Insinuating that there is no possible way that USC is better than Ohio State is logical?

He explained why he felt Ohio State was better and stated that those who ranked USC higher should do the same.

I haven't seen an in depth analysis of why USC should be ranked higher other than "It's USC".

I would think that the winner on 9/13 will move into the #1 spot. True, the #1 team usually doesn't move unless they lose, but #2 vs. #3 matchups speak volumes. UGA won't have a big win at that point, and the ASU game on 9/20 doesn't carry nearly the same weight. Either way, #1 isn't as important as it used to be. In the BCS, #2 is just as good, or better, if you look at the number of upsets in the title game. Look for the rankings to be shook up in the first third of the season. The top five are solid, but the rest is peppered with teams ranked 5-10 spots too high.

If I would think [meaning, rational cognition] in terms of our team?s goal, top 3 preseason rank and playing top 3 USC = control your own BSC NCG destiny. What more could a Control Freak who also controls the program?want or need from our Fairest of the Fair Friends of Flailingly Fornicating Football? Er, the pollsters? Let ?em Elvis to their hearts content [i.e. all shook up] ?and lemmings everywhere salivate to every bell in PavlovTown. This team is on a FUN mission from God. And if a fool gave JT the Key to the NCG Kingdom, who cares if a fool gave it to him, or the foolish means by which he did so? JT and Ohio State have been given?one of two Driver?s Seats. Call it?opportunity we control.

Pete, from what I have read, is just about the only journalist who builds a case with reasonable considerations; then presents his belief. FTR, I haven't wavered in my consideration even when he isn't positive about OSU.

In this particular instance, he lays out enough reasons as to why coaches should justify their voting. Is it somehow illogical considering the points that are raised in his statements?

I think coaches have better things to do then write articles justifying all of their picks. It is sad enough seeing coaches asked to explain their picks in December when things really matter. He wants them to do so in August?

OHIO STATE FOOTBALL
Bucks belong at No. 1

Sunday, August 03, 2008 Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter

Consider a college football team picked to finish third in its conference in 2007.
Forced to replace half its starters, including all of the skill players on offense (two of them first-round NFL draft picks), the team nevertheless gained more yards than it did the year before. The defense finished first in the country in both fewest yards allowed and fewest points allowed. In fact, the defense allowed six fewer touchdowns over the course of the season than the No. 2 defense.
This team exceeded expectations.

Chris Wells excluded, the offense sputtered towards the end of the season last year. I think this may still be in the mind of some of the coaches in this poll, and rightfully so. It's pretty much the same guys, and while experience is always nice, it doesn't always mean that a guy will have a better season than a year before. At least with our tough schedule this year, we'll know where we stand at the end of the regular season. The national media might try to downplay it, but some of them would rather us not even be in the Top 25.

I'm sure some are ranking us lower because of losing two straight NC games. But that says nothing about how good this team is going into this year. Especially when a lot of this team didn't play against Florida, and last year the whole team overachieved all season. The fact that the team got there at all last year, should be a reason to rank us HIGHER, not lower. I do think we have the best defense in the country. That could make the passing game less important, but I think the question marks there are what is really keeping us from a preseason #1.

It frequently does though. There are always exceptions to the rule but it's more than reasonable to expect significant improvement from a team that returns so much.

I also believe that there are questions about our offense and especially about our quarterback. We did not look good when defenses put Todd under pressure (e.g., second half against MSU). I'm hoping that we sorted that one out for this year!
