Todd Boeckman - proving you always want to be the guy that follows the guy who follows the legend.

Or... I suppose you could just be Scott McMullen... Seems to me any number of fans thought he was far and away better than the guy who won 23 of his final 25 games at Ohio State.
I know I did.

I really think TB's INTs in the spring game are getting too much attention. The only truly bad decision I saw him make was the throw to Hartline on the slant that got picked. The deep ball was a good decision, but the defender made a great play. Could the ball have been thrown deeper? Probably. It's worth noting that Bauserman had a few underthrown deep passes of his own - perhaps the rain played a factor in that. What I did like was that TB was throwing the ball as he did at the beginning of last year: he wasn't just chucking it downfield to blanketed receivers. He made good use of the short game. Once he has the 1st string OL and WRs on the field, he should be even better. His decision making looks like it's better than it was at the end of last year; his accuracy isn't like Troy's, but he's certainly a worthy starter. Bauserman, Henton, and certainly Pryor will not push him out of a starting job unless some catastrophic happens (10 INTs in the first 2 games, or an injury). Chill out, he's our guy and he looks like he's gonna get the job done. I mean, I seem to recall halfway through last season he had better numbers than Troy in '06 (before TB seemingly regressed in terms of decision making halfway through the season). He'll be just fine.

Did everybody from BN make it over to this thread?

Hundreds upon hundreds of balls thrown in practice and we are evaluating who is the better QB based pretty much on two long balls each - in the frickin' rain?

Boeckman on a short leash? Boeckman will lose his job before the season is over - based on a scrimmage?

Did anyone notice the black jersey? Anybody notice that there was only one? That is about as clearly as JT can possibly say "This is my fucking quarterback."

In case you missed the entire Krenzel era the quarterback is the one who understands the offense and can read defenses. Neither the second year kid nor the third year kid will slip past the 5th/6th year kid based on his ability to throw the long ball almost imperceptibly (if at all) better.

The only reason the long ball was part of our offense as frequently as it was last season is because JT trusted Boeckman to throw it. If he loses that trust you will see a decrease in long balls well before you see a new quarterback. You may see more crossing patterns, screens, statue of libertys, (statue of liberties?), and fumbleruskies.

You will not see a RS Frosh push a healthy 5th/6th year quarterback to the sideline just so he can try to go deep against teams that have the knowledge and athletes to disguise their coverages.

Unless of course, you want to get his mistakes on game film so he can learn the sort of lessons Boeckman learned last year while throwing 299 passes in the best classroom available to any QB - an actual live game.

Maybe its just me, but this is in comment to our ground game with Boom and Zoom. I would like to see more delayed hand offs, especially out of 3 WR sets with these two. I think its a liable option especially with Saine; his speed coupled with the fact that he should actually have a couple holes open (or a shot to the edge) might bode well.

If not, having Saine as the tailback in the Pony then coming out of the backfield into the flat would be another excellent compliment to his abilities.

After this spring game, I don't think I've ever been more excited about our backfield.

Right now I have the video but it's in a file format that only seems to work on my Mac and not any of my Windows PC's. Trying to figure out what the deal is...

Appreciate it, rocketman. Good luck! Please make sure in a general way, please, to let us know, if you can. Thanks!

What I thought was worth noting was that TB went to Hartline seemingly 90% of the time.

I wonder what that means in terms of trusting receivers or receivers' ability to get open.

I interpreted that as TBs ability to quickly read the D and know if his primary was open.

I had the opposite problem with Henton who seemed unable to find open receivers.

Of course, I couldn't tell you if TBs receivers simply were more open or not - so my Henton assessment is likely unfair.

It looked like Henton's line was collapsing in on him in a blink. I would have also liked to see what he could do from the pocket, although I liked his motor when he got flushed out.

thoughts on Todd's performance in the Spring Game

1.) Two interceptions in two 11 minute halves projects out to six interceptions in 60 minutes. Not good.

2.) The USC game will come down to defense and Beanie. We can only hope that Beanie will run over USC's inexperienced defensive line. I am quite pleased that USC will only have one game before the USC/OSU game, whereas OSU will have 2 games.

3.) In TB's first interception in the Spring game, if Beanie had been in the game and running over people like he was at the end of last season, the safety would presumably have had to pay more attention to the play action and been unable to intercept.

4.) In Troy's last Spring game, Troy played only one series. JT was able to predict in advance that TB needed the practice.

5.) In the Dispatch, Todd said he was hoping to get better at check downs. The admission seems to be consistent with throwing too much to Hartline. Though highly tacky, I suppose there is some logic in having Hartline be option 1. Throwing mostly to Hartline is what happens if you never check down.

6.) There may be some reason for believing that Todd will never have to face a defense as good as the one he faced in spring practice.
