Offensive line for UM took big hit
Just 1 starter back for opener at Utah

By JOE VARDON
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

ANN ARBOR ? You might say Michigan's offensive line has been down on its luck lately.

No?

Well, one of its starters didn't just transfer, but went to Ohio State, no less.

Additionally, two possible starters with a year of eligibility left decided not to return, and another key player could miss the entire season with a knee injury.

So, 'unlucky' is one way to put it.

'It's definitely been hard,' said Wolverines left tackle Mark Ortmann, a redshirt junior expected to be in UM's starting lineup when the season opens Saturday against Utah.

The most dramatic event of UM's offseason ? at least as far as its offensive line was concerned ? was the abrupt departure during spring practice and eventual transfer to Ohio State by junior Justin Boren, who cited eroding 'family values' on his way out.

I'd be more suprised if Michigan beat Utah than Vice Varsa. Losing 9 OL on your two deep OL to graduation, transfer, or injury is not good news for Michigan.

People keep forgetting that Utah faces many variations of the spread offense every season. Their defense is built to stop those kind of offense.

Michigan will turn the ball ovber 3-4 times and will have many offensive penalties.

Their D-line is strong but has no depth. They have a secondary that should scare noone!!! Trent, Harrison, and Brown...are you freakin kidding me. Warren is the only DB they have worth anything. Cissoko has been getting ran over in practice.

The first few games for Michigan are gonna be rough.

Rodriguez mum on starting QB, RB

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez is only days away from his Wolverines debut, but the team's depth chart remains murky.
Seven positions on the offensive depth chart did not have starters listed Monday, including quarterback and tailback -- the highest-profile positions in the new coach's spread option system.
Rodriguez, hired last year to replace the retired Lloyd Carr, said he had a "gut feeling" about who'll start under center Saturday afternoon against visiting Utah, but wasn't naming names.
Junior Nick Sheridan played briefly in two games last season and redshirt freshman Steven Threet, a transfer from Georgia Tech, who has yet to throw a collegiate pass, are battling for the starting job. Rodriguez said both players likely will see time against the Utes.
"I would think that both of them have gotten to the point where we feel confident we can win with both of them," he said.

Everybody knows about the QB situation, and the uncertainty at RB isn't a big issue because there is talent there, but the OL would have me majorly concerned...

I think UM's win total in RR's first year will be similar to Jim Tressel's with OSU, 7-5. The question is, can he win 33 games in the 3 years that follow like Tressel? I don't see any reason why he can't. Having to play so many freshmen this year out of necessity should pay dividends in the years that follow. RR's recruiting this year given the circumstances were rather remarkable and his recruiting class for 2009 looks promising as well. Going forward, to build the type of program Tressel has RR has to win one of the next two matches with OSU with inferior talent and needs to out recruit OSU for 2010.

If your QB's continue to progress the way they are you will be starting over offensively with a true frosh QB in 09..

Really? Have you bothered taking a look at the depth chart? The lines are a mess, there isn't a QB to build around, and I don't see a ton of quality depth in the back seven.
Nor the DL, particularly ends. If they're hit with injuries there, look out below...
