2008 tOSU WR discussion (official thread)

I never really was Dane's biggest fan.. and honestly I rooted against him winning the 3rd WR slot since he got here.

But from the impressions of camp and the hard work he's put in in addition to his skills, he's more than earned it and he's earned a ton of respect and admiration from me.

im not trying to be a prick or anything but how can you "root" against a current player?

im honestly asking and not trying to start anything because i respect you as a poster and a buckeye fan.

Well it was moreso me wanting to see Posey play because honestly I believe Posey is the most talented WR on the roster right now.

I see said the blind man. Like I said I was just curious and I am right there with you in regards to Posey.

Posey is like Pryor. He's full of talent and raw in his ability. No doubt he will contribute. Don't think for a minute that Dane will take that laying down. He gets better because others on this team challenge him. They all get better. I saw video of Posey over the weekend and he seemed to have some good moves, but the gains I saw were short and he was easily stopped. Maybe it wasn't his best video. I'll reserve further comment until I can see him in Scralet and Gray.

The comments from Jenkins (an all American corner) say a lot about Dane's ability right now. That's only going to get better.

Freshmen enhance deep receiving corps

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
http://www.dispatch.com/live/content/buckeyextra/osufbquiz.html DeVier Posey had heard a lot about Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline, and watched them play a few times. But this summer, as he practiced with the two starting Ohio State receivers for the first time, he gained a better appreciation.

"Those two are professionals; they are NFL receivers," Posey said. "You can really tell that those two know what they're doing, with the way they carry themselves, and the way they are in meetings -- just the whole swagger about them.
"They are professionals, and that's how I want to be one day."
Posey and Lamaar Thomas were two of the higher-rated receiver prospects in the country when the Buckeyes signed them in February. But that meant little, Thomas said, once the college gang gathered.

CFN's unit rankings.

cfn

1. Florida
2. Missouri
4. LSU
5. Texas Tech
7. tOSU
8. Penn St.
13. USC
24. Illinois
37. Wiscy
42. TSUN

1. Florida
From the speed and quickness of Percy Harvin and Deonte Thompson, to the potential of Carl Moore and Riley Cooper, to the steady production of Louis Murphy, to the talented Aaron Hernandez, this group has it all. If everyone can stay healthy, which isn't a given after already losing top tight end Cornelius Ingram, this will be a devastating corps of playmakers. There are too many weapons to cover.

7. Ohio StateThe receiving corps came through as well as could be hoped for after losing Ted Ginn and Anthony Gonzalez with Robiskie and Hartline growing into a nice combination. There's plenty of experience returning with promising backups who got their feet wet last year, and two excellent tight ends in Rory Nicol and Jake Ballard an unappreciated twosome who should be used more in the passing game. This group will be held in check by the top secondaries, but there aren't a lot of them in the Big Ten. It's nitpicking, but there will be a problem is there's a rash of injuries. There's plenty of promise behind Brian Robiskie and Brian Hartline, but Dane Sanzenbacher and Taurian Washington haven't had to do it yet in a full-time role, while Small can't seem to put it all together.

Buckeyes Ready To Go Five Wide...............Interview with Coach Hazell. Coach feels they are seven deep and when they go five wide........Robiskie, Hartline, Small, Sanzenbacher and take your pick, Washington/Posey/Thomas.

I wonder what happened to Schwartz? Reports were that he was stepping up. That's too bad if he never finds his spot at OSU...watched his highlight films from HS and he looks like a heck of athlete...just too many guys in front of him I guess.

It might have been mentioned before, but it seems the good reports we read about Schwartz were all from Kurt Coleman. Probably trying to get his friend some pub.

Rivals.com College Football - Fatal flaws: Even the best teams have holes

Rivals screws up again. I hardly think a unit with a legit 1st round prospect(Robo), a great slot receiver(Hartline), and a slew of other promising young prospects(Small, Sanzo, Posey, Washington, Thomas, Schwartz, and Stoney) is our weakest link. Anyone who even remotely followed tOSU football would know our FB's and return game are our weakest units. Gotta' love the " In fact, they would be No. 3 or even No. 4 guys on some teams." comment. Our track record at WR speaks for itself. If you're a starting receiver at tOSU, you're special.

3. Ohio State: Wide receivers
Brian Robiskie, Brian Hartline and Ray Small - Ohio State's three leading wide receivers - return this season. They combined for 19 touchdown receptions last season. Still, they are the offensive weak link. Robiskie had 55 catches for 11 TDs last season; Hartline had 52 and six. But if you watched the BCS Championship Game, LSU's defense was not scared that either could get deep. LSU used a lot of press coverage and let its corners deal with Robiskie and Hartline one-on-one. Hartline (6-2/186) and Robiskie (6-3/199) have good size, but they lack elite speed and wouldn't be go-to guys on most of the nation's other top teams. In fact, they would be No. 3 or even No. 4 guys on some teams.

In 2006, Robo, as a soph, was third among OSU WRs in receptions, yards, and TDs; and had the same ypc as Ginn. I think the thing that the rivals analysts forgot to mention was that LSU's 1 on 1 "press" coverage often hovered between "illegal contact", "pass interference", and "felonious assault". Plus, LSU's pass rush was the best college football has seen in the past few years. Robo might be #2 on several teams, but if there's a team with a better #3, I'd like to know who that is.
