2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

actually soft and honestly, un-aggressive is/are the term(s) I'd use for this offensive line.

Instead of going out to attack the defenders, they just try to get in the way. If the defender is bull rushing or speed rushing, they will win more often than not unless the OSU lineman finds a way to delay the defender until the play has moved along.

I personally think it's the coaching philosophy, not necessarily the coaches themselves. I think the mindset has to change for one and they have to attack as a scheme.....

About a month ago JT took over the coaching for a few days and was yelling at the OL to "play faster". That is part of the issue. The other is toughness. Shugarts and Adams would have been starting by now.

We have to get a little lighter IMO. We also need to recruit athleticism. Adam Bellamy is a DL recruit who could help if we land Corey Adams.

this was the first game i got to see in person, so i was able to watch some things that you can't normally follow on TV. i kept an eye on boone a lot. he made one really good block that resulted in a big play by TP (i wish i could remember the specific play, but it was from our own 5 yard line or so in either the 1st or 3rd qtr), but that was about it. a lot of times he just looked lost. like mili said, why is he getting personal fouls? unacceptable...

It's amazing how much different our OL looks like now. Is there any other team in the country that plays our style of offense yet uses the same OL schemes? If you play power football, wouldn't you want your OL to blow the DL off the ball instead of get pushed backwards? Frustrating, very frustrating.

Sorry, but the O line was AWFUL (again) on Saturday. Beanie bailed them out and Terrelle bailed them out by being able to run and throw (even with N'Western defenders draped all over him).

If it takes a back like Beanie to make the O line function then Ohio State is in serious trouble next year and in future years.

Herbstriet and Spielman both were all over the line today on the radio.

Herby I take with a grain of salt because he's usually over the top. He used words like "pathetic" and "soft." He also ripped Boone a new one for the late hit. Along the lines of "that's as hard as he's hit anyone all year." I actually feel he was not out of line with these comments today.

Spielman I take more seriously and he had this to say: The line of scrimmage never moves with Ohio State's line. It either stays where it is or it moves backwards. That's the truth.

Whether it's the coaching or the players something needs to change and quick. Beanie is going to be gone soon and so is Ohio State's running game.

bingo. I have no idea but, how is next years line going to be better? All the young guys playing,,,,

Christ almighty. Look at the first two minutes of that You Tube clip and watch that line fire off the ball. They fire off and they engage and they move their man.

Now watch the first few series of the NORTHWESTERN game. They stand up and they catch their man and they just kind of try to get in their way.

Adams and Shugarts at the tackles. Brew at center. Boren at one of the guards. Maybe move Browning inside. That looks like a pretty goddamn good line to me. Just don't screw them up coaches!!!!!!!!!!!

I think you mean the play where the DE made an outside rush and Boone took him back to the goal line - it cleared out the left side for Pryor to scramble and then find Sanzenbacher by the sideline for a first down. It was about 2 plays before the head butt penalty, which was just before Pryor scrambled up the sideline and also drew the late hit.

I still don't understand why Coop couldn't beat TSUN and win bowl games. What an offensive line! I forgot how much fun it was to watch Eddie George.

Eleven Warriors

A nice little blog piece about frustrations of former Buckeye's. It's a little bothersome, even if it isn't true, that there is even a rumor of not using a blocking sled. That is one of the best tools for working on leg drive. And looking at that 95 video that is a major difference for me. I was at that game, and I can remember watching Eddie run wild. Eddie was amazing, but I don't know if he has the pure gifts that Beanie has, I'd love to see what he could do with a line that got that much push.
