Lots of folks filling up champagne glasses in expectation...

I wonder where he'd be used first. Both OL & DL are needs moving forward, but DE is much thinner.
If he comes to Michigan, and RR is even the tiniest bit sentient, let alone intelligent, he'll be a DE. OL has its share of players, even if most of them are true/redshirt freshmen. I'm pretty sure we'll have a DE or two in this class, whether it's LaLota, Roh, Hill, or whoever, but if not, then you're talking about having to a position switch just to fill the depth chart.

Top '08 OLB Marcus Witherspoon lands with Rutgers
Marcus Witherspoon, who originally signed with Michigan this past February, is now ready to suit up for the Scarlet Knights, the Press of Atlantic City reports.
Witherspoon left Ann Arbor, Mich. after it appeared he wouldn't qualify but took an online course and became eligible. After returning to Michigan, Witherspoon was still not allowed to play for the Wolverines.
He said of the situation, "I wouldn't have it happen any other way. I'd rather be somewhere where everything is going to go well."
"It was hard. But I have no hard feelings toward Michigan. We just decided to move on."
"I'm blessed. They (Rutgers) won't regret it. I'm so happy," Witherspoon concluded.

Anthony LaLota picks Wolverines over PSU, Irish, Virginia, BC
Rated the No. 13 defensive end in Class 2009, Anthony LaLota of The Hun School (Princeton, N.J.) has pledged to the Michigan Wolverines and coach Rich Rodriguez.
LaLota, a 6-foot-6, 260-pound standout, also considered offers from Penn State, Notre Dame, Virginia, Boston College, Florida and Rutgers.

ESPN's Craig Haubert said of the news, "As Notre Dame and Michigan prepare to face to off, a coveted recruit for both made his decision. Irish fans are hoping their battle on the field today against the Wolverines goes better then this one on the recruiting trail did."
"Athletic prospect LaLota had been viewed by many as being a good possibility for the Irish, but yesterday he made his announcement and committed to Michigan. The New Jersey native is an interesting story. A high school basketball player, he took football up as a junior and quickly drew interest. The nation's No. 13-rated defensive end is a talented kid with very nice upside. He could also be considered as an offensive tackle prospect, but needs to improve as a run blocker and will likely be a defender for Michigan."
"Still a bit raw, Michigan landed a player with a good feel for the game that could really develop into a productive player for them. He has good size and runs well. With LaLota Michigan adds some needed youth to their end position and gets a player with promising upside they can mold."

He recorded 40 tackles, 10 sacks and one pass breakup during his junior season.

U-M coach unsure whether Carson Butler faces penalty or not

September 15, 2008

Butler was ejected from the Notre Dame game after throwing a punch late in the fourth quarter.

"You couldn't see it on film and I didn't see it on the field," Rodriguez said. "We're getting an interpretation what he was ejected for. If you're ejected for fighting, I believe you're out for the first half of the next game. If you're ejected for a flagrant foul, there's not a penalty for the next game. It did not have it on the officials' report. We're looking into that and will react accordingly."

Rodriguez later said he was "not overly concerned with it."
Everyone and their mother saw it live on TV. Do they not have that film?
"He shouldn't have done it, it was a lack of poise," Rodriguez said. "He apologized, we'll move on and if he doesn't play in the first half of next game, we've got other guys to do it."

• On his postgame comment that "Michigan will be back: "What I mean is this program has had a lot of success playing error-free football, playing tough physical and not beating yourselves. And those are things you can do immediately. That doesn't mean automatically you're going to win championships like we're accustomed to like in the past here, but those are things we can get corrected."

• On the muffed kickoffs: "Every day we'll practice, until the day they graduate, to catch kicks. If that doesn't solve it we'll keep rotating guys to catch kicks."

Rich Rod's 'nightmare' is bliss for Weis

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Before he even got to the microphone, it was easy to tell Rich Rodriguez was upset.

"Are you kidding me?" he sneered, as he walked into the news conference room in the bowels of Notre Dame Stadium.

His team had just lost, 35-17. Worse, it had turned over the ball six times. And most of those were unforced.

"I'll tell you the stat that matters," he mumbled in disgust as he neared the podium.

For the next five minutes, Rodriguez answered questions about his team's sloppy performance Saturday. He used words like "nightmare" and "disappointed." He dropped phrases like, "Michigan football will be back."

That last phrase, in particular, was curious. It was unclear what he meant. After all, he is only 1-2. And he has been in charge of the program for less than a year. If anything, he was speaking about a somewhat difficult transition to Ann Arbor.
"All the naysayers out there?" he asked, somewhat rhetorically. "Whatever."

He paused.

Then continued.

"I'm disappointed. But I'm not discouraged."

And then he said it again: "Michigan football will be back. Hopefully sooner rather than later."

There was a rawness to Rodriguez's postgame news conference. It was a scene familiar to those who follow another tradition-rich program trying to find itself.

Last year, Notre Dame endured a 3-9 season. The team's coach, Charlie Weis, spent many Saturdays trying to fend off an avalanche of criticism for a tanking program.

This Saturday, he was beaming, despite the fact that he arrived in the news conference room using crutches. During the second quarter on a punt play, a U-M player ran into a Notre Dame player, who fell into Weis.

An interesting look at RR's first recruiting class so far. Yes, I know it's very early to analyze this class, but even though RR recruiting for "his system", a lot of them haven't contributed anything.

Of the Ohio recruits:

RB Michael Shaw: 4 carries
LT Patrick Omameh: May play, although RR would want to redshirt
WR Roy Roundtree: Has not played yet. Probable redshirt
TE Kevin Koger: On depth chart every week, has not played yet. Probable redshirt.
TE Brandon Moore: Probable redshirt.
OT Elliot Mealer: Injured, will redshirt.
LB Taylor Hill: Left team, wants to transfer closer to home. NOTE: Youngstown to Ann Arbor is only 240 miles...

Three games in is a little early to rip on a class for not contributing anything, especially when you look at what they've actually done. Couldn't you say the same about OSU's freshmen? Feel free to set me straight if I missed any, but the only freshmen I've noticed so far are Pryor, Posey, and Sabino. In any case I'm sure we've used more freshmen than you guys have. McGuffie's already the starting RB, Odoms leads the team in catches, Cissoko is the dime back and kick returner, Shaw would have more carries if he hadn't tweaked his ankle (I think it was his ankle) against Miami, Stonum has seen lots of action, Martin is part of the two-deep on the line, Fitzgerald plays special teams and backs up Ezeh. We're getting more freshman contribution than most teams in the country.

I agree that it is early to talk about freshmen contributions, but for the record we have played at least 7 frosh to date including THREE OL one of who could be starting Saturday.
