2008 tOSU Spring Game (4/19) & Practice Discussion

Yep I was in attendance, but actually sitting on my coach watching the Cavs, Reds, and Buckeyes...

Because I had bought a ticket, but the rain and lack of someone coming down from Cleveland because of the rain stopped me from going...

Just sucks because we have had great weather the past couple days...

COLUMBUS - All the bragging at Wednesday's Ohio State team draft held up, with the Scarlet squad backing up its talent edge on paper with a 20-7 victory Saturday in the Scarlet and Gray game as the Buckeyes finished football spring practice.
Here are final nuggets, thoughts and observations from spring and the spring game, with 133 days remaining until the start of the season and 147 until that trip to Southern Cal.

Just returned from the spring game. The rain reminded me of the Michigan last fall but missing one running back in Beanie. I think Boom did a nice job at that position and look forward to more of him in the game. TB threw two INTS but had a pretty good day with 12 out of 18 and about 150 yards. I saw Stoney catch a nice pass on a slant for about 30 yards. He's going to be good.

Henton and Bauserman were a little off but did connect with TWash on a long pass and then again later but it was called back. Dane caught a couple of passes and missed connecting on a couple more that were thrown to high and out of bounds.

Pettrey kicked a 48 yards FG - nice

At the end a fake punt almost turned into a completed pass by Brandon Saine to Nicol - thrown too high. I didn't know Zoom could throw the ball.

All-in-all it was a relief to see the Buckeyes on the field and get a glimpse of the future. The future looks bright even though my shades stayed in my pocket on this cloudy/rainy day.

I'll watch it a couple more times to be sure but my initial reaction was all positive except for the Hines injury and TB.

Boeckman did look a little better in the short passing game but the INT's, poor pocket presence, underthrows and happy feet were all still on display.

Its all been hashed and rehashed about TB, I was really hoping to see a big improvement, and may still, but I doubt it after today.

Ken Gordon breaks down the spring game

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Perched in the press box atop Ohio Stadium, Dispatch beat reporter Ken Gordon offers up some quick thoughts on the spring game:

What we learned

That Joe Bauserman is a real live quarterback and not just a novelty ex-pitcher. Terrelle Pryor might end up playing some this fall, but he will only be asked to master a special package of plays. In case something happens to Todd Boeckman, the Buckeyes will need a No.2 quarterback who can run the entire offense, and based on this day, Bauserman deserves the nod over Antonio Henton.

What we still don't know

Exactly what the offense will look like this fall. The formations and play calls were significantly different than what the team showed in the jersey scrimmage last weekend. Then, tailback Brandon Saine played a key role, with 15 carries or catches. Yesterday, he ran four times and had no catches. The hunch here is that yesterday was not a good indicator of things to come, but rather a day to look at guys who won't play much this fall.

After today's game, I can't wait to see atleast a 4 wide set with Robo, Hartline, Small & Washington

Washington and Small had a pretty good game. Dane made one long catch but it was just out of bounds. He was overthrown on two others by Henton and Bauserman. Maybe it was a timing thing or broken plays. I still think Sanz will break out this year.

Football: Chat Wrap with Former Buckeyes During Spring Game

Release: 04/19/2008

Tyler "Tank" Whaley, voted the 2007 team's most inspirational player, and Dimitrios Makridis, former Buckeyes long snapper, were available to answer fans' questions during the spring game. They also provided insight during the first half.

Despite rain, a total of 76,346 fans attended the spring game, topping last year's record crowd of 75,301. In the last three years, more than 210,000 fans have attended the annual spring game.

Read the full chat below and visit OhioStateBuckeyes.com for full postgame coverage.

Bill mason, ohio: Tank, as a former OL I loved watching you in the backfield last year. We were hoping you would carry the ball once or twice? Could you not talk coach Tressel into it?

Tank: To answer the question about carrying the ball more: I wish it was more. I wish it happened once. It is a dream for an OL. I definitely put out that idea but you have to do what is best for the team. I understand why Coach didn't. You have to do what is best for the team. It would hjave been though. I did get to catch a pass and returned a KO about 10 yards vs. Washington. That was a big thing for me and I definitely called my mom after that one.

cont'd...

Spring game on BigTenNetwork.com

Folks, the Spring game is on BigTenNetwork.com.......you can watch, get up and snag a beer, and scratch to your heart's content while on 'pause'. The defense seemed waaaay ahead of the offense, but would expect that, as they are primarily all veterans, but I tend to agree that Bauserman was 'showcased' to see what he could do. TB's play doesn't bother me much, as he was behind mixed O-lines, without Beanie, and , and, and.....but on the negative, the D wasn't blitzing, or if they were, were coming in slooooow, as he had the black jersey on. Thought it was intriguing that the q-backs all scrambled a bit more than I figured they would, maybe to show they can out terrell Terrell.

About an hour and forty-five minutes on the internet. Nothing really was shown, or unknown, several good plays, and wow, the D hasn't lose much from last year. Truly enjoyed teh play of the youngsters, and if one of the posters is right, they'll be on the pine soon. Too bad, but it looks like the Buckeyes have some talent to burn for the next several years.

I remain unconvinced by Boeckman. His receivers often look like they are waiting or coming back to the ball. The first interception was underthrown considerably to a wide open receiver.

Gotta' disagree with you. It was a well thrown ball but Kurt Coleman's closing speed was phenomenal and he made an acrobatic catch. Could it have been thrown a little better? Yeah, he probably could've lead Hartline more but considering the terrible conditions(which Boeckman himself admitted to struggling with) and how long that pass was(50 yards in the air), it was good enough. Also, Hartline wasn't wide open. He had a step but that was solid coverage.

Big improvement made inside
Defensive tackles hope to build on their solid, four-sack performance
Sunday, April 20, 2008 3:15 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State's defensive tackles had four sacks yesterday, nearly equaling their total for the entire 2007 season.
In other words, the Buckeyes' interior defensive linemen followed up a bad year with a good day in the spring game.
"That's a vast improvement from last year, and we've just got to build on that and have a great offseason," tackle Todd Denlinger said. "We really have unlimited potential inside."
All four players who shared the two inside spots in 2007 return: Denlinger, Nader Abdallah, Dexter Larimore and Doug Worthington.
