Bob Hunter commentary: USC's loss hurts OSU, but all is not lost

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

After Oregon State's stunning 27-21 upset of the No. 1 Southern California on Thursday night, the first note to hit my inbox began with a simple phrase that must have echoed in a few million households where Ohio State football is the language of the fall.

"How bad do we look now?"
As the Sports staff's resident amateur psychologist/comforter/hatchet man -- hey, you think this job is easy? -- I could try to soften the blow with a little on-any-given-day psychobabble, although in this case, blunt is probably best: The loss makes the Buckeyes look woefully average, considerably weaker than their No. 14 ranking. It makes them look like a mediocre team that would struggle to beat Ohio University and Troy at home.

A BCS opening for Ohio State?
USC loss creates opportunity, but Gophers just first of many tests

COLUMBUS When the Buckeyes woke up Friday morning, they found a changed college football landscape. And Ohio State might be wafting in a field of blooms.

Of course, the No. 14 Buckeyes (3-1) haven't proved nearly good enough to look past anyone on their schedule, including unranked Minnesota (4-0) in the Big Ten opener today at Ohio Stadium. The Golden Gophers have just seven wins over Ohio State in the last 47 meetings.

A win today could propel the Buckeyes into a run that puts them back toward the top of the polls. Although Ohio State, which has struggled in wins against Ohio and Troy and was dismantled by previous No. 1 Southern Cal, can't look ahead, we can.

Livingston: Possibilities for Pryor seem endless

by Bill Livingston Plain Dealer Columnist Saturday September 27, 2008, 5:58 PM

Columbus -- They call it "getting to the edge." It means getting to the flanks of a defense, where the sideline lurks. But a thin white line isn't really the boundary for a player like Terrelle Pryor. Possibility is.
In a 34-21 victory over Minnesota in the Buckeyes' Big Ten opener Saturday, the Buckeyes' freshman quarterback ran for 97 yards and two touchdowns. It was more than a first down (a 12.1-yard average) each of the eight times he carried the ball.
Limited as he is, a bird that is still learning to fly in the college passing game, Pryor can still make most defenses at this level worth no more than the blackboards their schemes are written on.
He threw only 13 times, completing eight, for only 70 yards and a touchdown. On the season, he has five touchdown passes and one interception.

I don't think that the coaches are going to change Terrelle's center at this point. He and Brewster have been working together so I don't think they'll mess with that. They haven't had any messy exchanges and from my untrained eye Brew has played very well.

Cordle has played also played well. I think the odd man out would be Person which should make practice very interesting this week. The ramped up competition you would hope would make for a dog fight for O line reps.

I'd say that if Rehring is getting inserted right back into the line up then the line will be Boone, Rehring, Brewster, Cordle, Browning.

Person is actually playing well.. i'd be interested in seeing Rehring at RT.. or back at LG.. Cordle has played better of late, but he's still not displaying the neccesary strength when engaging blockers.. He goes down to the ground too often from being overpowered by defensive linemen

Buckeyes adapt to new identity
Monday, September 29, 2008
By TODD PORTER
[email protected]

COLUMBUS When the season started, the Buckeyes knew where they were going. As the season has unfolded, Ohio State is feeling its way and re-creating its offensive identity.

Landing a sensational freshman quarterback who has proved he can start and lead the Buckeye offense will do that to a season. Whether OSU can adapt to a new offensive identity in time to salvage a national title run ? and if the rest of the country continues to cooperate ? remains to be seen.

Terrelle Pryor has taken over for Todd Boeckman at quarterback, and Ohio State went from a balanced offense capable of throwing down the field to a run-oriented offense where defenses have to pick their poison. Neither option ? Pryor nor tailback Beanie Wells ? is particularly appetizing.

"I'd say we're definitely a different team, offensively," said receiver Brian Hartline, who caught just one pass in Ohio State's win over Minnesota. "It's helped to add a spark. We're definitely a new offense. We can feel it on the field, and I'm sure the people in the stands and watching on TV can, too. It's a little bit different, but it's the same guys, so it should be successful.

"We went to a national championship game last year, and we have a whole new face, come 12 months later. That caught me off guard a little bit. Our goals remain the same and we're heading in the right direction."

