2008 tOSU Spring Game (4/19) & Practice Discussion

Final thoughts....

Boeckman has to improve with his decision making. I won't down him for the 1st INT, but the second one was definitely his fault. Bauserman looked great. His deep ball looks excellent and seems to make good decisions. Henton didn't have much time to make throws, but didn't see many problems when he did have time. Herron had a great game. His vision is amazing for such a young player and I can't wait to see what he brings to this team during the season. Saine had an off game, but I'm not worried. He's still a great player and will still see plenty of PT. Mo Wells didn't see much action, but had a great return on a kickoff. I didn't really expect him to see much PT, since he is a Senior and there is no need to risk injury. Hopefully we'll cut down on the penalties during the regular season. Too many false starts and also too many holding calls on big plays. I trust the coaches to nip that in the bud. Defense looked good for the most part. A few too many catchable deep balls for my liking, but I'm not worried.

Hopefully we'll have some news on some of the recruits shortly

Who stepped up?

Taurian Washington was outstanding today..

I thought Ray Small had a very good game.. he looks much stronger (physically) than he did last yr..

Bauserman was very impressive.. i was suprised how poised he was back there.. and he throws the best ball of any of the QBs..

On defense.. alot of the usual guys looked good.. Gibson stood out, Larimore had a couple sacks, Coleman played well..

The negatives:

Boeckman.. i thought he was awful.. he played like he did vs Illinois.. some solid moments, but wreckless with the ball.. and quick to vacate the pocket whenever a blitz was shown..

Kickoffs.. Mo Wells should never return kicks.. even when he actually had a chance to take off and have a huge return, he was just too slow to turn the corner..

Penalites..

Ballard dropping two balls..

Henton is strong as an ox and keeps plays alive.. but his passing game is pretty poor right now

Good post. TB looks good for the most part. Just can't get sloppy and throw picks. It's frustrating to watch him move the offense so well and then turn it over.

As far as Saine goes. We obviously saw nothing of the "special" plays put in to utilize him. He'll help us in the pony look but not so much in the I.

Herron is going to good! :)

Good point on Mo Wells. Seniors don't play much.

Defense looked pretty good in the first quarter when the starters were in there together.

One more thing...doesn Coleman like to hit or what? :) He was talking smack after hitting Nicol in the final quarter down two scores...dude is a football player.

Wish BTN would've scanned the stadium and showed TP and company.

I'm just thankful I got to enjoy some Buckeye football!

Post game thoughts by position:
QB: Bauserman looked outstanding. He makes great decisions, throws a great ball, and he moves well. He also has good pocket presence. Henton looked pretty poor imo. He showed a couple flashes here and there but he looks like our 3rd stringer right now. Boeckman looked alright but obviously he needs to quit throwing the INT's. He locks in on 1 WR and the defense isn't stupid...he can't go to Hartline every play and he needs to get others involved. He still looks a little ansy, but a replenished OL will help.
RB: Didn't see much at all here today. Boom, MoWells, and Saine hardly got a chance to carry the ball, with mostly the walk-ons getting the carries. Boom was solid though. KC Christian has always impressed me as well.
FB: Terry made a nice block and he is so physically imposing.
WR: Hartline was a terror out there today. Taurian Washington is a playmaker and is going to be a big factor for us this year...most impressive player today outside of Bauserman imo. Stoney has great size but other than the 1 catch, didn't hear from him. Ray Small is going to be a good player for us as long as he keeps a good head on his shoulders. He looked pretty good today. Not overly impressed with the WR's today but RoBo will help and the DB's did a great job.
TE: Not much to report...pretty silent other than 1 nice 1st down catch by Nicol.
OL: Browning was a bit shaky at first but was very impressive as the game wore on. Connor Smith was great in his run blocking. Didn't pay much attention to Cordle. Shugarts looked great today, even in his pass blocking which surprised me a bit. Of course OL is hard to judge when you are watching the game but I thought we did well for how injury plagued we were.
DE: Loved what I saw here. Lawrence Wilson is explosive for his size, Heyward did a decent job on the run but Browning handled him pretty well in the pass game. Thad Gibson is extremely quick and while he didn't have any sacks, he was pressuring the QB non-stop. Soloman Thomas looked pretty good pressuring the QB late in the game. The only thing is that we need to wrap up the QB better.
DT: Great stuff here too. For the most part, the middle was plugged up and held the RB's to almost nothing. The most encouraging thing I saw was the pressure applied to the QB. Larimore was especially impressive, Worthington had some flashes, Denlinger looked good, and even Abdallah got a sack. Very encouraged by our play here, though they didn't face any of our starters at guard.
LB: We are stacked. JL and Freeman are studs of course, but Homan looked the best today imo. Rolle is a missle off the edge, as is Moeller. I like Moeller and Rolle coming in on third down, with Homan in on 1st and 2nd. Spitler also was in a ton of plays and is very solid. Sabino made some nice plays and showed you he has the skills. Sweat also almost came up with a big INT.
DB: Amos was the most impressive today to me. Very physical, tight coverage, and carries some swagger. Coleman looked awesome and what an INT! Chekwa is physical but I saw him get beat a few times. Lane looked pretty good today to. Gant rocked Boom on the first play of the game and Patterson shut down the fade well. I think collectively we looked awesome, as the WR's couldn't get open. Oliver was pretty solid as well...great tackler but needs to improve on downfield coverage.
P: Thoma is alright but he's no Groom.
K: Pettrey hit a nice FG.

