2008 tOSU WR discussion (official thread)

Dispatch

Receivers stepping up

Jenkins and fellow cornerback Donald Washington said sophomore receivers Dane Sanzenbacher, who averaged about a catch per game last season, and Taurian Washington, who played sparingly, are having strong springs.
The team's leading pass catcher last season, Brian Robiskie, has been hampered by an undisclosed injury.

Haven't heard any rumblings about Dane and Toro until now. Last year Dane emerged with Ray's injury. This could be a break out year for Dane and Taurian. I understand Taurian can really catch the deep ball well. Dane has great open field skills and has a knack for reading defenses. Hopefully he'll prove himself this year.

This new WR class gives the team more depth at that position, but there's no replacemnt for experience. We need Robo out there.

Intelligent route runner... = Gonzo??

Yep, Sanzo - he just needs the QB to see him and it's 6. Looking for some flashes of that unique ability this season. There was a reason he made the two deep last year and it wasn't simply by default. With a year of experience, gold pants, a Big Ten ring and a NC game under his belt, it's fair to say that Dane will make an impact this season. The competition this year is keen and Dane loves to compete.

Its just now that we have some serious depth & experience at WR I'd like to see more 4 and 5 wide formations myself. Robo, Hartline, Taurian, Dane and Smalls. Perhaps Saine in the occasional slot? mixed up with some of our fantastic recruits getting in some nice PT.

We've been blessed with a multitude of talent, I just hope it gets to see the field.

I have a feeling that the recruits will see the field, but with the depth at RB it may be limited. As the running game becomes dominantly established and collectively (Boom, Zoom, Beanie, and MoW) rack up say 300 ypg, the WR sets with the recruits may appear. The first two games will give them a chance to air things out. Then we'd better get serious. USC will be a test for all that speed at WR and RB.

Here's a WR set for you - Dane, Small, Flash and Posey with Saine coming out of the backfield - youth, speed and smart talent.

All of the WRs racing down the field in stride and Beanie with the ball for a TD - Priceless

Healthy receivers in short supply for Buckeyes
Sanzenbacher makes most of heavier workload

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

A nicked ankle here, a twisted knee there, a slightly pulled hamstring -- it doesn't take much to turn a stockpile of receivers into the lineup in an infirmary. Just look at Ohio State's receivers this spring.
Going into the month, the Buckeyes knew their top returning receiver, senior Brian Robiskie, was going to be held out of major contact while he recuperates from arthroscopic knee surgery in February.
But as the first-team offense lined up yesterday, the three-receiver set featured Brian Hartline, the No. 2 receiver last season, Dane Sanzenbacher, a spot player as a freshman last season, and Grant Schwartz, a converted defensive back. Another option was running back Brandon Saine at slot receiver instead of Schwartz.
"Just like we have two or three receivers out right now, you never would have thought that by practice 11, we'd have the guys running with the (first team) that we do now," Hartline said. "Really, you just keep playing, get ready for the spring game, and compete."

Tale of two OSU Brians: Robiskie, Hartline are similar, but different

COLUMBUS (AP) - Around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, they're simply called "the Brians." A year ago Brian Hartline and Brian Robiskie accounted for 97 catches, more than 1,600 yards on receptions and 18 touchdowns as Ohio State's top two passing targets. Now they're back and preparing for another year of making big plays as the Buckeyes' bookend ends.
Both are All-Big Ten in academics, have good hands, are fast and are about the same height and weight. Other than that, however, they really don't have that much in common.
