2008 tOSU WR discussion (official thread)

Dane caught maybe ten passes, drop two or three. It's hard to be the big game player when the frequency of touches is limited. The QB found Robo and Hartline more often because they were the primary WRs's. Who writes this stuff? Washington did make a few good plays, and he may have the deep threat ability. I don't see him as a returner. Have we forgotten about Saine as a returner. Again, this is a roll of the dice when it comes to who plays over whom. Dane will be competing for his position in the two deep. He and Ray will be the #3 and 4 WRs but there's a ton of depth this year. Hartline and Rob will be one and two. The rest of them will be knocking on the door of opportunity and pushing the more seasoned players.

Who reads this stuff? Reading comprehension, my friend.

"Returners" refers to returning players, not kick returners.
He's saying that out of the returning players for '08, T Washington and R Small are the most likely to be the big play receivers. I would agree with him there.
It's time for Ray Small to play fast and aggressive and start to clear things out for the other guys.

I think the article you are referring to is from John Porentas as The Ozone. He's pretty good. Fair but with that hint of Buckeye love that makes people appreciate his work.

In regards to Dane, he seems to be technically very sound, has great work ethic and plays hard. Seems to run excellent routes and has excellent, but not overwhelming speed. Sounds a lot like Hartline, but smaller. Seems likely that Dane stays in the two-deep early in the season, but what actually happens between Small, Sanzo, TWash, Torrence, Posey, Thomas and Stoney is really hard to project if you start looking at things later in the season and all the kids progress.

Honestly, I wouldn't put it past Posey to jump into the No. 4 spot in the rotation at WR.

No knock on Dane or Taurian, that's just how talented I believe Posey is.

Well my reading comprehension understands this. Posey is talented, but Dane has a year on him and I'm pretty sure that he won't sit back and let him kick his ass this spring. Granted there will be heavy competition for the #4 spot, it only raises the bar for the rest of the WR's and makes us a better team. It's a good problem to have. I wonder if Posey and Dane remember the face off in the 2007 state track finals. IRRC, Dane beat him in the 400m prelims.

No one can predict what will happen, who would have known that Dane would advance last year. Posey will have the same chances as Stoney and Flash. If he does show his stuff and make it as the #4 WR, then he did it because he has more to offer. But, it would be a waste of some very talented WRs across the board. If I were Dane, I'd get my track shoes out and work hard in the spring. There are fresh legs hitting the field this year.

No knock to anyone here, it's great to see we have so much talent coming our way in the fall.

Why all the talk about the competition for #4?

I see Hartline and Robo as locks at the Split/Flank and everything else wide open with a pile of talented guys battling it out.

We're a bunch of hopeless football fanatics who can't wait for the season to start again.

You're right about the lock at the #1 and 2 spots, the rest will be "up for grabs" including the #3 spot, IMO.

i agree completely. i envision both posey and lamaar thomas getting some PT this season. the majority of lamaar's might come in the return game, but he would add a definite spark to the offense.

changing outlook

As someone told me when I first started posting here. "He's going to have to be a pretty special player to crack the line up as a freshman". I was talking about Dane Sanzenbacher as a potential WR in 2007. No one knew what he was about to transpire. This same comment applies to the incoming class of WR's. They'll be pushing hard, trying to impress, and hoping to show the coaches that something special. They are special or they wouldn't have committed to tOSU. So, these newbies will suit up, run gassers, run their routes, and be equal in the eyes of the coaches. No one has a lock on a position because he was a HS star or last year's go to guy. I'm not saying that there's going to be some major upset here, but only that no one should take a position for granted. They're all talented, but who can convince the coaches that 105,000 in the Horseshoe won't be disappointed when they take the field this year?

OK, so there's a shootout for the #3 and 4 WR positions, but to be fair let's say we open this up to all WR positions. Wouldn't you think that they all have their eyes on moving up a notch? This personal competition is what makes this football team the best damn team anywhere. They should welcome this competition, and anyone who thinks he's a lock better look over his shoulder now and then. It might be a football sailing in for a catch, or it could also be another scarlet and gray jersey trailing in his footsteps.

:oh:

Small better raise his game, or he'll lose his playing time. The competition will be very intense. And we need the #3 and #4 guys to be a threat.

He played as well as Hartline did as a RS Freshman. I agree that he could do more but becasue there's so much WR interaction, they've got to get him the ball more to prove this out. His speed will take over. IMO

If we play the game we played last year, Beanie and Saine will dominate the running game and the WR's will be a secondary weapon.

But they need to be a real threat, not an afterthought. Otherwise Beanie will face 8 and 9 in the box all year.
That's why that 3rd receiver needs to be a big play threat (liker Small is supposed to be) or "money" on 3rd downs like Gonzo was.

Our running game should be most dominant in the second half of games, as JT will surely mix it up alot in the first halves.