The thing I liked most today was everyone seemed to make a play; from the starters to the walk-on's.

My impressions:

Browning- More than held his own against Heyward.

Small- Looked more explosive and aggressive than last year.

Herron- I agree with the Pittman comparisons. Doesn't have the same straightline speed but may be a little better in traffic.

Shugarts- Limitless potential. He looked huge, even standing next to Boone.

Sabino- Playmaker. Next star in line at LB U.

Sweat- Has a knack for the ball. He and Sabino seem to have really good chemistry. Maybe the next Laurinaitis and Freeman?

Gibson- Very fast. Could use a little refining but he'll make a splash this year.

Oliver- Made some nice tackles. Reminds me a lot of Anderson Russell.

Boeckman- Very up and down day. He has to make quicker decisions.

Bauserman- Not the deep ball passer Todd is but maybe better in the intermediate game. Pretty good pocket awareness and escaped quite a few sacks.

Henton- Impossible to sack but he needs to continue scanning the field after he makes the defenders miss.

Saine- Not his best performance.

Sanzenbacher- No huge plays but I am probably his second biggest fan right after UTgrad73.

Washington- Did a great job at getting behind the safeties. Our WR corps are going to be one of the top 3 in the nation, hands down.

Hartline- If there weren't so many seniors on this team, he'd be a captain. Always chatting with his teammates and coaches. Did I mention he's a pretty good player too?

Terry- Rey Maualuga beware: Terry and Beanie are going to run you over.

Andy Miller- He looks like he'll be able to provide solid depth. If he didn't have the best OT from Ohio since Orlando Pace coming in behind him, he may have grown into a starter one day.

Denlinger- He's in excellent shape. Big but very muscular. Held his own in the trenches.

Worthington- Almost got a safety. Didn't notice him a whole lot other than that.

Homan- Seriously, it's almost unfair to have this many top notch LB's.

Is it August 30th yet? :oh:

Pretty much the same observations as others: Hartline and Small both looked good, as did Herron and Browning was solid. Boeckman and Bauserman made good decisions, but it seemed to me that both threw some pretty ugly passes from time to time. Bauserman had a couple nice long passes, and they were completed, but they weren't thrown very well. They were behind receivers who had run past defenders and needed to be led more. Nothing inherently wrong with their choice of throws, just want to see better throws.

Herron had decent vision; I'm interested to see his statline and YPC. Saine didn't seem to have much running room, but that might be more a function of the offensive line talent being dispersed over two teams. The scarlet defensive line looked pretty solid. I think it was some combination of Worthington, Abdallah, Larimore, Heyward, and Gibson - they were getting lots of pressure and played the run very well. Hopefully they can get a little more production from the tackles this year. Coleman and Chekwa looked OK too. Coleman was pretty jacked up to play, by all appearances.

Ballard didn't impress me very much, and I've been a guy who's been high on him for a while. I think I'm putting too much weight on that dropped fake punt; he was pretty open. Hopefully not a harbinger of things to come, because he and Nicol could be huge play action assets.

Just to piggyback some stuff..

Ray really impressed me.. and i hope he keeps #82.. it looked good on him..

Washington.. thank god we have another WR stepping up.. kid came out of HS and the word was that he was a fantastic deep route runner.. i think he showed that today..

I agree about Oliver and Amos.. they both gave up a big play over the top... but Amos hits very hard and is quick.. and Nate Oliver made some nice plays near the LOS..

Props to Browning for handling Heyward.. u didnt hear much from him all game.. Gibson did school Browning though on that play where he should have sacked Henton..

I thought Thad was the most disruptive lineman out there.. i also think the DTs did a good job in the second half..

Couple more negatives:

1) We need serious work on our reverses... isnt the point of the reverese, to deceive the defense to think you're goin one way, and then reverese the field with a WR, who tries to get the edge and go?

Our reverses (and this includes last yr) take forever to develop.. and by the time the WR has the ball, there is 1-2 two guys waiting in the backfield for him, and he always has to cut it back in between the tackle box.. we just run it soo poorly..

2) Just another note on Boeckman.. the picks have to stop.. but i also think one of his biggest problems is that he vacates the pocket to quick.. there was one blitz that got picked up perfectly, yet Todd didnt trust his line, so instread he panicked and tucked the ball, and got sacked by Denlinger..

I was hoping to see a QB who was confident, poised, and could step up and deliver quality balls to his receivers...

I did see that.. sadly it was from Bauserman and not the #1 QB