Well, most of the same guys. And it doesn't appear any of them will be getting a break. The Buckeyes remained at No. 14 in the writers poll after a wild weekend that had four top 10 teams fall. USC only dropped from No. 1 to No. 9 despite losing to Oregon State. The Buckeyes fell out of the top 10 after losing to the Trojans.

Wells played for the first time since injurying his right foot against Youngstown State. Pryor threw just 13 passes, but the big freshman said that was by design against a 3-4 defense.

Ohio State's Daniel Herron (1) and fellow kick returner Brandon Saine have had trouble finding open room because of repeated missed blocks.

? Next game: Wisconsin Badgers (3-1, 0-1) ? Where: Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, Wis.
? When: 8 p.m. Saturday
? TV: ABC (Ch. 6), ESPN or ESPN2
? Radio: WBNS-AM (1460), WBNS-FM (97.1)
25 words or fewer

Southern California, Georgia, Florida and Wisconsin all slipped up. Ohio State returned to the fringes of the national picture but must win at Wisconsin.
In the polls

Despite the upsets above them, the No. 14 Buckeyes didn't move in the Associated Press media poll, even as Auburn -- coming off a lackluster win over now thrice-beaten Tennessee -- leaped over them, from 15th to 13th. The coaches elevated OSU one spot to 12th in the USA Today poll. Their top five is Oklahoma, Louisiana State, Missouri, Alabama and Texas, while the AP poll has it: Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU, Missouri and Texas. Penn State, in the wake of its dominant win over Illinois, is the only Big Ten team in the AP top 10, at No. 6. Wisconsin, after its shocking collapse at Michigan, dropped from ninth to 18th in the AP poll.
Who's hot

OSU freshman quarterback Terrelle Pryor. He has looked smooth, comfortable and in control. He exudes confidence, and his dearth of outlandish mistakes in the past three games has been remarkable.

Ohio State football: Buckeye perception

Marvin Fong/ The Plain DealerTerrelle Pryor has changed the way people see Ohio State.

First, I'll refer to a point I made after the USC loss: Can Ohio State get back to the national title game? No.
I'll stand by that, even after a crazy week of upsets. But here's a point I hadn't considered which probably must be considered, since I think it affects the mindset of the voters, at least the Harris Poll voters.
Ohio State isn't Ohio State anymore.

Injuries are part of the game. Beanie Wells' absence against USC doesn't give Ohio State a free pass to a loss. Same for the Trojans when it comes to the injuries USC dealt with against Oregon State.
But when voters look at the Buckeyes now, with Terrelle Pryor and Wells together in the backfield, they don't see the Buckeyes of the USC loss or of the last two national title games.
Pryor has brought an excitement to the entire aura around the Buckeyes that I think extends not only to the OSU fans, but everyone else around college football.

How high did Beanie really jump?

By Rusty Miller
the Associated Press

Wednesday, October 01, 2008
What's brewing today with the Ohio State Buckeyes:
Buckeyes buzz
Wide receiver Brian Robiskie was blocking downfield and had his back turned to the play when tailback "Beanie" Wells leaped over a potential tackler on a big gainer in OSU's win over Minnesota on Saturday, Sept. 27.
Robiskie knew Wells had carried the ball, but all he heard was a loud roar from the crowd ? as if someone had scored.
"So I'm wondering, why's everybody cheering, and he was like, 'You didn't see? I just hurdled this kid.' " Robiskie said Tuesday. "I said, 'What do you mean, you hurdled a kid? You don't do that.' He was like, 'No, no, no. You didn't see it? I was like 8 feet in the air!'"
Robiskie said he checked out the play later and there was no way Wells had that much clearance. He said Wells didn't even leap as high as 6-foot-8, 312-pound offensive tackle Alex Boone had while celebrating a touchdown last season by leapfrogging over WR Brian Hartline.
"If you go back and look at the film, (Boone) ... was a little bit higher than Beanie," Robiskie said.

Coaches' awards
Ohio State's coaching staff singled out the following players for their play in the 34-21 win over Minnesota: strong safety Anderson Russell on defense, Robiskie on offense and linebacker Etienne Sabino on special teams.
Also receiving mention were the scout-team award winners: QB Joe Bauserman on offense; DL Garrett Goebel on defense; and RB K.C. Christian on special teams. LB James Laurinaitis was picked as the top front-seven player on defense. No award was presented to the top offensive lineman.
Sabino also was selected for the Jack Tatum hit of the week.

Why doesn't that surprise me?
