for right now I'd take that 2002 starting 3 over the starting 3 in 2008.
