Buckeyes get top preseason honors from conference

Laurinaitis, Wells named Big Ten preseason players of the year on team picked to win conference.

COMMENT: Who do you think will win the Big Ten this year?

By Doug Harris
Staff Writer

Friday, July 25, 2008
CHICAGO ? Ohio State's Chris "Beanie" Wells was named the Big Ten preseason offensive player of the year, while teammate James Laurinaitis was picked as the preseason defensive player of the year. And if the league gave out a preseason freshman of the year award, the Buckeyes would have been a lock to win that one, too.
Quarterback Terrelle Pryor is perhaps the most anticipated recruit in school history, and coach Jim Tressel made no attempt to kill the buzz at the Big Ten kickoff event here Thursday, July 24.
Those eager for a glimpse of the western Pennsylvania legend apparently won't have to wait long.
"On Aug. 4, he gets to start practicing, and he's going to be incorporated into our offense that day," Tressel said.

OSU picked to win Big Ten ... again
Buckeyes, Laurinaitis, Wells selected best in preseason
By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
CHICAGO - Ohio State coach Jim Tressel addressed the national media here yesterday, wearing his familiar gray suit, and the familiar scarlet-colored necktie. And Tressel found himself sitting in a very familiar position and facing a lot of familiar questions. As the coaches and top players from the Big Ten Conference gathered at a downtown hotel for their annual preseason meetings, Tressel and his Buckeyes were chosen by the media as the favorites to win the Big Ten Conference - for what would be a fourth straight championship. So as he prepares for his eighth season directing the program at Ohio State, Tressel was quizzed about the pressure of being at the top, the stress of dealing with continual sky-high expectations, and the difficulty of being the team everyone wants to beat. "At Ohio State, with our history and our tradition, we've been living with the great expectations for a long time," Tressel said. "Amongst the Ohio State faithful, we're expected to win the conference every year. Our guys know that, and everyone who comes to Ohio State should know that." Wisconsin was picked second, with Illinois named third in the poll of the media covering the Big Ten. The conference only releases the top three teams in its poll.

Preseason poll jilts Michigan
Media rank OSU No. 1 in Big Ten; Wolverines not in top 3

"I believe everybody is looking up to Ohio State to play for back to back (to back) national championships; that's pretty obvious to me." ? Northwestern coach Pat Fitzgerald

CHICAGO -- The 2008 Big Ten preseason media poll came out yesterday, and the top three were, in order, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Illinois. What? No Michigan?
"That's probably a misprint," Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said.
No. But considering that Michigan has not been out of the top three since 1995, it was easy to understand Bielema's opinion at the conference's annual preseason kickoff.
Actually, a more realistic poll probably would have proclaimed Ohio State the Big One this season and the others the Little 10. The Buckeyes return 20 starters from the team that played -- and lost for the second straight time -- in the Bowl Championship Series national title game. They are gunning for an unprecedented third straight outright Big Ten title.

LSU at #6? Really? They lost their QB, #1 WR, #1 RB, a #2 NFL pick DT, #1 LB, both starting DBs, defensive coordinator...stop me anytime. Whatever QB they put on the field, he will have less than 3 pass attempts in college. I thought putting them in the high teens would be a stretch. Not only are they ranked ahead of Mizzou, Kansas, Clemson, and Wisky, but they got 3 first place votes! Are all the SEC coaches just ranking their conference's teams 1 thru 12?

UM at #24? Really? (see LSU) What, no ND?

Just goes to show how worthless preseason polls are. But I agree...LSU will lose a few this year no doubt. And scUM??? Well that's solely because Mike Barwis will turn them all into All-Americans.
